Gwyneth Paltrow is reported to have named her baby daughter Apple Blythe Alison Martin. One can only hope the poor little thing will be called Alison. I love the name Blythe (which is Gwyneth's mother's name), but I absolutely cannot see Apple as a nice name for a little girl, a big girl, a teenager or a grandmother. It's fruit for crying out loud!

So, what does everyone else think? Anyone with me on the "OH my goodness this had better be a joke" way of thinking? Are there any of you who like the name and think Gwyneth might be on to something? Please, share your opinions!

I voted that I dislike it. It's pretty awful but I can think of worse. (Like Moon Unit  )

Maybe I'm stretching here, but maybe she named her daughter Apple after her old homebase, NYC -- the Big Apple? :dunno: I still think it's an unusual name...

I hate it. I hate when people name their kids weird names to be 'cute' or trendy and I think thats what she did. People dont think about this children when picking their names. If they call her apple then she will be teased even if she is the child of someone famous.

I agree - I don't think people should be named after fruit! My great-grandfather's name was Orange... He went by his middle name instead.

I hate it. I think she's just trying to be trendy. Didn't that baby name book - Beyond Jennifer, Jason, Madison and Montana - say that the *new* thing in baby names is to use the name of everyday objects? Talk about taking advice a little TOO seriously. :disbelief: I guess Apple is a better choice than Kiwi or Kumquat, though...

How goofy! I voted I dislike it.

I also read that she want to raise her child in London because the US is too self centered, but she will continue to make american movies (and get 10 mil per movie) And that isn't self centered! I guess that is a whole other vent. I do like her acting in some movies but that comment just irritated me!

That name just deserves a big, fat ! I voted that I dislike it, and thought she could have done better. For example, just leave the "Apple" off and call the poor child Blythe after her grandmother. Silly!

Or Squash.

Bad, bad name. I always cringe when I hear that Robin Williams named his daughter "Zelda".

I like Mango better. Mango Paltrow. Very hip.

 I guess she could have been Gooseberry, Avocado or Nashi. Apple isn't the worst fruit name by far!

Out of all the other awful celebrity names out there (I'm thinking about Bruce and Demi's children as well as Frank Zappa's) I'd say this little one got off lightly

I don't like it. It doesn't even sound pretty. Apple. It's so...blah.

Hate it - DH's comment was "just another Hollywood freak". I guess if the trend is to name kids after ordinary everyday things we'll soon be meeting Blender Johnson and Bugspray Martin? Give me a break. The only charitable comment I could remotely think of was that maybe it came from the idea of being "the apple of Mommy's eye"??? But even that's reaching....

I was thinking about it. There really aren't many fruits that wouldn't make totally horrific names... Peach, maybe? Cherry? and Apple.

Others, like posted here, would just sound really really dumb.

I went to school with a girl named Cherry.. and her twin sister Sherry.

Apple is so silly and doesn't even sound good, although the rest of her name is nice.

Gwyneth Paltrow is a weirdo. Chalk this up alongside Madonna's "Rocco"...

I voted I dislike it. While I like Apple as a fruit, it is quite versatile and there are tons of colours and flavours, I am not so fond of it as a name for a human being. :)

Maybe it's like on the Dick Van Dyke show when Rob and Laura Petrie named their baby "Rosebud" (but called him Ritchie) because they couldn't make everyone happy. Richard Oliver Samuel Edward Benjamin Ulysses David=Rosebud.

Apple=Amanda Patricia Pauline Laura Elizabeth.

Or not. At least she didn't name her "Delicious Apple" or "Granny Smith Apple".

But that was a TV show and it was Richie's middle name.

I voted hate it. What was she thinking?! I think she deserves a :colfish: for that!!

I wish I had seen this thread earlier...I read about this poor child right after all the magazines came out. I just about rolled my eyes out of my head when I read they named the child Apple. Why couldn't they have chosen ANY other first name, and keep the middle names? The rest of the name is nice; honoring both grandmas is a great idea, and they're decent names. Apple just seems trendy and cutesy--not befitting someone who will have to grow up and live with that name as an adult. Sometimes I don't think parents consider that the cute little baby with the frilly clothes and soft coos will grow up to be an adult who has to make a living and use their name in professional and business settings. :disbelief

FIL is named Rocco. I told DH no way we're using that one! Thankfully, it's already my nephew's middle name. :)

I voted hate it. It's horrible.

I used to babysit some kids the summer before college who called their grandmother/stepgrandmother (depends on which kid you're talking about) Apple, but I am pretty sure that's just a nickname.

I read that with Fiona Apple....Apple is her middle name. :) She was named that because she's from NYC, born and raised.

Maybe Gwyneth and Chris had a sentimental reason for naming her that???

Personally, I don't mind it so much. :) I can think of worse names although Apple (or Kumquat  ) isn't a name *I* would choose.....

Coco? Or Cocoa? That would continue the food theme

I don't really care for Coco, but at least it's a more "real" name. Coco Arquette... or is that Coco Cox-Arquette? Is it actually Coco, or is that a nickname for Courtenay?
