Throwing things?

How, oh how, do we break the throwing habit? Julian can't seem to have anything in his hands for any length of time without throwing it - sippy cup, crayons, books, you name it. We've tried leaving whatever he's thrown where it landed and not giving it back. With food, we've tried giving him two warnings and then taking him out of his chair and taking the plate away after the third time he's thrown the food. That just results in lots of screaming, and the lesson doesn't seem to be sinking in - the throwing continues. I'm at a loss, and I'm about worn out from trying to keep things picked up off the floor when we go out to a restaurant and from trying to keep my floors at home relatively passable. Help?!

Matthew used to do it worse than he does now, but he still does it occasionally. I don't know any way to stop it, but I think it's just a stage.

Our big issue was throwing the sippy cup. One day I sat down on the floor with her and a sippy cup. She motioned for it, so I handed it to her nicely and said "see, we give things GENTLY". Then I asked for it, and she tossed it. So I said no, we give things NICELY to each other. A few more rounds, and she finally got the idea. Maybe you can modify it for your situation?

OK, if it's just a phase, I guess I can just suck it up and muddle through. Anne, thanks for the suggestion - I'll try something along those lines with Julian, although he doesn't do anything gently. He's full-tilt rough-and-tumble boy all the time, and I don't think "gentle" is in his nature!

Hmn....we've been very lucky with Lexie I guess. Whenever she has thrown anything besides a ball, I tell her that we don't throw that, etc. and that balls are made for throwing. I will sometimes redirect her by getting a little ball and having her throw that instead. If she throws the toy or whatever a 2nd time I tell her again...and by the 3rd time she knows that it will be taken from her.

We've only had to do this a couple of times...luckily she never continued it after I've handled it those times. Today actually I caught her throwing her bunny ears....I looked at her in the eyes and I told her that Lexie you know we don't throw that...it's not a ball... and she stopped and never did it again. Gentle is her nature!

It most definately is a phase but for Lexie I still wanted to make sure there would be a consequence for her action (taking the toy away). I didn't want her to act up at family's houses throwing things or where ever else or her thinking that it is an ok thing to do....

I've tried this type of thing with Liam and he just laughs at me.

Just wanted to let you know that I'm in the thick of it with you. Nothing is gentle about my son either. I know it's a phase and we should 'enjoy' every minute of it........

WOW!!! I can only IMAGINE this!!! Ellen would CRACK UP!!! I've tried similar things (luckily, one thing Ellen DOESN'T do is throw things, well, very rarely... dropping things, yes... throwing things, not much) with other issues, and she just looks at me and laughs. Gentle and Ellen... two words I would NEVER put together... My little tomboy

I agree, though... total phase.

Rebecca - That's too funny! And to think, Lexie has NEVER not once laughed at me yet on any issue. I'm thinking that's yet ANOTHER phase that she just hasn't done yet...laughing at me when I tell her "no", etc.
