Now that summer is around the corner, I would love to have a clothes line. We have a small yard, so I don't really want one that is stretched across the yard permanently. So, my options seem to be a retractable one or an umbrella one. Does anyone have either kind. Pros? Cons? Doe the umbrella one have to be in the ground permanently, or could I take it down if we had people over?

I don't have one myself, but my mom used to have the umbrella kind. It doesn't have to be mounted in the ground permanently, but my parents found that what worked best was digging a hole in the ground, filling it with cement, then putting a pipe in the hole slightly larger than the base of the "umbrella". (saves from having to jam the thing into the ground yourself every time) Then you can take it down, and just have a flat small circle of cement visible.

But we don't have the umbrella clothesline. It didn't come with the house. :dunno:
I prefer retractible clotheslines. The umbrella ones always seem unstable to me. My mom has one that feels like I'm going to knock it over all the time.

We're going to put up a retractable one.....we'll attach it to the side of the house or the garage (Wherever we decide to put it), and dig a hole for the other end for the pipe, and pour concrete, but make it so we can take the pipe out of the ground if we want to (like what TtownAnne was talking about)
Growing up, we had both, and I think I like the retractable better, since its a lot easier to get out and put away...and it just looks nicer I think

I like the retractable. I'm SO jealous!! Our neighborhood won't allow them so I hang all my clothes over the bathtub to dry. Whenever we move though I'm going to get one.

At our last house, we installed a retractable just like Chris (olcott) posted. I loooooved the smell of sheets dryed on the line! We dont have one now...our yard is way too small.

Oh how I covet a clothesline.... I have a drying rack for my diapers on my back porch but anything bigger just doesn't work. We had an umbrella one when I was a kid and it worked great. I wish we had the space but we got an above ground pool instead last summer.
