View Full Version : poop smell

Well, I tried one of the fuzzi bunz that I ordered for Carter. They held great. He wore two today (since that's all I ordered) - the first one was just pee - no problem. The second was poopy. WHOA! It really smelled bad. I assume it's just because I am used to the smell when he goes in the disposable. Even dh was like "OMG! I don't think I can get used to that smell!"
Anyway, my real question has to do with washing them. Since I only have the two diapers, I washed them as soon as the poopy one came off. I did a cold rinse, then I did a hot wash (with maybe an 1/8 cup of All Free and Clear), a cold rinse, and another cold rinse. The one he just peed in smelled fine, but the one he pooped in still smells bad. So, I did the same thing minus the cold rinse first. It still smells. So I through it in the dryer. I wanted to dry them one more time before I started hanging them up to dry. Maybe I didn't wash them enough times to break them in? I don't know.
Everything I can find on smelly diapers is all about the urine smell, not the poop smell. Is there something I can do to fix this? I was told that I really didn't need to use baking soda and vinegar. OH, and the diaper is beautiful - no stains at all, just smell! And, I washed most of the poop off before I put it in the washer.
Anyway, if anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I thought about posting over at MDC, but I've only posted a few times and thought I would ask here first.

 I know you aren't supposed to use free and clear detergents (I did for a long time though), but I can't imagine that is the problem. :dunno: I've only had urine smell problems and it was with the hemp inserts not the FBs. I would ask whoever you bought them from as well. Or even contact MOE directly. I hope you can figure it out!

The other thing you can do to mask the odours is to add a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil. I do find occasionally that Charlie will have a nasty stinky poop and the odour lingers a little but if it's sunny out, I put it out in the sun for an hour or two and that seems to help as well.
And yes - you should try and avoid the "free & clear" detergents. I use regular Tide and I find it's been the best for us - less smells, etc.

Thanks! I heard a lot of people recommending the free and clear especially for diapers, but when I went to research this, I found a lot of people saying that they didn't like it. Go figure! OK, I'll try something else. I think we have Whisk. THat should probably work. I've also heard that using Tide all the time isn't good because it's too harsh. Any thoughts on that?

Whisk didn't work after 2 washes, and neither did the Tide! UGH!
I don't know how this is going to work if I get a stinky diaper every single time. I'm so worried that they will smell really horrible when he pees or poops next time.

Bummer. I've been using FBs for 13 months and NEVER had a problem with poop (or anything else) smelling. Just thinking out loud here...
- I've always used either Wisk or Tide.
- Like you said, cold rinse, then hot wash, then rinse again.
- Before Josiah was on solids I never rinsed the poopy diapers at all. The "BF" poop came right out.
- Once Josiah started solids, I started using liners inside (I'll dig up the name if you'd like) to catch the poop. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Sometimes I'm lucky and just dump the whole wad in the toilet and have no poop on the diaper at all. Sometimes the poop is very soft, gets all over the diaper and I rinse it out in the toilet to get it off before throwing it in the diaper champ.
- I've used oxyclean to get stains out, but I don't think this has a positive or negative impact on smells.
- The most I've gone between washing is 3 days - but even then didn't have smell issues.
HHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM... I wonder if somehow you got a defective one? I just can't for the life of me figure out why it still smells.

I second the suggestion on the tea tree oil for stinky diapers. I use alot of hemp diapers and they can get really stinky but I have finally found a system that works for us. You may have to play with it a little but this is what I do with our.
First I do a Cold wash w/ 1/4 cup of baking soda. Then I do a hot wash w/ 10 drops of tea tree oil and then a second cold rinse. About once every week I do a wash with a shot of Sportwash. That's it and ever since I switch I have had no smelly diapers, the tea tree oil really does work wonders with smells!

Cool guys! I'm going to have to try the tea tree oil. Also, another one of my friends told me about the liners, so I'll have to try those too.
I thought if you used baking soda, you had to use vinegar too - or is it the other way around? Hmmm.... I'll try that too. I think I'll probably let Carter wear it again and then try some of this stuff, especially since I don't have the tea tree oil yet.
I'll let you know what happens once I do all this.

Well, the smell is slightly better now after they are dried and I used Tide. We wore both diapers yesterday again. Of course, he pooped in the one that wasn't pooped in before and only peed in the one that had the poop smell in it.
So, here's what happened. I used Tide and that's it. I plan to get some tea tree oil and to possibly try the baking soda and vinegar, but I wasn't up for it last night - I couldn't remember how much and didn't feel like looking it all up. So, they both now have the poop smell, so I'm guessing it wasn't a defective diaper, especially since they are different colors (not the same batch of diapers). The one that had the poop smell did not smell horrible when he peed in it - that's good news. I'm guessing that the tea tree oil or maybe the baking soda will work well for us. I'll have to try that later.
The one thing that I prefer about the disposables is that they are so much thinner. Carter just looks quite bulky with the fuzzi bunz on. I think I can used to it though. I'm not sure if I'll order more for him or if not. I'll have to check out ebay or maybe try to get some used ones. He's in xl, so I don't know how common those are. We might not ever need them for this next baby, so I'm not sure how much I want to spend on them.

I think you just kind of get used to cloth diaper bum. Riley looks too skinny if I put him in a disposable
I have some liners(not flushable0 that you can have to try out if you want them. Just pm me your address.

Carter is 35 ponds and about 37 inches or so.
They smell a bit better. I'm washing them with tea tree oil tonight, so we'll see what happens.

I agree. I feel like my girls just slip right out of my arms with a sposie on!
