View Full Version : Anyone watch Dr. Phil on 3/17?

I did and it ticked me off. I have stewed about it since then. So just a few minutes ago, I sent an e-mail to Dr. Phil. Most likely, he will never see it or know how upset he made me. But, it did feel good to tell "someone" how I felt.

This is what I sent:

This is in regard to the Sexual Slumps episode that aired on 3/17. Specifically, I was enraged at your condescending and nonchalant attitude about infertility. As a woman who was diagnosed with fertility problems and as the sister of 2 women who share that diagnosis, your advice to simply relax and let it happen was extremely irresponsible.

I was blessed to conceive my daughter two years ago on a low dosage of a fertility drug. We are currently trying for another baby and have had five unsuccessful cycles on that same fertility drug. In some ways, the baby making can become clinical. We do have a romantic sex life -- because it is important to us. We would rather not have sex according to a calendar. But according to my doctor, if we were not aware of the best time for baby making, it could take us ten years, if ever, to conceive. Since I am 32, time is simply not a luxury we have.

Before my own struggles even began, my older sister had tried for nearly 10 years to have a baby. She was poked, prodded and injected more times that she can count and there was never a baby. She and her husband have since adopted 5 children.

During my struggles, my younger sister and her husband experienced infertility. They are in the process of adopting 2 children.

Our family has lived through the emotional roller coaster an infertility diagnosis causes -- times three. And for you to suggest that if we simply relaxed, babies would come, is insulting.

Update: Dr. Phil's show called me today and left me a message. They asked me to call them tomorrow to see about sending an e-mail answering a few questions and sending a picture. They said they wanted to talk to me about debating Dr. Phil on tv! OMG! I'll let ya'll know what they say when I call tomorrow!

Was this a repeat? If so I think I saw it when it originally aired. At least I remember one Dr. Phil show where he said something similar. And yes, it p*ssed me off. As someone who had to go through IVF to achieve pregnancy, 'Just Relax' was such a hurtful (and ignorant) thing to hear. Good for you for contacting the show!

Thanks girls! I called yesterday and left a message but I haven't heard back. I'll be letting you know as soon as I hear from them. :) I still can't believe that they called me!

Thanks also for sharing your stories with IF on this and other boards. It really helps bring out the fact that IF is a disease that needs treatment. And that treatment needs to be covered by insurance. I pray that someday there is no such thing as IF.

:rahrah: Go Lissa Go! It amazes me the ignorance people have when it comes to infertility. If I hear one more "maybe it's not meant to be yet" or "just relax", I think my head is going to start spinning around. I am so glad you emailed him! I don't get to watch him because I am still at work when he comes on, but hopefully they will rebroadcast it this summer. If you want any help debating him, just let us know. He needs to be put in his place over this one.

Go Lissa!! I cant believe he would actually say to relax and let it happen! Some people would not become pregnant without, did he not know that? With statements like that I feel like he did not do his homework on the subject before talking about and im sure you werent the only person he pissed off.

I assume to make sure I don't look like a freak or anything that would be more appropriate for the Jerry Springer Show. :)

Lissa, Is there an update??

April 17th, 2004, 06:55 PM
No, not a word. I am assuming that they aren't going to use me. :( Last week they did a story on IF and gave a couple up to 5 attempts at IVF. I think he realized what a mistake he had made on the topic.

But I am really disappointed that they show didn't at least call and say thanks but no thanks.

It's too bad that they didn't follow through. However, it's great that you even got a response! I figured he (and his producers) would be too conceited to admit he made a mistake. I'm just amazed that some people really believe dealing with IF is simply a matter of "relaxing". :bs:

:woo: You go Lissa! People do make a difference. Too bad it wasn't one of the ladies here that he paid for IVF. You should all petition him and say you were emotionally scarred and now need funding because you can't relax! What a nerve he had.

Touche! Well, the show NEVER even called me back/e-mailed or anything. I am very disappointed in their professionalism. :(
