Glucophage and Clomid
Has anyone taken glucophage with clomid? That is the next step my doctor is taking. When I got pregnant with Lauren we used clomid twice and conceived. This time we took it for six months, going up to 150mg and I never even ovulated. I got pregnant on my own which was a miracle. I ovulate on my own maybe twice a year. Just interested to see if anyone else has tried this and what the side effects were and it if worked for you.

My story is very similar to yours. We took clomid ONE time and got pregnant with Ali. I thought having a second child would be just as easy - wrong! We have now been tttc #2 for 2 and a half years. I have been on clomid doses up to 200mg., had ovarian drilling surgery and still nothing. I never ovulate on my own. This time (ttc#2), my first three cycles of clomid were with my OB that delivered Ali and then he sent me on to another doctor that was capable of doing IUI in office. Well, this second doctor did my ovarian drilling and took me up to 200mg. of clomid, but I still didn't ovulate. So, we took a break for a few months and now I am back to seeing my old OB. He has me on gluc (I take the generic - metformin) and wants me to get it in my body for a few months and then we will try the clomid again. One thing I love about my OB is that he monitors very well - u/s on CD 12 and 14 to monitor the follicles and then he will do an additonal on on CD16 if the follicles still aren't mature. He also does the hCG shot with me, which the in-between doc wouldn't do. I attribute alot of the success of my getting pregnant with Ali to the hCG shot. I am not excited about waiting these months to try, but I am excited that we have a plan ready. I am a planner and there is one lesson I have learned from IF, it's that you can't plan everything. My doctor seems to think that the met and clomid combo will work and I am hopeful.
The side effects are not fun, but heck, is anything IF related fun? Be prepared for lots of tummy issues when you first start taking it. For me, the tummy issues have gotten alot better over time, but I have read about women that have them up until they get pregnant. Good luck with whatever you decide! And, btw, I lurk in your journal and I am so sorry for everything you have gone through lately. I also have the PCOS diet book and loosely follow it. My doctor didn't say I had to follow it, but I figure whatever I can do to help, I will do! Let me know if you want more information about anything.

Thank you so much Kimberly. Yes, my stomach has been upset all day.. but I won't complain yet because if it works it will all be worth it. My dr. is really positive about the gluc/clomid combo too.. I hope he is right!

well you know my story too Dori, since we chatted the other night, but like yours and Kimberly's docs, mine seems to be optimistic about the met/clomid combo. I think it's just a matter of time before you are PG again

I don't have much time to post right now...but I just wanted to encourage all of you to think positively on the Met/clomid combo. It was the magic combo that got Riley here! The gastrointestinal pyrotechnics are a small price to pay. I wish you all the very best of luck!

Dori- The first month I was on the gluc I got pregnant! It was like it shocked my system! I always ovulate even on the smallest dosages of medications but that was the change that my body needed. I was on tamoxifen at the time but again a very small dose. Every body's different and I haven't been pregnant since but that one first month it made a huge difference!

Kimberly, I am new to this site. Brief history - I have been diagnosed with ovulatory dysfunction. We have been ttc #1 for 10 months and I have tried Clomid at 50 and 100mg with no ovulation. I have had an ultrasound of my ovaries and have lots of follicles (my OB said I will have babies one day, but it's just a matter of making me ovulate). I took one month of Glucophage b/c my OB thought I may have PCOS b/c of the many follicles shown on the ultrasound. Blood work proved that I didn't so I quit Glucophage. I am now on my first month of Femara and have yet to ovulate (it is now CD 17 so I don't think that I will). I go back to the OB on Jan 3rd.
Your post hit close to home for me b/c I have always been a planner too and when we couldn't get pg right when i wanted to I was devastated. I'm not sure what the next step will be for us. She may increase Femara mg? I hate shots but would be willing to go on injectables. I am glad to get to talk about everything - it helps with the frustration! Keep us in your prayers as you all are in mine!! |
