I think that I may have made a mistake! (Crib Sleeping)

Connor is 14 weeks old now and when we brought him home from the hospital, he slept in a bassinet in our room. When he outgrew that, we put the pack n play in our room and he slept in that. I would like to try to switch him to his crib in his own room but I can't get him to sleep in it for more than 15 minutes without waking up. I think that I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it. After I change his diaper I lay him in his crib and turn on his mobile while I wash my hands and stuff and sometimes I lay him in there when I want to throw a load of laundry in or something like that. I think that he sees his crib now as a place to play, not a place to sleep. I can't think of any other reason why he would not sleep in there. Can anyone help me?

I would try putting the crib in your room for starters, and each night slowely move it out... I know it sounds really odd/strange but I have heard from many moms that have done this before.

Well, keep in mind that Katie isn't a good napper...so you might want to take my advice with a grain of salt!

Anyhow, what about starting with the crib just at nighttime so he's more tired when he goes into it??

It is unlikely that Connor has associated his crib with playing. He is simply doing what most babies who are 14 weeks old do....and that is wake up 10 minutes after putting them down. Will Connor sleep in the PNP in your room? Is there a pressing reason to get him to sleep in his crib in his room? If not, I'd say leave him to sleep in your room in the PNP and worry about moving him to his crib when it is time to teach him how to sleep on his own. Babies are not ready to learn how to sleep on their own until they are 4-1/2 to 5 months old so in the meantime, I'd say let him be.

Good luck!

Well, there is no way that I can put the crib in our room. It is huge and we have no room. On a positive note, I did get him to sleep in the crib yesterday for a nap and it lasted 45 minutes. He is in it again right now taking a nap so I guess that I just need to be persistant. As far as why I want him in his crib, I just kind of want my room back. I am not all that comfortable with Connor in the room with us and I am afraid that he will never sleep in his crib if I don't start early enough and I don't want a child who sleeps in my room. That is just my opinion. I do want to wait until he is 4 month to put him in there at night because he sometimes wakes up at night for a feeding.

I'm a bit confused... you're wanting him to nap in his crib for now and then having him sleep there at night also in a few weeks? I wonder if putting the pnp in his room for a while would let him get used to the room in a familiar space. Then you can try transitioning him to the crib once he's used to the room.

I had Josiah in a co-sleeper at night until he was 6 months. At first I'd put him in the crib while awake when I was folding his clothes, doing something in his room. Then I started putting him in his crib - awake - while I showered. He played and looked at his mobile. Eventually i started putting him in there for naps. All the while he slept in the co-sleeper at night. When we eventually put him in the crib at night at 6 months it was pretty easy.

I think Sarah's idea of putting the PNP in his room at first sounds like a good idea!~

I started putting DD's PNP in her room before she moved into her crib. The transition went really well for us.

My kids don't necessarily nap well in their crib but they sleep most of the night anyway. Naps vary so much anyway, sometimes they'll sleep for hours, other times it's 20 minutes. It doesn't matter where I put them. I moved Logan and Madelyn to their crib, in their room, at 3 months and they did just fine. But like I said, naps are hit or miss.

Have you tried putting him in the crib at bedtime or just for naps?

I have not tried night time just yet because he still is getting up most nights to eat so I am just lazy and would rather he be near me so that I don't have to walk into the other room.

What you said makes sense though, napping is not real scheduled so I cannot expect him to sleep in there for a long peroid of time during the day,.

Just another thought....once I put them in their crib in their own room they started to sleep a much longer stretch at night. Maybe it's not my movement/sounds disturbing them, maybe I didn't wake up as easily to their every noise...I don't know, but they did!

Last night I put him in his crib for the frist time and it worked really well. He still woke up at threee but that is because he had not eaten since 8:30 and he usually eats a little bit before I go to bed around 10:00-10:30. Bit he slepts really soundly and did not wake as much as he did in the PNP so I am happy!
