Indivually wrapped snacks
Asking for a friend with a 1st grader:
What do you send to school when you need to send indivually wrapped snacks? Since of course you want both something somewhat healthy and also not too expensive? And where do you normally get them: Grocery store, Sams / Costco? |

I buy Pirate Booty or Cheddar Bunny snack bags from Amazon. (I have Prime, so shipping is free)

Do they have to be pre-wrapped? Or can the parent individually wrap them?

We take small boxes of raisins or Welch's fruit snacks.

Oh that's a good question, Karri!
I took banana bread our first snack day and cut it into the amount of pieces needed and individually wrapped them in saran wrap. |

Our teachers don't do it anymore, but they used to. And I would always individually wrap them myself, unless I'd buy things like the Stonyfield Farms gogurt type things or mini bags of baby carrots (costco sold them in a lot of 24, I think). I usually picked a fruit that was on sale - grapes, blueberries. Once we did string cheese.

Regarding "individually wrapped from the store", that's what I asked her, since of course there are lots of things you can buy that would be in a large bag from the store and would need to be portioned out by the parents or teacher. They strongly say they want individually wrapped but that jacks the price up so much. Last time she did home bake cookies and they didn't say anything bad to her.
Occasionally I buy those boxes of individually packaged stuff but it's so much more expensive than the big packs of course. Like at our grocery, the one-serve packs of apple slices are $1 (this is an expensive store anyway) per pack. I've never priced it at Costco or Walmart. Thanks for the replies. (And sorry for misspelling individually twice earlier - I knew it didn't look right) Last edited by marcy : November 4th, 2009 at 01:32 PM. |

I guess I'd pass out whole apples. Pre-sliced apples taste gross...whatever they do to keep them from getting brown makes them funky tasting. But that's me.
Anyway.... does she have to avoid nuts? That limits it. But I guess I'd buy on Amazon or Costco in bulk....teddy grahams, pretzels, yogurt, baby carrots, that sort of thing.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Letting her know.
This class doesn't have to avoid nuts so that makes it easier. |

i'm curious....do you all have to take turns bringing snacks for your children's class? or just on party days?

We've had to bring snacks for all my kids while in preschool. Most have rotated through the class list so each kid brings a snack once or twice per month. Last year B's teacher had each kid bring snacks for a week at a time- I did not like that system! It's hard to come up with 5 different snacks in a row.
About the only prepackaged, individually wrapped snacks I sent were cheese sticks. I usually sent fruit-- little apples, clementines, grapes, or strawberries. And popcorn or pretzels, individually bagged by me.
