Not walking at almost 14 months?

Olivia is almost 14 months and is still not walking. She doesn't want to even try. My babysitter (who has a big mouth ) keeps yapping at me to have her checked. I personally don't think anything is wrong, she was 5 weeks early, so she might be a smidge behind others.

When did your little ones start walking?

Kristen, I have no advice for you, but I know what you're going through. Jackson is 13 1/2 months and isn't walking yet either. If I had a dime for every person that asked me, "Is he walking yet?"... well, it would be one crazy Christmas in this house!

I wouldnt worry about it. My girlfriends little girl didnt walk until a little later either. Poor Caliese was so annoyed by everyone always asking her if she was yet. Enjoy it!! Life Changes once she is up and about!

I wouldn't worry, especially because she was early. Cameron didn't walk until 13 months. I didn't walk until 16 months. She will figure it out. All babies develop at a different pace.

I thought the average age for first steps was 13 months? If that's true, then Olivia is doing just fine - especially since she was born a little early.

I think that a baby's personality has a lot to do with walking age. Some people have go-go-go babies that place a high priority on moving. Others are more mellow and content to sit and watch everybody else go by.

Cool! I was a tiny bit worried since all of my friends kids started walking before a year. You should see the look on people's faces when they ask if she is walking, it's pure disappointment when I answer no! So weird!

If she was 5 weeks early she would only be 13 months now. I've heard of lots of kids walking closer to 15 months.

I had the same problem in that Matthew didn't crawl until he was almost 11 months. He started walking 3 weeks later, though. I heard all kinds of crap for him not crawling.

Carson was 15 weeks early and didn't walk until he was about 16½ months old. I wouldn't worry too much.

Caroline was two days shy of fifteen months before she even took a step - I jokingly called her "jelly knees" because she would NEVER walk holding on to our fingers like so many other toddlers do. But two days after she started walking, she was walking full-time! It's totally nothing to worry about, although I did every single day.

Don't be worried. My Christopher didn't take his first step until he was 14 months and didn't really walk well until he was 15 months old. However, Patrick, my 9 month old seems ready to take off walking any day now! I really wish he would wait like his brother did!

My Alexia also started walking at 16 1/2 mos. with ONE difference....she wasn't born early. She was actually born 1 wk. late. She did/does have poor muscle tone in her legs and arms which resulted in developmental delays, and she was receiving lots of therapy...which I know helped. If your daughter seems ok and on track with everything else, I really wouldn't worry at all. heck, Alexia didn't even pull to stand until she was 14 mos. old! Even starting to walk on the later side which would be 15-18 mos, is not unheard of at all...and this was told to me by Alexia's therapist.

Rory started walking just before Christmas of last year, and I think, even then, she was still a little unsteady (I honestly can't remember!). So, to be fair, I'd say she was about 13.5 months...yes, I worried about it, but that's normal! And so is Olivia! :D

It's normal to worry about these things when you always hear about the other babies excelling so quickly. I'm the same way. It's hard not to compare but I think everyone does to some degree. But all kids are different and need to learn things at their own pace.

Kristen, it is normal for children to walk at varying times. I have a friend whose daughter didn't walk until she was in her 16th month. She just didn't want to try it for a long time. Please try not to let it worry you.

My daughter started walking at 10 1/2 months old and my son started right after his first birthday. So they were a little different as far as that goes.

Have you thought about buying a toy that will encourage her to stand up and hold on to it? I had one of those push toys with wheels given to my daughter last year at Christmas and as soon as she could pull herself up to it she was trying to push it around. I think that helped her a lot.

I also think it's very normal to want to compare your child to other children. My daughter is going on 19 months old and still not saying very much and I worry about that now.

I believe this whole-heartedly! Mason is a non-stop kid and he was walking at about 10½ months. His cousin didn't even roll over until she was 10½ months. All kids develop at different rates, but it doesn't help to have people nagging you about it. And it is hard not to compare to others. I am sure there are other areas where she excels over other kids her age.

I agree not to worry... it's just too soon. You can adjust for her prematurity until she turns 2 when she should be caught up to her peers. It is normal for children not to walk up until 16 months... That gives you plenty of time. But I think I WOULD try to challenge her more and increase her interest in walking, as someone else suggested. Is she up to date on her other milestones? Does she pull up to stand and cruise furniture? If she does these things, but just lacks the interest and/or confidence to try letting go yet, I would REALLY not worry. As always, if you have any serious concerns you should talk to your doctor.

I'm another one who says not to worry (although secretly I was a little concerned)

Alexandria didn't walk until she was 17 months old so you have a bit of time up your sleeve yet!
