Separation anxiety - when does it get better?

Julian is 21 months old. Separation anxiety didn't really kick in until he was about 15-16 months old, but now there are days (more often than not) that he just HOWLS when I leave him, be it at daycare or at home with his dad. I know he's fine within moments of me leaving, but it hurts my heart to hear him screaming and crying like that. When should this start to ease up? Is there anything I can do to help the process along and to reassure him?

I have no advice for you as we're going through the same thing, and Jack is 2 1/2! I can't even leave the room for a second without him throwing a major fit! His daycare teacher says this is totally normal behavior though and we just have to ride it out.
