First Cold

DH and I have both been sick with a cold recently and now I think Dylan has it. He has been coughing , sneezing and has a slight runny nose (clear). He's not miserable at all and I don't think it's bad enough to call his ped. Is there a cold medicine for infants? He is 5 1/2 months old. Thanks!

I don't think cold medicines do much for babies.

The best thing to do to clear up baby noses is get some saline drops and use them. Then get that snot sucker thing and go to town.

You can try bringing him into the bathroom and run a hot shower so the steam will help clear him too.

At night you can try elevating on end of the crib mattress to make breathing easier.

Yep - all of that AND if he doesnt have sensitive skin, you can bathe him in the baby vapo- bath stuff. We even used some vapo type cream from J&J and rubbed it on their chests to help them if they were really congested.

Genavieve is starting to get over her first cold. We did take her to the pediatrician. They gave us PediaCare infant cold drops and the saline solution. The pediatrician said to only give her the cold medicine at night and to do the saline drops during the day when we notice her nose running. She is still coughing some but her nose is so much better!

When zack got his first cold and cough at about 4 months old, the ped told us to use pediacare and then call them for the does. I think ours was the same as for tylenol (at that time 0.8 ml) Just check the lables well and only get what he needs. LIke a decongestant, decongestant plus cough, etc. They sell them individually and also multi symptom. When he got it bad again, the ped gave him a prescription multisymptom. It was a decongestant, cough med and antihistimine (so it helped him sleep, too!) and it worked great!
