Just to let you all know, I just got an email, supposedly from Sallie Mae about my student loans, that asked for a SSN. I'm 99% sure they didn't actually send it. We've recently paid off my loans, plus the return email address was a little fishy. So, if you get something from Sallie Mae asking for your SSN, don't reply to it!

I've seen several emails that appeared on the surface to be legit. It turned out that none of them were. Most of them wanted me to goto some website and complete information.
I packaged up the entire emails and sent them to the real company fraud department. In general, a real legitimate company should not contact you and ask for any information that they should already have on file. My basic rule of thumb is to always be suspicious when you are being contacted (email / phone) and being asked for personal information.
If you get an email like the one you described, I would suggest contacting the company fraud department and letting them know about it. If enough people make a complaint they might be able to track down the real villians and put a stop to their shenanagans.
