Haircuts

I'm wondering at what age did your toddler first have a haircut? I know for the boys it will be earlier than the girls (probably). Zoe is now 18 months and her hair is out of control. I've trimmed her bangs once before (time to for sure do that again)... but I'm now considering cutting off her length as well. My poor daughter inherited my super fine thin limp hair. It's much fuller on the top of her head right now than in the back... it just hangs there like silly little whisps. But I am scared to try to cut it myself and make it worse. Are there places that specialize in cutting hair of children this young? What have you all done? My concern is that 1) she'll be terrified and 2) there is no way she would sit still? Thanks in advance for the input.

Isabelle just had her first haircut about a month ago (at 26 months- yeah, she's a late bloomer for hair ). She didn't really "need" it, but she was looking a bit scraggly- and it was amazing how much of a change there was, with such a little bit of hair trimmed! I didn't do it myself- I'm horrible with hair, and wanted to make it a special occaision. We went to a place that specializes in children's hair...I'm not sure how you'd find a place like that...I just happened to see it when I was in the strip mall parking lot Although I know at least one of the "chain" places (i.e. Great Clips, SuperCuts, etc.) has a special "children's chair" which is basically a little car, or activity station, or something for them to play in while they get there hair cut. Maybe some one else will remember?

Isabelle wasn't scared at all...but she's a bit older and pretty fearless (plus DH and I were both there...DH to distract her as necessary, and me to take pictures )

Jen - Well...Richard had his first haircut at 6 months done by daddy, and he's had one pretty much every 2mths since. But...the most recent one we took him to Sears and they did a great job !!! We wanted the clippers, but he cried when she turned them on so she did the scissors and gave him a good trim...the trick for him? We let him have a sucker, kept him so busy he didn't care what was going on. I'm not a big one on giving them candy, but it kept him quiet for 20 minutes while she cut and he loved it .

Good luck!!

No real haircuts yet, we really want it to all be one length someday (no bangs). But I figure sometime soon she will need it trimmed, just because it hasn't grown in exactly even, but it just got long enough for pigtails, so we will wait at least a few months since that is the only way to keep it out of her eyes for now. If she were a boy she probably would of gotten her first real haircut at about 10 months.

We've taken Alex to get his hair cut twice now - he just turned 17 months. The first time we went to a place called Snip Its which is a franchise that specializes in kids:

He wasn't thrilled, but it came out really great:

The second time he just went to a regular salon with my FIL. We tried trimming his hair at home, but both DH and I agreed it was much better left to the professionals! He's due for another cut now - so it looks like we're on a schedule to go every two months.

Joe had his first right around his first birthday. We found a great children's place - they have TVs at all the chairs so they can watch videos, and video games for the older kids. It costs a couple bucks more than supercuts and those places but it's so worth it. Joe will actually let them use clippers there.

Matthew's first haircut was at 6 months and he gets them about every 2 months or so. We've tried everything... barber, kids specialty, Great Clips. He does best with older, sterner barbers. I guess he's scared of them??

Tyler is 14 months and had 3 haircits, his first one was around 11 months. We go to a place called "Cool Cuts 4 Kids" It has TV's with moves at every station and a fire truck with a working steering wheel for him to turn. There is also video games to play while the kids wait but he is too young for that.
He LOVES it!!

Aidan's had his haricut a few times since his 1st b-day. He always throws a holy fit, so I take him to the place of least resistance....its a haircut place inside a local children's clothing boutique. They specialize in little kids and have a TV w/ VCR and tons of toys & books. One time I tried to save myself $5 (whimsikidz charges $17) and took him to Supercuts. it was hell and they did a hack job. plus we had to wait 30 min past our appt time. Never again.
You can normally look in the yellow pages under childrens haircuts or whatever.

Caroline first had her haircut at 18 months old - and it was really past due, we waited ridiculously long, considering how much hair she has. Her hair is all one length (no bangs, because she has such a deep cowlick it would be pointless), and we just get it trimmed when it looks scraggly in the back. Our tricks for sitting still: M&Ms, and nail polish! Caroline is positively fascinated by nail polish, so we give her a quick once over before they start on her hair and she will sit and blow on her nails while they cut. If her nails dry before the cut is done, we pull out the M&Ms.

Cassidy didn't get her first haircut until 2 months before her 3rd birthday. I took her to the salon I go to, and I got mine done first. I also had a spinning Blue's Clues lollipop for her to have afterwards. She was a little hesitant, but once she was in the chair, she didn't budge.

Jack had his first haircut last summer, he was 20-21 months or so. He did NOT like it at all, we took him to my dad's barber and he was freaking out through the whole thing. The next time I'm going to try and find a place that's more kid friendly, I don't want to go through that again!

Christopher had his first "real" haircut at 19 months. I took him to the salon where I go and they did a decent job. I held him on my lap the whole time. Now DH cuts it with the clippers. He has very thick hair like me and it grows very fast. DH buzzes him about every 6 weeks.

Maggie is 21 months and still hasn't had a haircut.

She was another late bloomer as far as hair is concerned. Currently, she has some natural bangs going on, and although her hair is a little unruly, she's got these wonderful curls that I can't bring myself to cut. Someone once told me that their little one's curls never grew back after the first haircut, so I've been worried about cutting her hair ever since! Maggie also still has a couple patches of not so much hair (not exactly bald spots, but close) and I think that a haircut would only accentuate those.
