When did you child learn to tie his/her shoes? Im asking because my brother, who is almost 6, doesnt know how to tie his shoes. Its hard to find shoes with zippers or straps so I dont know if hes supposed to know how to tie his shoes.

I think I finally learned when I was about 5 (which was kinda late, most of my friends already knew how to do it, I just couldn't keep hold of the loops! )

I learned just before I started Kdg. My mother was obsessed with the fact that I would not enter Kdg. without knowing how to tie shoes!!

My son was pretty proficient by Dec. of Kdg., which made hime 5.5.

I *JUST* taught my daughter and this is April of Kdg.!!! But, she is a younger Kindergartener so also, only 5.5. Since she hates tie shoes and only wears buckle shoes/slip ons, I forgot  to teach her!!

*Most* kids master it by age 7. But, it also has a LOT to do with small motor coordination.

I taught 3-6 year olds. For the most part, they started learning around 4 years old. Some (but not many) 3 year olds were trying, but mostly the 4 year olds were the ones starting to get it! It's not perfect by any means, but they are learning anyways!

I think we learned with the 2 loops. Is that how most people teach their children? Or do you teach it using the one loop and then the wrap around? Hope you aren't confused there.

Hi,

DS is six and a half and as far as I know he can't tie shoelaces. I have not bothered to teach him, because he and I would both get too frustrated. I have tried once or twice to show him and he gets mad and then I don't want to deal with it, so velcro it is! I tried showing him with the one loop then wraparound method. What is this two loop thing you speak of? Make two loops and knot those?

Harmonie-try Payless Shoe Source if you have one nearby. We've never had a problem finding velcro or zip shoes there. Wal-Mart usually has a few velcro shoes also.

Oh yeah, my mom said I had a problem learning how to tie shoes because I am a lefty and she's a righty and I kept trying to mirror-image what she was doing and failing miserably until she sat facing me, and showed me so I could mirror it easier.

I remember learning to tie, but I don't know how old I was. I learned with the 2 loops, and that's still how I tie them. :blush1:

My stepson learned in kindergarten because it was a class homework assignment. So he was either 5 or 6. He learned the one loop and then the wraparound.

I learned somewhere around pre-school or kindergarten. And I also learned the one-loop wraparound technique.

Both of my kids had that as well, and it was the motivation to learn.

We did one loop and my mom has a song for it (I'm sure others do too).

I must have learned when I was 4 because I started kindergarten a month or so before I turned 5 and you had to know how to tie your shoes, recite your address and recite your telephone number before starting kindergarten.

The homework assignment is a great idea. All kindergarten teachers should do that.

"Loop, swoop and pull" is the saying we used in teaching DD at 5.

I don't remember...but I wanted to put in a plug for the shoes we just got Aidan b/c I am so sick of tying and retying his shoes. He can also put them on by himself. Okay - so yes, that does mean he can also take them off more easily. But it's worth it! I can't wait until I get get them for Colin!

We got some Nikes (like the ones Alyssa posted) like that for Madelynn and they are the best! Although she hasn't been wearing them because DH let her play in the mud and they are brown instead of purple now.

Just curious...what would they do...not let you in if you couldnt do those things?

I learned when I was in kindergarten (sometime around then...age 4). I learned with two loops ("bunny ears" ) and still tie that way

my brother did not learn until he was like 10...but he had a lot of learning disabilities. I learned in Kindergarden. I still remember not being able to go out to recess because I did not know how to tie my shoes and the teacher made me stay in until I learned how to do it....that would never happen now...

So ...those of you who have taught your children..HOW DO YOU TEACH THEM. I myself learned in Preschool. I have a card with the string in it that I myself tied in preschool (age4)..I have it and it says Jayne has successfully learned to tie her shoes..But my son..Who will be 9 this month..refuses to learn. I go over it several times a month but nothing. He gets the first part..I have been trying to teach him the one loop and wrap around method..as that is the one I was taught and the only one I know.

Am I doing something wrong..Is there a song? ANYTHING. He gets so frustrated and I give in and buy him zip up or shoes like Alyssa bought for Aidan just so we can avoid a problem

I really think they would delay you until you were 6. If you didn't know then, I don't know what they'd do. I was only 4, so they could have made me wait until the next year.

I taught Kindergarten for about 3 years and there were many chn who could not tie their laces. It is a matter of LOTS of practise and giving examples. The card with string is exactly what I would use also a chance to have a go at others and their own shoes. It WILL happen...just be patient.

I use to show both methods of tying if I child could not grasp one of them.
