View Full Version : Michigan :)
MML051901 December 29th, 2003, 10:41 AM Anyone else here from Michigan?
I am from Southwest Michigan. I live in the Kalamazoo area and work in the Battle Creek area :)
Karly December 30th, 2003, 06:45 PM Yup! Me, too... although I don't consider myself from Michigan, since I lived in Colorado longer than I've lived here.
I live in Portage, MI (Kalamazoo, basically)
Trish December 31st, 2003, 06:39 AM :wavey: Michelle and Karleigh!
I have lived in Michigan all my life. Grew up in Vassar and have lived in Saginaw for about 10 years now.
Jillian January 2nd, 2004, 09:26 AM I've lived in Michigan my whole life as well. I grew up in Farwell (very small town north of mt. pleasant), went to college in kalamazoo and then Lansing, and we now live in Belleville, about 10-15 minutes from ann arbor.
Kris January 7th, 2004, 08:42 PM From MIchigan here as well. I grew up in Brighton and then moved to Maryland after collage for 7 years and now moved back to Traverse City, if yo need any cherries let me know
stass January 7th, 2004, 09:01 PM I'm here in Ann Arbor. :wavey:
gardner101 January 10th, 2004, 02:26 PM :wavey:
Another die hard MI girl here. Lived in SE MI all my life, except for 5 years spent in the UP for college.
earocks January 11th, 2004, 10:23 AM I grew up in Michigan, but now live in Illinois. All of our family is in the Pontiac/Waterford area, and we are looking into moving to the Grand Rapids area in the next few years.
gardner101 January 15th, 2004, 03:31 PM We're for sale on the web...well, not us exactly, our house is! http://baby.ourlittleuniverse.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif: So if you just *happen* to know of someone looking for a home in Howell http://baby.ourlittleuniverse.com/images/smilies/awink.gif ....
Got our MLS #24004102 ( http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1033217212?lnksrc=00045 (http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1033217212?lnksrc=00045) ) and the assistant just came & took pics today. Now all we need is for someone to buy the house!
We got a ton of snow yesterday. Probably a good 8 inches. I love it, but I don't think it's gona help in selling our home. Who wants to go look at houses in this? Keep your fingers crossed gals. We're so hedging our bets that we can sell this place before the one we want is gone. Here's the link to the home we want:
http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/Hom...65&lnksrc=00002 (http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListing.asp?snum=1&frm=byzip&lid=&pgnum=1&ss_aywr=&st=&mls=xmls&mnbed=3&js=on&mnsqft=2000&fid=so&vtsort=&poe=realtor&mnprice=250000&ct=&zp=48843&mxprice=275000&typ=1&exft=inewhome&exft=i2sty&exft=e2cargar&exft=e1acre&mnbath=2%2E5&sid=0227BA411ADDC&snumxlid=1027808965&lnksrc=00002) (http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListing.asp?snum=1&frm=byzip&lid=&pgnum=1&ss_aywr=&st=&mls=xmls&mnbed=3&js=on&mnsqft=2000&fid=so&vtsort=&poe=realtor&mnprice=250000&ct=&zp=48843&mxprice=275000&typ=1&exft=inewhome&exft=i2sty&exft=e2cargar&exft=e1acre&mnbath=2%2E5&sid=0227BA411ADDC&snumxlid=1027808965&lnksrc=00002)
And this the the development that it's in:
http://www.adlerhomes.com/html/com_blossomfarms.html (http://www.adlerhomes.com/html/com_blossomfarms.html)
We sooooo want this home. It's lacking just a couple things that we can live w/o, a 4th bedroom, a 3 car garage (has 2) & ceiling fans in the bedrooms. But it's got everything else that we want and it's in the sub that we really want to move to.
Lynn January 19th, 2004, 11:17 AM I posted on the other site as well, but I too grew up in MI but now live in NY. I'm from the Grand Rapids area and will be visiting next week! YAY! My family laughs at me, but what I miss most about MI is Vernors, Meijer, and the Purple Cow at Meijer for butter pecan ice cream. Just last week my DH was in MI for work and brought back 9 cases of Vernors. Now we have a good stash. Now if only NY had a $.10 bottle return like in MI :)
Karly January 19th, 2004, 11:50 AM  Lynn! Since I'm from Denver (where they don't do can recycling, either) I about got jumped on the first few times I threw away a can here. I just wasn't used to the bottle return!!!
And, I know what you mean about Meijer. I love it!
Best of luck gardner101, on the sale of your house. Ours is for sale too, so I understand your frustration and anticipation.
Carey February 8th, 2004, 12:18 AM I grew up and lived in MI my whole life, up until 4 years ago. (Bay City and Saginaw) I lived in Phoenix and now Louisville, KY. I went to MICHIGAN STATE. LynnMSH is my SPARTAN buddy!!! :)
My parents still live there and my sister is in Taylor so we go home quite a bit. Wish we could move back someday. I would love to live in Okomos or the E. Lansing area again.
MML051901 March 10th, 2004, 01:37 PM So is everyone getting ready for Spring :)
Karly March 10th, 2004, 03:14 PM Oh yea! That 60+ weather last week got me all excited! And then it SNOWED of all crazy things! *sigh*
LisaM March 10th, 2004, 07:50 PM Moved to Michigan from Indianapolis 18 months ago. We live in White Lake which is about 30 minutes from Howell/Brighton area. DH is originally from Whitehall.
Kris: We are going to the Cherry Festival this year. My parents/brother/sis in law, nephews are coming up from Indy and we rented a house and we are so excited. My dad loves Michigan cherries and cant wait to eat them all week
Lisa
MML051901 March 11th, 2004, 08:27 AM I am so ready for Spring :)
Lisa sounds like you guys are going to have a blast. I have never been there but have always wanted to go!
Trish March 11th, 2004, 12:16 PM Bring on Spring!!! I am so ready for all this water to dry up!
Lisa - we used to head up to the Cherry Festival every year and it is so much fun! You all are going to have a blast!!
Bev March 18th, 2004, 10:38 PM :wavey:
Another die hard MI girl here. Lived in SE MI all my life, except for 5 years spent in the UP for college.
Butting in from Windsor, across the bridge from Detroit! What is the UP? I heard this mentioned on a radio station and being a foreigner, I don't know what it means. :) Dh has relatives in Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills and Farmington Hills. What's up with all the hills?
Jillian March 19th, 2004, 09:35 AM Butting in from Windsor, across the bridge from Detroit! What is the UP? I heard this mentioned on a radio station and being a foreigner, I don't know what it means. :) Dh has relatives in Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills and Farmington Hills. What's up with all the hills?
The UP is the Upper Peninsula.
Bev March 19th, 2004, 09:54 AM The UP is the Upper Peninsula. So the thumb part of the mitt?
gardner101 March 22nd, 2004, 04:32 PM Beverly,
No, Michigan (& the way we refer to it is funny).....Michigan is actually 2 separate peninsulas (pieces of land that are surrounded on 3 sides by water). When we say "up north", we mean anything in the lower peninsula that's north of the "thumb area". The UP is used to describe the "upper peninsula", which sits north of the straits of Mackinac. Hope that helps! I'd show you on my handi-dandi hand map, but that's hard to do if you're not in front of me. You'll have to ask DH if he knows how to do it & have him show you!
And I couldn't agree more, I am SO ready for spring to finally get here & stay!
Bev March 22nd, 2004, 09:07 PM Kris, I had to read that a few times, but now I get it. I used to work on a very small peninsula, but I didn't realize the mitt part of the mitt was considered a peninsula too! So it is the mitt part, north of the thumb! Way up by Sault Ste. Marie and such. :) Thanks everyone! Now if you could explain why the accent is SO CRAZY DIFFERENT from a place not 15 minutes away, that would be fantastic!

well let me know we can get together.
Kris March 25th, 2004, 10:43 PM on my handi-dandi hand map,
Hmmm do we watch Blue's Clue's?:):)
gardner101 March 31st, 2004, 08:19 AM No, I take it they say that? I've used that phrase probably since high school if not middle school! Too funny.
Kris April 3rd, 2004, 02:48 PM yep they say it  It is too funny
HeatherT April 3rd, 2004, 03:10 PM I've lived in Michigan all my life, the far southwest corner. I now live in Portage (Kalamazoo) :)
Kris April 25th, 2004, 12:31 PM We are a quiet bunch
*bump*
Trish April 25th, 2004, 04:22 PM It's this crappy rainy weather :( I can't wait for it to get warmer!! I want to start walking and it's hard in all this rain and cold weather.
Kris April 25th, 2004, 04:45 PM I know weather sucks up here as well we got Emma a swing set and she can't even play on it
Kris June 4th, 2004, 01:18 PM Heeeeeellllllllllllloooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trish June 4th, 2004, 01:26 PM Man, this thread is do dead
How's the weather up in TC, Kris? It's supposed to break 70 degrees here today. :yippee:
Kris June 4th, 2004, 01:34 PM I know I thought I would revive this thread.
It is really warm here as well I went out in jeans and a T shirt and was sweatin' It is probably 70-75 here. Suppose to be 85 by next Tuesday :jump: :yippee:
stass June 4th, 2004, 08:07 PM :wavey: Hey there. Not too much going on in MI, eh?
Kris June 4th, 2004, 09:25 PM nah we are all boring
Jillian June 6th, 2004, 08:57 AM nah we are all boring
Really not much going on at all...we really are boring. ;)
Trish June 6th, 2004, 09:09 AM There are a ton of festivals going on in MI this summer. Anyone going to any of the exciting ones? Or any at all?
stass June 6th, 2004, 12:25 PM I will likely hit the art fair. I usually go.
Kris June 6th, 2004, 12:49 PM I will be at the Cherry Festival :)
Trish June 6th, 2004, 02:02 PM Stacey - When is the Art Fair? I went about 5 yrs ago and loved it!
Kris - We used to go to TC for the Cherry Fest every year with a bunch of our friends, but then we all started having kids and we haven't been in about 3 yrs. It was a nice weekend away.
We will hit the Greek Fest here in Saginaw and Bay City has a ton of things going on in the summer, so we usually go there at least once.
Kris June 6th, 2004, 06:21 PM well if you up for it this year the Blues Angels will be opening it I can't wait. It is like the best week of the summer for me except all the trunk slammers that are here.
stass June 6th, 2004, 08:30 PM http://www.a2southu.com/
It is July 21-24. The link above is just one of the fairs happening it is actually 4 different ones.
Trish June 6th, 2004, 09:35 PM Thanks Stacey!
Karly June 6th, 2004, 11:58 PM Kalamazoo had a Greek festival this weekend, but we weren't able to make it since we were moving out of our house. It would have been fun though.
I've only been to the Cherry Festival one time, and I thought it was great fun. We should try to go again this year. When is it?
Jillian June 7th, 2004, 11:11 AM We'll probably go to the art fair at some point and we'll probably go to ren fest this fall.
Lynn June 22nd, 2004, 07:57 PM I was just in MI (in Grand Rapids) at the beginning of June (and I cried alll the way back to NY! ). WHile we were there we went to the Festival of the Arts in GR. When we were younger we would go all the time so it was really cool for me to go again.
I was even in Howell Kris :) It is such a booming area.
Karly June 22nd, 2004, 09:24 PM Me, too. :)
I now live in Portage (Kalamazoo) :)
MML051901 June 23rd, 2004, 09:57 AM HeatherT, I too am from the Portage/Kalamazoo area. I know Karly too!
Karly so did you guys sell your house?
Karly June 23rd, 2004, 05:51 PM YES! We finally did after sixteen LLOONNGG months! We closed June 4. :)
Any plans to subscribe? :)
Kris July 10th, 2004, 02:26 AM Ok lets try this again
Is summer ever going to come? What a shitty week oops sorry for the word but it has been awful especially with the Cherry FEstival I was so looking forward to going with Emma but it is so cold and rainy.......
Trish July 13th, 2004, 02:05 PM Finally, some nice summer weather! Yes, last week was bad, Kris. Some friends of our were in Charlevoix for the week and they only got out on their boat for 2 hrs the whole week! They were not happy. Now, if we only didn't have to deal with these severe thunderstorms they are predicting
Jillian July 14th, 2004, 08:59 AM Last nights storms were LOUD. I think it is now too hot, or at least it was yeasterday. The bank down the road said it was 96 at 7pm!
Karly July 14th, 2004, 05:11 PM I kept hearing the radio announcers come on and talk about the storms, but we didn't get one here. Did everyone make it through okay?
Jillian July 15th, 2004, 04:47 PM So, is anyone doing anything exciting this weekend?
We aren't. We have got to find the time to get to once upon a child and buy my poor little man some clothes...he's been wearing basically nothing but pink/flowered onesies and sleepers for the past 2 weeks. He only has 2 or 3 boys outfits that fit him now, so we save those for when we leave the house...we just haven't had time to go shopping....he hit a growth spurt at almost exactly 3 months, he went to bed wearing a 3-6 month sleeper and that same sleeper no longer fit him the next night, along with the rest of his 3-5 month clothing.
KristenF August 11th, 2004, 03:50 PM you guys think you're boring, there's not even a NJ thread on the first page!
Though I'm a Jersey Girl at heart, I had to stop in and wave :wavey: to my fellow SPARTANS!!! Four years at MSU (90-94), I couldn't have imagined a better college experience. I miss campus soooo much! I know I could never live anywhere else but NJ, but I always wish I could pick up East Lansing and drop in down a little farther east!
Jeni August 11th, 2004, 04:13 PM I'm going to MI this weekend, some Big family reunion we are staying at the grand Rapids east Radisson, then driving to Kalamazoo as my SO used to live there, and wants to visit friends. Any suggestions on things to do? what about the airzoo or whatever? My son is 2.
Kris August 11th, 2004, 04:28 PM Not familiar with Grand Rapids area sorry can't help you much.
KristenF I went to MSU at the same time as you where did you live?
Trish August 11th, 2004, 08:51 PM I didn't go to MSU, but I wish I would have. I did have some good friends who went there, though, so I visited quite a few times :awink:
Kris August 11th, 2004, 08:57 PM Great school IMO :)
How do you like the weather  I almost turned my heat on.
Trish August 11th, 2004, 09:42 PM I'm actually liking the weather, because I'm so ready for fall. I'm sick of my summer clothes :blush1:
Kris August 11th, 2004, 09:54 PM yea it just is so cold and dreary here with the rain
sabrina August 11th, 2004, 10:05 PM I am liking the weather too. Can you say ready to fix pots of soup and stay indoors with a good book and some hot chocolate.

The meijer childrens gardens are supposedly lots of fun, though I've never been there. Other than that, I don't know...I went to WMU, but that was obviously before I had kids...I know where some fun gay bars are. :P
This weather sucks! It was 61 degrees in our house this morning. I seriously considered turning on the heat but dh talked me out of it.
Trish August 12th, 2004, 09:19 AM I almost turned my heat on, too!! It was cold!
Roger August 12th, 2004, 09:59 AM I didn't go to MSU, but I wish I would have. I did have some good friends who went there, though, so I visited quite a few times :awink:
Where
Kris August 12th, 2004, 10:44 AM I am liking the weather too. Can you say ready to fix pots of soup and stay indoors with a good book and some hot chocolate.
Sounds good to me as well but with 2 kids I like to get them outside to run off energy. We have a very small house.
Trish August 12th, 2004, 10:52 AM WhereRoger - do you want to know where I visited, as in where did my friends live?
sabrina August 12th, 2004, 01:42 PM I have two kids too and live in an apartment. Unfortunately for them to run off energy we either have to go to the park or to a mall playplace. needless to say my house gets used as a playground and I even have a tent set up in Emmalee's bedroom for them to play in. I can't be running to the park all day everyday.

Nope that would be hard to go to the park everyday. I can hardly get out of my house at all.
Does Emmalee like the tent? I bought one for Emma and she is scared of it, not sure why though.
Is it a tent that goes over her bed? Or one like you would camp in?
Roger August 12th, 2004, 03:20 PM Roger - do you want to know where I visited, as in where did my friends live?
My whole reply didn't show up - I meant to ask where you went to school (I grew up in Michigan).
Trish August 12th, 2004, 03:49 PM My whole reply didn't show up - I meant to ask where you went to school (I grew up in Michigan).I see...I went to Ferris State and then transferred to Saginaw Valley State University, where I now work :) What about you? Where in MI did you grow up?

I grew up in Troy, a Detroit burb. Then went to Duke for college, and have been out ever since. An ex-girlfried went to Western Michigan, and had a buddy named Trish, so thought you might have been her...

Lynn August 13th, 2004, 11:07 PM you guys think you're boring, there's not even a NJ thread on the first page!

I'm the opposite! Once a MI girl, always a MI girl! I hate living in NY and would gladly drop EL here so I could wander around campus a little bit everyday. There are so many great things to do there with kids! My DH and I visited in June and we walked around campus with our baby and it was SO fun! When I went to MSU I always imagined walking around campus with my DH, dog and baby and I finally got to do it! :)

Although I never attended MSU I did visit quite a few times and I just LOVE that campus! It's just so beautiful with the old building and the landscaping. I hope my kids attend there someday, so I can check it out, more
Kris August 16th, 2004, 11:51 AM Defianately a fun scholl to go to I miss it much.
Kris August 16th, 2004, 11:58 AM :rahrah: another page turned.
KristenF August 16th, 2004, 02:25 PM I would LOVE my kids to go there!
Kris, I lived in Hubbard freshman year, Holden sophomore year (can you say opposite?) on Charles Street junior year (sooooo close) and Snyder senior year (sooooo far...). I always envied those who lived in Shaw
Lynn August 16th, 2004, 08:11 PM It is amazing at how different things are at State when I return there. I graduated a mere 7 years ago (I was an older student obviously!) and the development is just so awesome!
I told DH that no matter what, we have to be back in MI by the time Aaron is in the 12th grade so that we don't have to pay out of state tuition!
Karly August 18th, 2004, 12:52 AM Roger, my aunt and uncle lived near Troy, so I'm familar with the area. I live in Kalamazoo now, so we also know lots of WMU students/alum. :)
Lynn March 30th, 2005, 02:10 PM Hey guys! DH and I just moved back to MI a few weeks ago and can I just say I am *so* happy to be back? There is soooo much more to do here than in the rinky-dink town we lived in in NY!
And - how about a big cheer for both the men's and women's MSU basketball teams going to the Final Four! So awesome!
Trish March 30th, 2005, 03:14 PM Welcome Home Lynn! :) Now, if only you weren't all the way over on the other side of the state! :awink: And, I'm so excited about the MSU b-ball teams!!! Go Spartans!!
stass March 30th, 2005, 06:48 PM Welcome back to MI. I am born and raised in Ann Arbor so I really can't get as excited about MSU as you all. :) But today here in A2 it is finally a nice day and I am back in love with this state. (it was getting hard to love this last grey month) Seems like there are lots of us from MI.:wavey:
Karly April 25th, 2005, 12:29 PM Welcome, Lynn!
Lynn April 25th, 2005, 04:09 PM Thanks guys! But can I just say that I am HATING this weather right now? Last week I wore shorts 3 days in a row and on Sunday I wore my winter coat! :dead:
What's that they say about our state? "If you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes and it'll change?"

Obligatory Michigander Joke
A man dies and goes to Heaven. St. Peter is showing him around. Everything is glorious. There is a music hall with every kind of music to listen to, all played with angelic perfection. The dining hall offers food is beyond compare. And the residences, St. Peter assures him, are comfortable beyond all imagination.
On their way to the residence halls, they turn down a hall where everyone is chained to the wall. St. Peter offers no comment as they they continue down the long passageway. After a few minutes the man asks St. Peter. "If this is Heaven and everything is so wonderful why are these people chained up?"
St Peter answers, "Oh. Those are the Michiganders, If we don't keep them chained up they try to go to their cabins on the weekends."
