hitting

My son has been hitting other kids for a while now. He usually does it with an open palm and it is on the top of the head. Not real hard; more like a bop on the head. Sometimes he uses both hands and tries to play a kid's head like a drum. I don't think he's trying to hurt anyone, but it's really horrible. I don't always think that it hurts the other kid, but I don't know what to do about it. He did it to a 9 month old the other day and I felt so bad. Then just the other day, he was playing with a good friend and all of a sudden he hit him on the head with a car. He only does this with smaller kids - never kids his age or older.

I really talked to him sternly about it and always try to point out the other kid's feelings and how they are crying and what they feels like!

Other's out there? What have you done?

Dylan is the same way. He is always hitting now. We try to remove him from the general area and look him right in the face and tell him sternly "NO HITTING!" This usually results in us getting a slap. We always make sure he goes over and apologizes to whomever he hit. If he does it more than once he gets a time out.
My new phrase is instead of "this too shall pass" is "this TWO shall pass."

Cameron is the exact same way. He has been hitting us, his grandparents, and any other children. I have been trying to take him away from the people that he is hitting and I have been giving him timeouts.

I guess it's good to know that others are doing it too?! Carter only does it with kids younger than him. I thought it might be because we occasionally slap the dog (we are not doing that anymore, needless to say), but I'm not sure if that's it or not. I told my friend that and she's like "Oh - now I know where your son gets his bullying habits from." She didn't say it in those words, but you could tell that's what she meant. She has a 9month old that Carter hit the last time we were there and it made him cry. I felt really bad, but I can't wait until her son goes through that kind of thing. Then she'll realize that it's not just MY HORRIBLE SON that has a PROBLEM! I know I was in her position when Carter was younger and played with older "bullies". I thought, "my son will never be like THAT!" Oh, how quickly we learn!

Caden went throught this as well. He was hitting anyone that made him mad. We just did the time-outs and kept reenforcing "NO HITTING' with him and he finally got the picture. now he has moved onto hitting doors or walls when he is mad. The joys of toddlerhood

Yesterday at the mall, Carter was doing his "hitting" again. I say it that way because most of the time, it is more of a swat. Well, he was "swatting" a girl who was probably about 10 years old. I ran over and did the whole "we don't hit" thing and removed him from the scene to talk to him some more. We then went over and he apologized to her. She was like "whatever - he's a baby!" Anyway, after that, I saw him swatting at her once, but she was laughing and then they were best friends and he followed her all over the place. It was really cute. Then when she was leaving, he tried to follow her. He was sad that she was leaving. It was just so cute! OH - BTW, we were playing in the soft play area at the mall.
