sheila September 16th, 2008, 07:54 AM Some questions I've been thinking about
Do you do volunteer work?
Why or why not?
Do you do volunteer work that could be considered "service to your country?"
If so, how does it?
Have you done so in the past?
Will you in the future?
sheila September 16th, 2008, 08:03 AM Do you do volunteer work? I volunteer at both my daughters' schools. I don't do as much as I would like, and I will be adding more next year when both girls are at the same school. Also, while not technically considered volunteering, I give blood a couple times a year (and need to bump that up)
Why or why not? I do it because I was asked. I think the schools are good ones, and giving back is a way for me to help guarantee that it will continue and get better.
Do you do volunteer work that could be considered "service to your country?" I don't think so. I do some charity knitting. I've made some facecloths for homeless vets, some scarves for the Special Oympics and some preemie hads for NICU babies. While the facecloths are not traditional service to the country, I suppose they could be considered that- if you stretch.
If so, how does it? Well, if you stretch the idea of service to the country, I suppose you could say that I am helping to care for the veterans who have fought for their country.
Have you done so in the past? Not really. I had never really considered another way to serve the country other than the military, and I knew that wasn't for me.
Will you in the future? I'd like to. I still don't want to be in the military, but I feel more confident that there is more I can do.
I'm also on the board for my neighborhood, which I guess counts as civic volunteer work.
Jayne September 16th, 2008, 08:04 AM Do you do volunteer work? Yes
Why or why not?
I volunteer at my church for different functions. I am a youth choir director, I sometimes teach sunday school. I do a music skit once a month on sunday mornings (well I will starting next month), I sing in the choir. I also volunteer in the community. I help drive golf carts at the music in the park in the summer with my dad - where ever I can get involved if I have the time.
Do you do volunteer work that could be considered "service to your country?"
I don't know that I do. I do help assemble care packages for men and women over seas. I suppose that could count a bit.
If so, how does it?
Not sure that it does.
Have you done so in the past?
Well I did help with the beautification of Salem project and while that isn't a huge way it was cleaning up our city and that in and of itself helps our country I suppose. I have also done several walks for hunger and for the March of dimes.
Will you in the future?
I enjoy doing volunteer work when I have the time and so if asked or if I see a need that I can help with, I will do it.
marcy September 16th, 2008, 08:17 AM Do you do volunteer work? I used to during college and the years after that. The thing I did most often is Habitat for Humanity work. I didn't volunteer as often as I should have for example I never did something that would be 2 time a week every year. When the kids are older I will involve them in volunteering.
Why or why not? I started doing volunteer stuff b/c of my parents influence. I also like to remind myself "There but for the grace of God, go I". My college was big into volunteer work also.

Have you done so in the past?
Will you in the future? Possibly. I'm always proud of a family friend who - with her 4 sons all grown (she was widowed when she was just barely pregnant with her fourth - as in she didn't know it yet), raised by herself, she started vounteering w/ Peace Corps.
Had I been younger, being part of AmeriCorps would have been a great experience.
ETA: Sheila, donating blood is definately volunteering IMHO. I did that too and will again when I'm no longer pregnant or breastfeeding.
Dennis September 16th, 2008, 09:07 AM Do you do volunteer work? I volunteer at the kids' school when I can. I'm president of the parents group. A few years ago, I volunteered at a local hospital, although that was mainly because I needed it for my PA school applicaiton. I also give blood.
Why or why not? I think it's important to be involved in school. They need the help, and it shows the kids that we think school is very important. I feel very strongly about donating blood.

Will you in the future? When the kids are older, I'd like to find some things we can do as a family. I think it's important for the kids to understand that it's important to contribute to our community.
Sam W September 16th, 2008, 10:14 AM Do you do volunteer work? I volunteer at a local Non-profit called Recycling for Families. They take gently worn, donated housewares and furniture and have a warehouse that they then are able to distribute those items to local impoverished families. I'll be going to El Salvador in November to help with the Fuller Center project there (building houses). I'm on a Board for a local effort to raise money to buy christmas gifts for orphaned/displaced children at the local Baby Fold. It's a fundraiser in form, but we (a group of 6 bartenders/restaurant eemployees) go out and buy and deliver the toys as well as raising the money.
Why or why not? I started doing it because my in-laws are both on the Board there (Recycling for Families) and are heavily involved. I wish I could offer more time, but typically only help when they are in a pinch and need a body. The Baby Fold effort was started as a result of a handful of us wanting to put forth an effort to help some kids, but we lacked schedules that really allowed us to do a lot of volunteering. The Fuller Center build is a result of my in-laws and my wife having gone in June to El Salvador while I stayed home and tended to the kids and such - now I get to go while Maureen stays home.
Do you do volunteer work that could be considered "service to your country?" I try to keep my efforts focused on our local population. Not that I'm opposed to anything past that, but I really enjoy being able to give back to the community. So I guess yes a little bit, but not in a traditional way.
If so, how does it? It's not really service to my Country as it is service to my Community - which is reflectively similar.
Have you done so in the past? Not really.
Will you in the future? Likely yes. I'm sure as Maureen's and my schedule improve with time that we will be doing more volunteering - and it would be very rewarding to give back to the people who I live near that have helped to make my life possible.
Karri September 16th, 2008, 10:42 AM Do you do volunteer work? I volunteer at the kids school. I am VP of the PTA and I also chair some committees and work (volunteer) one morning a week in the school office. I also do some volunteer work with our neighborhood alliance. Um....I think that's all. I used to donate blood, but I can't right now.
Why or why not? I feel strongly about being involved in the kids school. I think having a vested interest makes them more successful and shows them how important school is, and I think the school needs all the volunteers it can to be a successful school. As far as the neighborhood goes...well, I live here, so I have a strong desire to make it better. And I think its very important to donate blood. It's an easy thing to do and it saves lives :)
Do you do volunteer work that could be considered "service to your country?" I can't think of anything...
If so, how does it?
Have you done so in the past? Nope.
Will you in the future? I'd like to. I am not sure what, though. I am not pro-military, and I am not a door-to-door type of person.
Jenn September 16th, 2008, 01:47 PM Do you do volunteer work? I think I may have done some volunteer work when I was active in my church but that was way back in high school. Currently, I do not volunteer.
Why or why not? No real reason other than time but I would like to start volunteering.

Will you in the future? Yes, absolutely! I was listening to the radio this morning and they were talking about globalleadprogram.org. I am extremely interested in getting involved and feel like it's time I gave back.
