A lot of you know about Nathan. He's turning two in a few weeks, and I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what to get him.

DH and I know we want to get him a toy of some sort. His mother told me he's below 6 months in all skill levels. He hasn't learned to hold up his head yet - just to give you a feel for where he is.

I've been looking at different toy websites, and I'm stumped! His mom said he likes things that light up and music. I found a few things, but I can't figure out what will work. I don't want to get something that he won't be able to enjoy for a while. Baby gyms and the like won't work because he is a larger than average size child for his age (almost 2) and he won't fit under them.

He doesn't sleep in a crib, so anything that would hook onto that is out.

What sorts of things should I look into? I want something educational, but not too far beyond him. I don't know how quickly he'll progress.

One Step Ahead has nice developmental toys. There used to be a store in Annapolis Mall but the website doesn't give store locations on it. http://www.onestepahead.com/jump.jsp?itemID=27191&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=117&iSubCat=27191&page=1&change=117

I'd probably look for things that are bright and colorful that he can hold on to (I'm assuming he grabs things or that they will be working on that with him). And most toys that are birth and up will interest kids for a long time. Rebekah eve still likes the baby toys.

Lamaze brand toys are also nice.

My mom got my son a v-tech "rock and roll" ball. It's very colorful, plays music and is somewhat educational. My son is only 2 months old, but she wanted to give him something he can look at (it lights up), hear, and kick in his playpen. We turn it on and put it in front of him when he's doing tummy time so that he has a reason to lift his head up.

Brooke - I honestly have absolutely no clue if he can grab things right now or not. But I agree they'll be working on that with him. I looked at the site and I am probably going to go with one or two things from there.

Kathy - I bet he'd like that toy. He likes music and things that light up. He does kick his feet, mainly when he hears music. I'll look for that. Thanks.

Would videos of any sort be bad? I was thinking of Blue's Clue's, Dora, and/or The Wiggles. I will have to ask if they have a DVD player and/or VCR because I have no idea. I am just not sure if he'd be able to enjoy something like that right now. Any thoughts?

If you're thinking about videos, I'd probably go with something like Baby Einstein. They are mostly bright colors with music and they won't over-stimulate him. The Wiggles also have alot of music and bright colors. Dora and Blue are mostly talking, I think.

I wish I'd seen this before. I already got him something! I will probably get something educational for my niece for Christmas and her birthday, so I'll check out your site then.

For those curious, I got him the Baby Einstein neighborhood animals DVD, and the Baby Einstein musical caterpillar toy.
