DH and I can't agree on the meaning of this phrase...I KNOW he's wrong but I can't seem to explain it so he understands... Please help me.

As seen on a car side mirror...

"Objects in mirror are closer than they appear."

I've always thought it meant that although objects in the mirror appear to be far away, they are closer than they look. Like a car that appears to be 50 feet behind you may actually only be 25 feet behind you.

I'm with Cori, her explanation is exactly how I take it too.

Yes, that is correct. The mirror is curved to give you a wider field of view, but the side effect of the curvature is that it makes everything seem farther away that it really is.

Thank you. I was right. DH thinks it means that things look closer than they really are and I can't make him understand that it's the opposite.

He has a song called "Objects In The Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" which is quite obviously the opposite of what it actually says on most mirrors. Perhaps he is confused by the song!

I agree....the objects are actually physically closer than they appear in the mirror.

It means (to me) that the objects in real life are actually closer to you than they appear to be in the mirror. For example, my mirror may make a car look as though it is 5 feet behind me, but really it may only be 2-3 feet behind me, therefore the object is closer to me than it appears to be through the mirror.
