Vitamins

Do you give your toddler vitamins? Did your pediatrician recommend them or did you just decide to give them for good measure? What kind do you give (brand, gummy vs. chewable, etc.)? When did you start giving them?

I meant to ask Jackson's pedi yesterday about giving him vitamins, but I forgot. (I swear, someday I'll remember to just bring in an actual list of questions... ) Anyway, I'm thinking that vitamins might be a good idea and they certainly couldn't hurt, right? I'm just not sure what brand or what type is best. Jackson's 18 months, by the way.

The ped. office usually asks me at the checkups if Genevieve is getting a multi-vitamin. She loves the gummy vites. But, she hates everything else. The other chewable ones we spent most of our time grinding up and hiding in oatmeal. She'll eat the gummy vites like they were candy.

I mentioned this in your journal, but we give Micayla the gummy vitamins. I just started giving them to her on my own. She was real picky about what she ate for a while and I worried she wasn't getting enough nutrients. We got the gummy vitamins that they carry at Costco (you have a membership, don't you?) She loves them and actually ask for them at times.

Caroline gets Flintstone Chewable Vitamins (broken in half for 2-3 year olds, as instructions say!) I happened to ask the pediatrician about her veggie strikes at various times - she said that vitamins certainly wouldn't hurt, but shouldn't be relied on to replace things they aren't getting in fruits/veggies.

We give Joe the Poly-vi-sol liquid. Our ped said he probably doesn't need it, but it can't hurt.

A few weeks ago, we started using vitamin drops. This coincided with switching Kiaeryn's evening bottle of formula to a sippie of milk. Given her history of picky eating, we want to ensure she's still getting the nutrients she needs now that the formula's nearly phased out. Will discuss with the pedi at this weeks appointment. Right now we're using drops without iron and I want to ask about that.

We give Jason the gummy vitamins. He thinks they're fruit snacks and will ask for more.

Brandi will become famous soon enough
We have some for Carter and he loves them, like candy. But, we don't give them to him much because his doctor says he doesn't really need them.

Thanks, everyone. I ended up getting him some Flintstone chewables because he doesn't really seem interested in gummy fruit snacks (yes, my kid is weird - he doesn't like cheese either! ). I'm breaking them in half and he seems to do ok with them.

Thanks again!

Get the ones that say "My First Flintstones". They are for toddlers and you don't have to break them in half

Our ped said the same thing, but Alex gets a dropper daily. He also has a chewable because his big sister gets one!

I've resorted to using the poly-vi-sol in a 4oz glass of applejuice. I tried chewables and it was a no-go (even crushing them up and mixing them in something) and the gummies didnt go over well, either (i even hid one in a bowl of fruit snacks and he picked it out and said "no, mommy. no"

Hmmm...my Ped said he doesn't believe in Vitamins and recommended that I not give them to Gwen ...He said if I insisted he would write the scrip but that she should be getting what she needs from her food. He has been a great Dr and I trust him but I have to admit I want to give her vitamins. I think I might just get the Flintstones on my own.

This is what we gave both Tylor and Alyssa for a long time..Alyssa just started taking the toddler flinstones "my First Flinstones" and she likes them so I figure we are good to go. She loves veggies and fruit but I too believe that it is important for them to get vitamins. Tylor also still takes a flinstone daily..He doesn't eat so he is more of a concern then she is actually.

We use this too with both of our boys (Jared was anemic and our doctor told us to give it to him, so I decided to give it to my other son at the same time). Neither of them seem to mind the taste, so I just drop it in their mouths.

BEWARE though....this stuff STAINS. I accidentally dropped 1/2 a bottle's worth and it does NOT come out of carpet. We used spray on carpet cleaner (immediately after I dropped it), had our carpets professionally cleaned, nada. Now we've got a big, nasty brown spot on the rug.

We don't use any vitamins or minerals but we *try* to make Patrick's diet as balanced as possible. We avoid sugary stuff etc. and he seems to be OK woith fruit and vege;s so far (knock on wood).
