toddler still not sleeping all night?

Anyone else with a toddler that does not sleep all the way through the night? My daughter takes it in spells and we co-sleep often, but she usually does not sleep through the night. It makes for one tired mommy, especially since I work every day and have an 8 year old son to also raise.

My son is the same way. We have been co-sleeping again for a while. It started again when he was sick just before Christmas. We try to make sure he isn't over tired or hungry when he goes down.
He is almost 22 months old. I am hoping that once he gets his tubes in his ears he will sleep better because he won't have all the ear infections that keep happening.
I wish I had some advice to offer you but I don't just a hug.

My daughter had tubes put in last April (2003) and that helped some with her personality as far as being grouchy and irritable but the sleeping never changed for her. She is going through another surgery for her adenoids to be removed next month and we are hoping this will help. I think her breathing is what keeps waking her up.

Brooke is a jewel in the rough
If I do not go in and cover Rebekah up after she initially falls asleep, she wakes up cold around 3am. We even have a heater in her room and she's usually wearing a blanket sleeper and an undershirt or onesie and socks. But she still wakes up.

My Shoham ....
She drinks btw 2-3 middle-sized Avent bottles a night (i.e. demands her bottle of tea -half asleep unless it takes her sleepy/overtired mom too long, and then she has a full-blown tantrum in the middle of the night)- and what do you know? Pampers CAN'T possibly hold that amount of pee. That makes for additional cry around 12-2 am because she is cold and wett with her totally full diaper...

My one year old still wakes all hours of the night. We have tried every arrangement and it seems to work best if he sleeps with my husband in the bed and he gives him sips of water when he wakes.

Shel is an unknown quantity
Riley has probably only slept all night straight through 20 times, IN TWO YEARS (plus a month and a half) Add the 9 weeks of preterm labor where I was taking meds every 4 hours at night, plus a 10 year old and an 8 year old and I've probably not slept all night long in 6 years

Hi,
I am glad to find out that I am not the only one with a toddler NOT sleeping through the night. I let her cry it out and start sleeping through the night at around 10 months. BUT..we were remodeling the house and we started co-sleeping with her. Now I put her in her crib when she is asleep and she wakes up upset, crying Hi Mama, Mommy, No More(I am trying to wean her). It is HARDER now b/c she is so verbal.

Does anybody have suggestions?

She goes to be late (9-10pm) and wakes up early..about 5am. If I hear one more mom tell me that I should have done BABYWISE..I will scream. (THat is where you put them down awake and they train themselves to go to sleep and to put themselves back to sleep in the middle of the night).
Thanks,
ALison

Hilary is a name known to all
Madelynn had been waking up in the middle of the night quite often until recently.

We used to lay down with her in our bed to get her to go to sleep, then put her in her bed. Well, I decided I couldn't possibly do this when I have a newborn, so I've been teaching her to fall asleep on her own in her bed and she's been sleeping much better!

Well, we have had troubles with Hailey since birth as far as the sleeping drama goes. We have tried EVERYTHING...aside from putting up a gate to make her stay in her room at night. She is almost three so dh doesnt feel that that is appropriate. Well, lets see...She has been on a nightly routine once we figured out what time she started getting tired. We put her down at 7pm. We begin by pj's, reading, and singing, then it is lights off and love ya yadda yadda...then IF she falls asleep she usually wakes up in about 1 to 2 hours. Then it is a struggle to get her to go back to bed. Usually it is a struggle to get her to nod out after the songs. She has always been strong headed and it is a nightmare most every night. She LOVES to get up and come to our room to sneak into our bed. I cant sleep when she is in bed with us cuz there just inst enough room. There are very few if any nights where she actually stays asleep through the night...and IF this miracle actually happens, I still do not get any normal sleep since I am so conditioned to getting up a million times a night to put her back in her bed. So, there isnt enough coffee on earth to help me deal when on top of all this she REFUSES to take a nap. Whats up with this? Some nights she thinks its play time from 2am till 7am and is still up for the day and will NOT take a nap....ummm hello! How on earth does she function? The white noise doesnt work, the night light, or no night light doesnt work. The bath only stimulates her. The calming music only makes dh want to commit suicide (thats a sarcastic musing from him) but it does absolutley nothing for Hailey. Massage only creates what Hailey thinks of as a ticklefest! What do I do? I am at a complete and udder loss! And she isnt even three yet!

Oh man, really? Will there ever be a light at the end of our non sleeping tunnel?

Just curious, why is a gate inappropriate? I can't imagine allowing my almost three-year-old daughter free access to the house while we are sleeping!

Is she on a schedule? That could help a lot. Her body would be conditioned to fall asleep at certain times. Also, when she gets up at night, is she allowed to be up or does she have to lay in her bed?

One reason I know we do not use a gate at Emma's door is that I don't like the idea of her not being able to get to me if she needs to. We do have a gate at the top of the stairs so she can only get to the bedrooms. Plus, she always wakes up crying and does expect us to come to her. IF she does get out of bed, she comes straight to us.

However, I do think this depends on each child. If my next child is the type that will get up in the middle of the night and start wandering around then I would block them off in the appropriate way. (For example, if they can't open doors yet, close off all doors but ours.) If they can open doors and safety would be comprised (bathrooms) then a gate would go in the doorway.

Well, Hailey is on a regular schedule. She just chooses to not go to bed nicely...usually a struggle. And if she wakes up after sleeping and we are all still up...she is lead right back to her bed. During the course of the night she wakes up and heads straight for our room...and I hobble out of bed and lead her back to her room. Some times I do this so many times in a night that I lay down with her and end up falling asleep in her bed.

Of course on the bright side to all of this: The last 3 nights she has only woken up maybe twice. So we have ALL been pretty much sleeping more. I am so happy, but I know that there are many ups and downs...like the potty training. We almost got it kicked, but there are still accidents here and there.
