rich and i have been looking at our financial situation, and we've started to realize that i could really be earning a lot more money if i got a different job. i'm currently an event manager at a private university, and make less than $14/hour (i'm salaried though), and by the time i pay for health insurance and taxes, i bring home just over $10/hour. DEPRESSING! i have three years of experience at that and did some teaching before that (my degree is in political science and teaching social studies). i'm not going back to teaching, not that i could find a social studies job in minnesota anyway.
my question is two-fold.
is anyone going to hire an almost 7 month pg woman? (although at this point i'll be able to assure them that i'm the breadwinner, and i will be back after leave)
also, where do i even start on finding a new career/job so i can earn more? going back to school is not an option (for multiple reasons).
thanks for any advice!

Even though technically they can't discriminate against you if you're pregnant, I think the chances of you getting hired for a new job at 7+ months pregnant is pretty slim. Plus, since you carry the benefits for your family, I would think that would make it simpler to finish out your current job, take your maternity leave, then let them know you're not coming back.
In the meantime, research other careers you might want to try.

I agree with Jen - it's going to be really hard to find a new job when you're pregnant. And even if you do, you're not going to be covered by FMLA, so they might not let you take very much time off after you have the baby. I agree that your best bet is to stick with this job and then look for something new after you have the baby.
Good luck.

Another problem you may run into is if you carry the health insurance for the family, your pregnancy may not be covered with your new job's insurance.

My understanding is that a pregnancy is not considered a "pre-existing" condition and is therefore covered when you switch even if you're already pregnant. But I could be wrong. (It wouldn't be the first time  )
I really doubt you'll find many employers who'd be willing to hire someone as far along as you. As bad as it sounds, I can say that if I were looking for an employee I'd probably not even consider hiring someone that would be taking leave in less than 2 months.
I think you're better off just waiting until after the baby is here before you switch jobs.

You are correct. I have 15 years in the health insurance field and can confirm that it's law that pregnancy NOT be considered a pre-ex.
BUT - I also agree with everything else everyone said. FMLA would not apply to you, you may not be there long enough to qualify for STD, so I'd stay put, think and research while you're out on mat. leave, then do something.
