View Full Version : How long does your daycare close over Christmas?

Our daycare center closes for the entire week between Christmas and New Year's. Depending on what day of the week the holidays are on, it can be closed as long as a week and 2 days. I think it's totally ridiculous, especially since it's an expensive center. So I'm just curious if a lot of other daycare centers do this.

really!!! i haven't heard of any centers doing that, we have bright horizons here in my company and i know they don't close for a week. in fact i think they are only closed for the holiday.
i would be pretty damn annoyed at that, what are you supposed to do?
(i have in-home that basically never closes)

Ours closes for Christmas day and a half day on Christmas Eve. I agree ---that is totally ridiculous. When I used to run a daycare, we wold take a poll to see who would need daycare and if more than 75% of the kids werent going to be there, then we'd close on whatever days those were. But I think that happened ONCE - like when the day after Xmas was Friday.

Ours closes on Christmas and New Years Day, otherwise they take a poll to see who's going to be in so they can give employees time off.
:owow:
I can't believe they close for a week. I assume you still have to pay?

Nice countdown, Karri
Matthew's daycare closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. They'd usually close Christmas Eve/NYE or be open a 1/2.
That policy is totally ridiculous!

Of course we still have to pay, otherwise it wouldn't bother me so much. From their standpoint, if they can do it, why not? It's a great daycare, so with a choice of dealing with this or switching daycares, we deal with this. But it still ticks me off.

Before we got private care for Ashton, the daycare she was in was open 24/7, every day of the year. Casinos never close their doors and employees may need care on a holiday.

We are just starting the boys in Kindercare, their policy is to only close on stat holidays, they do shut shop at 3pm the day before Xmas/New years.
One of the other daycares we looked at closed for two weeks over the christmas break.

Ours is closed for the week between Christmas and New Year's but I have private in-home care. I've never heard of it at a center. When Dylan was in Kindercare, they only closed on the actual holidays.

And yes, I still have to pay. This is part of her two weeks paid vacation.

Yep, ours closes for the week between Christmas & New Year's and we still have to pay. It's an in home daycare as well. Get ready for this, Patti is closed for 5 weeks (starting this week until after Labor Day) during the summer! We don't have to pay her and we knew this going in. Fortunately, I have lots of family support and it's such a great daycare, I don't mind so much.

Not ours, but my friend sent her boys to a large in-home type place (several teachers and rooms, but out of a house) and they closed for 3 weeks a year: 2 over the summer and 1 during the Christmas holidays. What a pain that was for them. (They just moved them last month.)

Our in home daycare closes for 1-2 weeks over Christmas, and yes we still have to pay. She is also closed for a week before labor day. So I feel your pain. :blue:

When I had Victoria at the the in-home daycare they were only closed for the holiday itself but did close early on the Christmas Eve and NYE. They did, however, close for two weeks at the beginning of July and we had to pay for those two weeks even though she wasn't there plus pay the sitter we hired to watch Victoria while they were closed.

My son is going to in-home daycare, and our babysitter closes also for the entire X-mas week. The daycare center my daughter used to go to closed only for the holidays: 24th - half a day, 25th-closed. There is one daycare franchise in our area - Goddard Schools - they close for the entire week.

I just got our 2004-2005 schedule today. Our center is closed Dec 22, 23, 24 (Wed-Fri) for winter vacation and maintenance. And they close at 2pm on Dec 31 for New Year's eve.

I'm glad you brought this up - I have no idea and will ask next week - I'm not sure what we'll do if they're closed.
