Young toddler arts & crafts

I was wondering if any of you have done A&C with the 2ish set (or have had DCPs who have). It seems like all the crafty things I see around are for older toddlers...

Matthew has done a few things in that LINK program... they made playdough, they are going to make ice cream (something about squishing it in a baggy, but that's all I know), they made these bottle with glitter, etc. in water, they fingerpaint, etc.

Rebekah does crafts alot at Daycare. Most of it involves gluing pieces of construction paper to make shapes. Every month they each make something and put it on the door. This month it's flowers. Last month butterflies, march was shamrocks. Yesterday they all made Mother's Day cards.

Rebekah loves glue. At our Easter breakfast, she learned how to crumble pieces of colored tissue paper into little balls, dip it in a bowl of glue, and glue it to a paper. She also loves glue sticks. My mom takes her to story hour at the library and they do a craft there. This week it was making a pig face. Well, Rebekah only wanted to play with the glue stick

Crayola makes washable finger paints. I bought them but I haven't pulled them out yet. I'm waiting for a rainy day.

You could also maybe try stringing beads on string to make bracelets or necklaces.

Eleanor is an unknown quantity
Yeah- we glue things, and color (washable crayons, crayola color wonder markers, at first- she's better about not drawing on furniture these days, so she occasionally gets a pen, or a real marker), and do paint with water (hard to find). I haven't been brave enough for fingerpainting, or real water colors yet, but she's done both when she's in daycare. (and they have a new color wonder finger paint set that I haven't tried yet)

Pain in the butt. Rebekah can't seem to get that she's supposed to rub her finger in the little tray, not scoop the stuff out of the little tray and spear it all over the page.

So I'd say they are definitely for older kids.

I have the Toddler's Busy Book but I haven't really looked at it yet. I bought it when Rebekah was still young. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

Joe does all kinds of stuff at daycare - coloring, glueing stuff, etc. They have these paints that are like bingo markers that the kids really like.

Matthew does all sorts of things at daycare as well ( in the 1 year old room). They involve finger-painting, stamper painting, gluing things onto paper that has either been cut into shapes or that has a shape already (page out of a coloring book). Things that they have glued include cotton balls, hay, yarn, and tissue paper. For example, the teacher will have a picture from a coloring book of a rainbow, and the kids glue colored yarn onto it. They have also made bouqets of flowers out of the cardboard egg containers (teacher cuts apart each individual egg holder--child paints it--teacher puts a pipe cleaner through the bottom). They have also done windsocks. At home we have painted rocks. They have also made and decorated various things to shake. I think there is more, but those are some of them I can remember.

I have the book "Young at Art". I love this book!!! She addresses approaching art from a really young age (under 1) and gives great ideas on how to introduce separate media. I thought it was really interesting. Here's a link to it on amazon:

We have Color Wonder fingerpaints (and markers) and Aidan loves the fingerpaints and understands the concept just fine.

Anyway...I do lots of little art projects with him. They are still simple, but he LOVES it. We do fingerpainting, water colors, poster paints (he loves using brushes, but we've also painted with string & matchbox cars!!!), & markers. He loves to use the glue stick and glue stuff...I usually just cut out shapes and stuff for him, but we'll also use yarn, cotton balls, fabric scraps, popscicle sticks, etc. He also loves making sticker creations. Recently, they started using scissors at daycare, so he's really into cutting (or attempting to cut ). Of course, he adores playdoh.
I like art projects because I can start him off and then I can feed a baby and it totally occupies his time while I am feeding...he really gets into creating stuff!!
