View Full Version : He's got a hernia!
Cynister June 29th, 2004, 06:39 PM I took my son to the Dr. today because his belly button is sticking out as if something was pushing it out from the inside. Also if you push on it, it kinda makes a squishing noise. Turns out he's got an umbilical hernia caused from the stomach muscles in the middle not being developed yet & the ones on the side developing & pushing forward. She tells me this is pretty common but usually goes away by age 2! Some not til age 5! Anyone else have this?
Sherry June 29th, 2004, 06:43 PM 2 of my kids do
My son is now 7yrs and still has it. After age 6 they recommend surgery.
My daughter now 10 mths, has one too, so, we will wait that one out as well.
I havent fixed my son's yet, but will soon. I had one too while prego with daughter, I of course had to have surgery. It wasnt too bad, so try not to worry. I hear its very common in smaller children etc...
Stacy June 29th, 2004, 07:52 PM I add to have hernia surgery when I was 2 weeks old. Mine, however, wasn't umbilical it was my ovary. I guess it had gotten twisted or something. I had to have it removed.
Melissa June 29th, 2004, 08:44 PM My nephews had little hernias too. Theirs went away by themselves.
Mandi June 30th, 2004, 10:24 AM My first daughter had one... a huge one actually. I thought for sure it'd not go away on it's own. But by about 6 months it had diminished greatly, and by 9 months it was totally gone. I can tell you that it bothered me alot more than it bothered her. It just looked so painful but she didn't even seem to notice it.
Here is a pic (sorry about the quality!) of hers. You can see how huge it was.

Sherry June 30th, 2004, 01:38 PM WOW that is huge, my kids just had a "depression" where theirs were.. Nothing sticking out except belly button, and that was only a little bit

Yeah, it was pretty nasty, wasn't it? As a first time Mom it freaked me out pretty bad.
Cynister June 30th, 2004, 06:06 PM Wow, thanks Mandi & Melissa for some reassuring stories that it does have a chance of going away. Nicolai's isn't as large as your daughter's, Mandi & you're right, it doesn't appear to hurt him at all. I did get nervous at hearing it squish when you touch it at first. I think his stick out about 1/2-3/4 of an inch.
LisaM June 30th, 2004, 07:12 PM My son's was alot smaller than the picture, but it went away about at 8 months of age.

Caurie July 2nd, 2004, 11:37 AM My son Brice also has an umbilical hernia. It is quite large and at 8 months has not gotten smaller (we actually think it is protruding more) It does not cause him any pain, but we are always checking it (especially if he is fussy) as in rare instances an intestinal strangulation can occur. We were also advised by his doctor to avoid anything besides a diaper across his belly - so he only wears one piece outfits. He will probably need surgery at age 2 according to his doctor. sheila July 2nd, 2004, 11:39 AM Maggie still has a little one at age 2. Its the depression kind, and you really can't notice it unless you feel for it.
I found out when the found hers that all babies are born with them... the muscles have to be herniated in order for things to pass through the umbilical cord.
Cynister July 2nd, 2004, 02:11 PM Help me out here. What is intestinal strangulation?
