Carrying a Tune

Can your toddler carry a tune?

Maggie sounds pretty tone deaf when she sings, and I'm just wondering if its a developmental thing or if she's just inherited her singing skills from me.

I think it's from you

Matthew's not horrible, but definitely not always in tune.

Rebekah's not in tune either. Heck, she doesn't even say all the words yet!
I think it's a little early for carrying a tune.

We're always joking that Lexie got her singing skills from Jim. No tunes being carried here either!

Isabelle actually does quite well (I say she gets it from her dad, who's quite musical) but still can't REALLY carry a tune, the way an older child could (if you ever listen to a group of young children singing- preschool early school age- it seems that's a skill that develops rather late! )

Tonedeaf like a post here too - like Eleanor said, I think it's one of those things that comes with ADVANCED age.

Jason's pretty good at carrying a tune. He doesn't say all the words yet, but he's pretty good at copying the actual notes. My mom has perfect pitch, so we're thinking it might have skipped me and gone straight to him.

Carter has just really started "singing", but it's more like talking. He usually only sings on one pitch. Although, he has been able to match pitch for quite a while now. But that only happens once in a while. You can tell he's working on it though, he might start out on a wrong note and then he changes it to match mine. It's pretty cool - he just doesn't do it while he is singing a song.

Lyndee has a spectacular aura about
Lauryn is singing a lot and she sings in tune too (well most of the time anyway!) She is also good at remembering words to songs. I've been trying to get her to sing "You are my sunshine" and it didn't seem like she was into it at all and then one day she just sang the whole song with correct words and in tune! (don't know where she would get the singing from since neither DH nor I sing and I also tend to butcher words to songs )

Alyssa and Tylor both have always done really well at sining in tune. I know when I had Tylor I was shocked at how well he did. Now with Alyssa I just expect it I guess. I am a vocal Music education Major (graduating soon!) I have been singing since before I could walk acording to my parents. I really thinking singing can be learned but a lot of it depends on their geans

Ty likes to sing, though he doesn't know the words to the songs usually. It's pretty funny actually. But, I can hear him trying to hit the notes! I love to sing so I hope he has inherited this trait from me.

OK...it must be because they were born on the same day! This is Alexia too!

Alexia sings pretty darn good for her age and in tune! We joke & say she's going to be the next Toddler American Idol! As a matter of fact, we plan on getting her a real microphone soon as she's always singing all the time and in tune. She knows all the words to all her favorite songs (Pat-a-cake, Old McDonald, Pease Porridge Hot, Row your Boat, Sunshine, ABC song, and so much more!) I really don't know where she gets it from....I can't sing for crap although I try. I think maybe it comes from me always singing.....now & even when she was in utero.

Just a suggestion on singing, a child will be able to sing more in tune if you get them to use their "head voice" instead of their "chest voice." When I sing to Katie I try to use my head voice as much as possible. If you're not sure where your head voice is, sing a really low note and gradually get higher and higher. Eventually you'll feel a flip in your throat and may have problems singing certain notes. Once the flip happens that's your head voice.

DD is 2 and a half now and she's always loved to sing. But lately her ability to sing a specific tune has definitely improved. In fact, often she'll sing a certain tune and make up different words, but I know what tune she's singing to!
