View Full Version : Do you leave the house with appliances running or on?

My dad refuses to leave the house with any sort of appliance running - from the dryer to the dishwasher. I often throw a load of clothes in the dryer, turn on the crockpot and walk out the door.
I know there is risk of fire with the dryer which I can understand. But the dishwasher? (For the record, I just cleaned out the duct work to the dryer and we're fine!) :)

I leave the washer and/or dryer on sometimes. The only time I use the dishwasher is if I'm going to leave the house for a while. It's portable and it's really noisy. I leave the crockpot on all day if I'm using it.

Yes to the washer, dryer, dishwasher (in the old house, don't have one now), fans, ceiling fans, crock pot...
I never leave with the oven or stove on. Ours has an auto start feature where you can have it start automatically I just can't do it.

DH doesnt like to leave the house with things running but we do it. Sometimes we just have to. Im not going to stop the dryer half way if we have to run out of the door. It doesnt bother me.

Washer, dryer, dishwasher, definitely.
I used to be afraid to do the crockpot, but I have a couple times now.
Never the oven though

Your dad sounds like my mom. I think she's had too many dishwashers/washers overflow to be able to leave them!
On the other hand, I would never get any laundry done if I didn't let the machines run while I was out. Also the dishwasher, crockpot, fans...

I leave with the washer/dryer/crockpot on, but if we had a dishwasher I'm not sure I would anymore. At the last house we lived in the dishwasher was running and all of the sudden water just started pouring out of the bottom and flooded the entire kitchen! I can't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been home.

I've had the washer malfunction and it would of flooded our basement if I hadn't been there at the time. But now we have a new one and I have no problem leaving while things are running, except the oven. Something about a gas stove makes me uncomfortable about leaving while it is going.

I don't like to leave the house with anything turned on (DH and I have each had a house burn down, so we're pretty hyper about fire hazards), but I do very occasionally.

I will, but not with the oven on.... the other stuff doesn't bother me, really. :dunno:

 Washer, dryer, computers... I do worry about fire, but if you stop the dryer midcycle (before it reaches the cool-down cycle), then it warns there's a risk of your clothes spontaneously combusting (!), so you can't win. I'd rather leave it going. The computers run 24/7, and as we provide internet access to our friends and family, we can't turn them off.

No; I'll turn off the dishwasher or washing machine before we leave. We've always lived in apts, so I don't want to be held responsible if the appliances, which are sometimes crappy anyway, break and spring a leak into the apt below us.
Everything else I turn off just to save electricity. The only thing (besides the refrigerator :lol2: ) that I would purposefully leave on is a Crock Pot. :awink:

I don't leave anything on when we leave the house except for the refigerator. Right after we were first married we were getting ready to walk out the door for church. I looked back into the house and seen smoke. Dh ran back into the hallway and pulled our dryer back from the wall and flames shot up from behind the dryer!!! We got the fire out but we had to buy a new dryer. I know that if I hadn't noticed the smoke before we left that we would have lost our home. :( From that day on I NEVER leave the house with the dryer running. I don't even like to leave the washer running. I would NEVER leave a crockpot on either. I'm just too paranoid.

Washer, dryer, dishwasher, crockpot, all okay with me.
We'll sometimes leave the computer on if we're just running out for a few minutes, but otherwise turn it off.

We rarely turn our computer off. I know it's not the best idea but that's just what happens.

actually brooke, you can leave it on all the time, it doesn't hurt. i haven't turned off the one in my cube for months  and in our support center they are never off, rebooted occasionally, but literally up and running 24/7.
at home i turn my off to save electricity because i'm goofy like that.
i will leave the house with the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer on. i'm not too worried as they're all fairly new.

we'll leave the house with pretty much anything on...dishwasher, washer, dryer, ceiling fan, fan, air purifier (this never gets turned off), crockpot. I've never left w/ the oven on, though. And we never turn our computers or router off (we provide internet access for our neighbors).

That's good to know. The only time I make sure I turn it off is if we're getting thunderstorms. My parent's house was struck once and it fried all the TVs and the pool filter. We have a good surge protector but I like to be careful, just in case.

We leave everything running except the oven. As for computers, it's actually better for them to leave them on. Booting up all the time puts a lot of stress on them. They have power-saving modes so they really don't use much electricity when you're not using them.

The only thing I don't leave on is the oven. We even leave the TVs on for the dogs and or to deter burglars.

I don't have a problem leving my appliances on. I'll leave anything on, even the oven  We have the kind of oven that you can set to turn on/off. I know it's not the smartest thing to do, but so far we've been lucky and had no problems.

I have left the oven on when I have had to run to the store for a minute.
I also don't have a problem with the dishwasher, washer/dryer, computer or crockpot being left on.

I had been making sure everything was off (except for the crockpot, the washer/dryer, and we go to sleep with the d-washer on) but then we went away for a week and accidentally left the coffee pot on. Nothing happened! So since then, I've become more relaxed about things.

like the majority,, I leave everything but the oven on. It really is a bad habit, but if there was to be a fire, I'd rather the house to burn down while I'm not in it.
