Baby to the Beach??

My baby is 7.5 months old now and I was thinking of taking her to the beach for a few hours this weekend. I think she could actually have fun now and enjoy the new things. But I'm worried about her getting sunburned. I have baby sunscreen... but how well does it really work? She does have a hat she wears outside, so that will help.

Is there a limit or something that you should have a baby out in the sun for?

I thought about getting one of the cabana tents but I can't find them here and at her age she isn't going to stay in there by herself.

Have any of you taken your babies to the beach while they were still young? How did it go? Anything to reccomend? Or do you think it isn't safe at all to take baby to the beach at this age?

I've done it in the past with my daughter starting at 6 months old. I made sure to keep her slathered up with sunscreen and a giant floppy hat. The sunscreen worked excellent, and I was a nut to reapply after I had her in the water (1st child syndrome )

She really enjoyed the beach and I did get one of those cabana tents from that online web site.... I think it was The Right Start. She did take a few naps in it, but once she was up, she thought it was for play and loved to peek out the back screen. (want to buy mine? )

We also had a big umbrella over the cabana and covering a blanket in front.

I'd say it'd be fine for a few hours, but I'd never have her out there for a full day.

What about getting a big beach umbrella for Abby? I bought one at Target for $14.99 and Katie plays under it in the front yard--it works really well.

Oh, and I burn through just about all sunscreen...regardless of SPF...but the other day I put Katie's WaterBabies sunscreen on my face before I worked in the yard--and I didn't burn/tan or anything! I was very pleased! Granted, this wasn't with the sun reflecting off the water or anything...but still.

We took Anna to the beach last summer when she was about 6 months old. We bought her one of the UV bathing suits that has spf protection and covers the arms and legs. In addition to that, we kept her covered wtih sunscreen, and of course, a hat. It's also good to go avoid going during the middle of the day (say 10-3) when the sun's rays are the strongest.

Have fun!

I never took Cameron to the beach, but I would take him out on my parents boat. He always would wear a hat and sunglasses. Also, I would put sunblock on him every two hours. He never burned.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

Sarah I bought a little beach umbrella at Target this morning that will be just her size. She has her bathing suit, a big floppy hat and sunscreen. She should be good!

Good luck, Tori!!

I was just going to add that we didnt take Aid to the beach, but like Kate, we always took him out on my parents boat. We kept him under the shaded part except for when he was swimming and we slathered him in sunscreen and always kept a floppy hat on him..even when he was in the lake. Not once did he ever burn! And we'd spend hours out on the boat.

We took Trey to the lake a few times last summer, and kept sunscreen on him, as well as bug repellant and a floppy hat..also had his feet covered with aqua shoes....
