The "NO" stage....

How many of your lil' ones are in the "NO!" stage? Alexia is in that stage...however she doesn't say NO (YET..thank god) but she is in the "shaking-her- head-back-and-forth-no stage. I'll ask "Alexia..do you want ____" Her response is [shakes head no back and forth]. "Alexia...can you throw the diaper out in the garbage?" She's even shaking her head no to this and she use to LOVE doing it. A trick I learned: when she says no, I don't make a big deal of it at all. After she frantically shakes her head no I'll say "ok" then I'll just hold it in my hand. Soon after guess who's throwing it away? She is!

She'll even try to be smart and I ask her for a kiss she'll shake her head no....so I'll just say "ok...no kiss for mommy". Then what does she do?....gives me a kiss. Whenever she says no (well in her case shakes her head no), she always looks at my face for a reaction....which I give her none! Then she will almost ALWAYS soon after do whatever it was that she said no to.

Anyone else going thru this NO stage?

not only does he say it, but he has different inflections, depending on the situation

plus, he has what i call 'mad hands'...he says no, puts up his hands like diana ross singing 'stop in the name of love' and shakes . it's downright hilarious. i've yet to get it on film though

tony is extremely stubborn (hmm..he must get that from marc ) and reverse psychology doesn't work on him!

Joe is big into No these days. But then he does what we tell him to do anyway. I think he just likes saying it.

Oh man! We have NO! screamed, no pointing at me, stop it and pointing at me, shut up and pointing at me. All sorts of variations, which I believe she learned at daycare. Thank goodness Friday is her last day!

Yep....there ya go: Never mind, she started saying "NO" this evening. She had a MASSIVE blowout of a temper & crankiness ALL this evening (the worst one EVER!) (she's also teething...I think her canines AND 2 yr. molars could be coming in at the same time...I have to check for sure) and I ask her to do something and she said that dreadful word....twice. See...I jinxed myself that's for sure!

Oh gosh, that's all I hear. He says no to everything lately, even if he doesn't mean it. Actually, he just says nothing if I ask him something and his answer would be yes because he seems to have forgotten how to say yes . He has a no for every occasion. I especially love the long, drawn out, nooooooo (sounds like of like new, but held for a long time).

Liam says no - long, drawn out and high pitched (have no idea where he got that). Sometimes he points when he says, sometimes not.

Micayla is in that stage too. She loves to point at me at the same time as telling me No. I'll be glad when this stage is over.

I have been in the "no" stage for some time now. My daughter is going on 19 months old. I don't remember using the word quite as much with my son at this age, although I remember using it alot. I do tap her on the top of her hand sometimes to get on to her when she is doing something she shouldn't and now she will just hit her own self on the top of the hand if I start getting on to her. It's really cute how she does that.

Mason's latest is "I mean no Mommy!" usually I'll say something like, "can I have a kiss?" and he'll say "no" (the short quick high pitched sort of clipped "no") and I say "what do you mean no?" and he'll say "I mean no mommy!" so I say "no means no!" It's quite funny. He also says NO Milo! and shakes his finger at the cat. Very cute!

He doesn't often say it to be defiant, but if, for instance, he doesn't want a nap and it's naptime, I'll pick him up to take him as he's yelling no and then we jump up the stairs, or march or walk goofy and he forgets all about it. The worst is when he pitches a fit at the Wal-Mart about going in the seat part of the cart. Then I'll say, you have to go in this part if you want to run. So he settles down, I strap him in and run as fast as I can to the store. People look at us like we're crazy, but it works, and he stays in because he has to be there so we can run back to the car. I find distraction works wonders right now.

Oh yes! Zoe's been saying "no" with intent since before she turned one.She actually started out signing it to us before she added the word. Now when she says it she REALLY means it! Fortunately, she also says "yes" or "ok"... so when I ask her if she wants to do something or eat something, etc... she answers truthfully. That makes it SO much easier! We are also fortunate in that she very rarely says "no" just to be obstinate. The only time she'll do that is when she is REALLY tired or hungry. For the most part she is an amazingly amiable and cooperative baby. I don't see HOW I'm going to be this lucky with number 2!

Resurrecting this thread. Josiah says No a lot, and about half the time he doesn't mean it. He'll give me the sign for water, I'll get him a cup of water, go to hand it to him, he'll say "NO" while reaching out for it then drinking it. Drives me nuts.

We're trying to teach him what No means... like in the above scenario saying, "oh... you DON'T want the water? OK." and not giving it to him. Which of course leads to crying and whining. Then telling him he needs to say "YES" when he wants it.

Please tell me this will pass soon. It's driving me nuts. (That said, just in the last day or two we've gotten a few responses of "k", which, while not "yes", I think is supposed to mean "OK" which I'll gladly take!)

Susan, I totally forgot I even started this thread! I'll tell you this, that was 1 1/2 yrs. ago, and yes it will pass!!! Alexia is now 3 yrs. and 2 mos. and she always obliges when I tell her to do something (well, with the occassional "NO!" here and there...typical 3 yr. old stuff) but no where near how it was back then. Don't worry....it gets better...much better! That phase didn't last too long for her, not that I can recall anyway. Reverse psychology always worked with her.

Sure Dawn, the no phase goes away and is replaced by the sassy back-talk stage. Just something to look forward to Susan.

Julian does this, too. I get "no" a lot. When I can, I go along with it. For example, if I ask him if I can have a bite of whatever he's eating, he'll say "no" very matter-of-factly. I'll say, OK, no french fry for mama. Nine times out of ten he'll then take one off his plate and feed it to me.

And I've asked him before if he says no just because he likes the word. His response? "Yeah."
