View Full Version : Cloth in the Hospital

I'm so excited! We've decided to use cloth diapers in the hospital! :yippee:
I made sure it's ok and they're fine with it. I made a bunch of NB fitteds (there's at least a dozen, but I have more cut out if I can get around to making them), some infant UBCPF, a couple newborn prefolds, pins, a few NB diaperap covers, some NB pull on covers and a NB wool Stacinator. I may pack more as I'd rather overpack than not have enough (I may be in there for several days depending on how things go). Oh and I need to bring something to put the dirty ones in.
I probably don't need to bring the covers, but thought I would just in case (some people who use cloth in the hospital say they dont' bother with covers, but I want to have some just in case). I may pack some liners too so we won't have to worry about the meconium (sp?) staining. I haven't decided between flushable ones or maybe making a bunch out of fleece or old t-shirt material to just chuck away.
I'm so excited! Half my suitcase is baby stuff, lol!! I really want to take responsibility right from the start with the care and providing for this baby.

WOW! I didn't even think about this. I don't think we are going to do it in the hospital. Part of the reason will be that I won't be able to do a lot of the diapering because of my c-section.
I think we'll wait until we get home. Good luck though - it sounds very exciting!

You could also use some old face cloths as liners or even diapers for the first few days if you wanted Carla.

I did pack some face cloths to use in wraps if get low since (I don't know if I'd be able to pin them). I bought 3 dozen good ones to use as early prefolds (they're the same size as the newborn prefolds), but I got caught up in diaper cuteness  . I've been using them as wipes for Ethan meanwhile, although I'll probably still try them :).

Good luck! We used Kissaluvs and proraps on the hospital and it could not have been easier! We were only in for 2 days and I had enough to get me through just barely, surprisingly the meconium didn't stain at all.
It was a blast and the nurses kept coming in and commenting on how cute they were

I'm SO excited! :yippee: We'll be using cloth the time we're in the hospital too (and hopefully I end up with the VBAC I want and we'll only be at the hospital a few hours max after birth!)

Best of luck with the VBAC ladies!! It was an amazing experience and I loved being able to go home 4 hrs after Charlie's arrival.
Carla - have you checked out the BittyBuns?? They are very very similar to Kissaluvs but I find that they are even softer if that is possible. They are soooooooo cute!

 Our hospital used cloth, so we didn't have a choice. We weren't planning on CDing at that time, and DH thought it was so weird that they used cloth. But they did - and washed it for us, and changed DD, etc., so it was a nice intro! They just used prefolds and prowraps. Simple but effective. :)

Jennie 4 HOURS?!? :ack: We were in for 48 hours (12 of those were waiting for Gab's X-rays though  ). I can't imagine going home so soon.

If I have an uncomplicated vaginal delivery we'll be there only 4-6 hours after birth. :)

I was told to expect to be in for 2 days, but I know they're going to need the beds, so if I get my VBAC, I may be out sooner. I expect about a 2 day stay if I have another c-section (about what I had last time). I dont' know why they have longer stays as my aunt was only in for a few hours after having her kids 6-8 years ago (she complained, but I wouldn't mind).
Jennie, I have so many diapers, I'm scared to get any more  . I think I heard of them, though. I'd probably go nuts if I got some. Once upon a time I was looking at the Kissaluv's 0's, but they're hard to get. I saw them in seconds, but they wouldn't ship to Canada  . I'm happy with what I have. I'll probably have another big baby so I hate to have too much too small.
Anne, they stopped using cloth here 30 years ago. The nurse I asked was telling me all about it and how she missed the little cloth bums. I was hoping they still may have some, but I guess they jumped off that ship long ago  .

I delivered Katie at the University of Washington, in oh-so-crunchy Seattle, so I'm sure that's the reason they still use cloth. I'm not suprised that most of the hospitals use sposies now. It's probably much easier for them. And since they pass the cost along to you (or your insurance company) they don't care if it costs more.
Sending lots of prayers and VBAC vibes your way!
