2% milk?

My 12 month old spends Mondays with my mom. She currently gets whole milk at home, and at daycare. I was wondering what you all thought about the idea of letting her have 2% milk during that one day a week that she is with my mom. My parents drink 2% and she happily buys whole milk for her, but half of it gets thrown out because she can't drink it fast enough! I suppose I could send milk with her, but that's kind of a pita. I know babies are supposed to drink whole milk when they are this young, but it would only amount to at most, 8 oz of 2% a week. Thoughts??? TIA!

Yup! I agree, no problem! It's only one day a week.

I think it's fine too. Anna will get 2% if we're visiting family for the weekend, at a restaurant, or if we just run out of hers until we can get to the store to pick more up.

As long as she's a normal size, it's fine. If she was freakishly skinny, or something, I'd say no, but if she's normal, it's not a big deal. Katie had 2% from about 18 months on, with the doctor's approval. And she's now on 1%. In fact, I'm pretty sure I was raised on 1% or fat free, and I turned out fine (relatively ) so it's not as big a deal as it seems sometimes.

Trey gets 2% when we go out to eat and occasionally when we visit the grandparents (my mom always buys him a gallon of milk for just a WEEKEND and we end up bringing it home with us in a cooler ) I don't think its anything to worry about, unless your doctor said otherwise or voiced a concern about it

I think it's fine too. Jason has been drinking 2% milk since he was about 18 months old. He would only drink maybe 4 oz of whole milk in an entire day, but one day when we ran out of whole milk we gave him some of our 2% and he drank about 16 oz in about an hour. I figured he's getting much more out of that much 2% than he was out of the little bit of whole milk he was drinking before.

Definitely okay. In fact I give Sean 2% milk all the time even though he's only 17 months old. He's freakishly big though.

It's nice to read this and feel reassured that Colin's not the only one under 2 getting 2% on occasion. We buy and give him whole milk, but he's constantly drinking Aidan's 2% sippy cups.

That's what kept happening at our house too. The kids were always drinking out of each other's cups. Plus, DH and I drink nonfat milk, so for a while we were buying 3 kinds of milk and it was getting to be a pain.

Our pediatrician said that we could give Katie either 2% or whole milk (4%). I specifically asked him why I only read that toddlers should have whole milk he said, "well half the pediatricians say whole milk, the other half say 2%. If the child is really small, I'd probably suggest whole milk."

Our ped. said the same - definitely ok for her to have 2%!

This is us right now Only John and I drink different milks (he drinks 2% and I drink skim) and Gab is still on whole. Although I do plan to ask the ped at her next visit about 2% for her.
