I'm trying to figure out how many newborn diapers and covers I'll need. I noticed most go up to 15 lbs. How long did your baby stay in newborn diapers? I'm mostly going to use prefolds for the beginning, so I know that doesn't really matter, but I'm not really sure how many covers I should get.
TIA,

It really depends on how big your babe is at birth and how fast they grow. My son was 7lbs 15oz at birth but at 7 months weighs just 15lbs and can actually still fit in some newborn diapers. I used Size 0 Kissaluvs and prorap covers for the first 2 months, then I switched to other fitteds and wool covers.
Infant prefolds still fit him now but the premiums are too big, regular prefolds are a little less bulky I've found and work great when they grow out of the infants.

I would suggest about 6 covers

I agree - Charlie was in small covers until he was 3-5 months old depending on the brand of cover and what was under them. I skipped newborn and got strictly smalls - I just rolled them over the first few weeks and that worked fine for us. Alot of the newborn covers only fit to 9-10 lbs and that can be fairly quickly outgrown if you have an 8-9 lber. The other thing you can do is get 2NB and 4-5 Smalls and see how they fit. Do you have a place where you can buy covers locally?

Thanks Christy and Jennie.

I am able to buy the rubber covers in Wal-mart or Babies R Us, but I got a prowrap and bummis cover and prefer the feel of those to just the rubber ones. I'm not getting a lot of postive feedback from people who live around me about wanting to cloth diaper, which is making it very hard for me to figure out what all needs to be done. I don't know what I would do without you ladies here! :)

I tried prefolds with Isaiah, he was 6lbs 10ozs. I had the infant prefolds and found that I don't like them on a newborn, yeah they fit longer but they are way too bulky on such a tiny baby. I had better luck with kissaluvs size 0's and NB/SM contours. I didn't get to use my cloth diapers with Isaiah much though since he had a hip harness and unless I put them on so lose they leaked they wouldn't fit with his harness. This time Im buying Little lambs AIO's since they are less bulky, but Ill also be using the kissaluvs. Preemie prefolds would work well too and I might end up getting some.

I found most newborn covers (wraps) didn't fit my daughter (more acurately, her chunky legs  ) and the ones I have go up to 11lbs; she was 8lbs 8oz when born. I like the NB wool Stacinators and can tell they should fit for a while. The small rubber ones should fit for a while (I could still get DS in one when he was over a year old and he was chunky  ).

If I weren't using washcloths instead of prefolds for the most part, I would definately buy some newborn/preemie prefolds. I didn't think I'd like them but I do. I only have a handfull of real ones but enjoy using them. I was using them for doublers with DS before, so they do have life outside the newborn stage. I pin them :)

Don't let anyone get you discouraged, Michelle. When people find out I'm using cloth on my daughter, they say it won't last, but then I mention I've been doing it for more than two years on my son and that shows them!! i have two in cloth and still love it (even when I have to do a load of laundry everyday, lol!!). When you get into it and see what a difference it makes in so many ways, it is super easy! Good luck!
