First birthday music theme: HELP

(Am I missing a party thread on here?!)

Colin's (very belated) first birthday party is on Sunday, and I was planning a circus theme...though light on the "clown" theme - mainly circus animals. But I am struggling with cake ideas and can't find many decorations......

So.......I am now thinking of a music theme. Based around this cake:

I figure I can do some basic decorations, put a lot of our music toys out, buy some inflatable guitars and microphones...and of course we'll play music.

I then figure I can buy some little musical things for the goody bags. Kazoos and such.

We are also going to do a small sheet cake with some musical notes or other musical instruments - like a drum.

But I am looking for some other creative ideas, including a "slogan" for the sheet cake. Or anything brilliant for the decorations or goody bags. And if anyone can think of something fun for Colin to wear, that's even better!

TIA!!

Why don't you make a round layer cake and decorate it like a drum? You can you licorice strings for the string around the side, and a proper piece of licorice on the side for a drumstick. And just have two different colours of icing for the top and then the sides. I'm not a theme person, so I'm not too good at this. How about Strike up the band, Colin is ONE! or something. Here is a link to a birthday party site.

Geez... I'm terrible at these things!

Bev has some good ideas and I LOVE that website! (I saved it :supergrin )

Do you have some of those little plastic tambourines?

I'm sorry I'm not much help.

Wow..I think you have thought of a great theam for a birthday party. I am not sure on anything else for decorations as you have some great idea's already..

Games:
Musical chairs
Hot potato
Fon Dancing

Another thing that 1 and 2 year olds can do is:
Turn music on. Give them each a pair of sticks, a tamboreen, a drum, anything. Turn the music on and have them sit in a circle on the floor. Let them make up music to the music (a rhythm section) While they are doing this..TAPE THEM! Then play it back. Children are totally in love by their own music at this age.

You can probably go to a local preschool/kindergarden and get musical instruments ..most are willing to rent them or give them out.

P.S. I love the idea of the cake..and Bev's cale as well. Really cool!

Thanks for the thoughts...but...we switched the theme again. We're doing something more simple: an ice cream theme. Cake in the shape of an ice cream cone, a make your own sundae bar, and personalized ice cream scoops and bowls for the kids who are coming to take home as favors.

Besides, if you saw how excited Colin gets when eating ice cream....well, it just makes sense!
