First of all yikes that I've been out of high school for 10 years! :errr:

Anyway, I'm filling out my questionnaire that will be included in a memory book that will be passed out at my 10 year reunion and it asks what my occupation is. Well, since I don’t work I don’t know what to do. Leave it blank. Say stay at home mom, or say that for 3 years I worked as ______________ and now stay home with the kids. I just don’t want it to seem like I didn’t do anything getting out high school. Know what I mean? I mean I worked 6 hard and long years in college and got a degree. Then went on to a job at a company that I really liked. I know that sounds really self-centered. I'm not ashamed of being a SAHM, it's what I wanted to do ever since I became pregnant and I definitely love my boss!
Maybe I should just be a real joker and say Domestic Engineer or Domestic Goddess or Home Field Research Engineer

Of course I really like the joker ones.

So, what would you do?

Honstly, I would list my former occupation as well as my current position as a SAHM. Like you, I'd want people to know that I went to college and had a job before choosing to stay home. Maybe that's silly, but that's what I would do.

My 10 year reunion is coming up too. I haven't filled out that part of the questionnaire yet because I just wasn't sure what to say. Like you I went to college and got a degree and then work 4 years at a job I love...I hate to leave all of that out.

Saying that, what I am going to do is put that I am a stay at home mom and leave it at that...that is my current occupation, which is what my sheet is asking. I am proud and feel privliged to be staying at home with our son and if it comes up at the reunion as I am speaking to someone, I will say I went to X college and got a degree in X and worked at a great job for 4 years.

Hope that helps! By the way, I love the terms Domestic Goddess and Domestic Engineer !

Kaylee, it's funny you should post this, because I just got this email from my grandmother:

A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

"What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just a .....?

"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation... 'housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know...The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (the whole darned family), and already have four credits, (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."

Motherhood.....What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door!

If you're listed on classmates.com you can also put what colleges you went to besides your HS. That's what I"ve done. Besides, I know several women from my HS class that would give their eye-teeth to be where I am right now. :devildanc

Karly: I've read that before a few years ago and thought it was hilarious.

I wound up saying, occupation: IT consultant currently taking time off to raise my children.
