She Won't Eat

I know toddlers are really picky eaters but I swear Emma has lost weight. She can go down a size of diapers (or the diaper has changed).

I offer her 3 meals a day plus 3 snacks and she won't eat it.

We try chicken, turkey etc

Any ideas? Should I just not worry? Do you think she needs a weight check? What good would that do anyway I guess.

She is 21 months old.

Thanks.

We haven't started dairy with her (allergy) and she doesnt eat red meats.

This describes Ethan too. He fits into clothes he had outgrown, feels lighter and it seems like he doesn't eat much. There are some things I know he'll eat, so I try to offer what I know he likes, things like pasta, bread, chicken and steak (he'll only eat meat as long as I don't put it on his plate ) oh and junk food, but I try to limit that. I'm not too worried as he's 30lbs (he was probably 33-34 at one point) plus he nurses a lot so that's good for him.

If you're worried, you should get her checked, but I think it's normal. Just keep offering her different things and she'll eat when she needs to. I'm sure someone will have better advice than me (hopefilly, lol!)

I swear Madelynn never eats too. I think she throws a lot more food than she eats.

Maybe she's growing taller and thinner and that's why her diapers are lose?

I guess I'd take her to the dr for a weight check if you think she needs it.

Kate is an unknown quantity
Cameron is 26 months old. Somedays he barely eats anything. My peditrician told me that he should be eating about one good meal a day. Somedays he may have nothing and other days he could he two - three meals. I would watch for a trend.

If you feel that she has lost weight, not just grown taller and thinned out, then I would call and have her checked out.

Carter is 15 months old and eats next to nothing. Here's the list of foods he'll eat:

Applesauce, banana, raisins, waffles, yogurt. That is it and has been for about a month. I keep offerring other foods but he won't even try them. Some days he won't even eat those foods above. My doc says not to worry but I know, it's so hard!

Julian normally eats everything that's not tied down, but occasionally he'll go through spells where nothing interests him, not even things he normally loves. I don't worry about it if he does that for a day or two or three - I reckon he knows where to find food, and he'll eat when he gets hungry! He's been able to wear some things that had gotten a little tight as he's gotten taller, and now, where we were once worried that he'd outgrow the size 6 diapers before he was anywhere near ready to potty train, they fit comfortably because he's gotten taller and slimmed down as he's become more mobile. All this to say, clothes getting bigger could be for reasons other than Emma being a picky eater or losing weight, and she'll eat when she's hungry.

Has your doc ever expressed concern about Emma's weight being too low? If not, this probably isn't anything to be worried about. But if it would ease your mind, ask your doctor about it - sometimes that peace of mind is well worth a phone call or a co-pay for an office visit.

If that's the case, you might want to talk to your doc. Maybe he'd have suggestions for other ways she could get nutrition, like Pediasure or some other nutritional drink?

And if this helps, my brother weighed the same at three annual checkups running when he was young. His doctor told my mother she had to get him to eat, and she said, how can I do that, he's so busy he just can't be bothered to slow down long enough for food! He ate enough to make it out of childhood and grew up to be a strapping 6'2" and 250 pounds, so he came out of that not-eating phase just fine.

Madelynn was 22 lbs from 9 months until almost 2 and her dr. never seemed too concerned about it.

I weighed her at home and she weighs the same as she did when she was a year :eek;

Oh well I guess she is a slow gainer now. But she didn't lose any weight. It may just be a toddler thing.

Jillian will become famous soon enough
Janelle goes through weeks of not eating...and then weeks where she wants to eat a ton, I think it's a toddler thing... She also has weight issues...but that's been there since the begining...she did however just drop down a diaper size as well...she had been wearing 3's for a month and all of a sudden she got taller (like whent from the 0th percentile in height to the 25th in the course of 2 months) and she is now in 2's again.
