View Full Version : The price of milk????

~Deborah~
April 21st, 2008, 08:55 AM
I am not sure if it is just here or not but I can't believe how much milk has gone up in price!!!

A 4L bag of milk cost me $5.09 the other day:eek:. Just last week the same bag of milk cost me $3.99!!

Any price increases in your area?

It's crazy! At the bodega, it's $3.99, at the supermarket, it's $5.49!! In my mom's neighborhood there is an Italian specialty store that sells a gallon for $2.99 but you have to supply your own bag! I bought 2 gallons there yesterday.

I've never heard of bags of milk?

I haven't bought milk this week so I'll check the next trip to the grocery and note the price. I think we will be seeing an increase in alot of items due to the gas price increase. =(

Fortinos has it for $4.89 and Sobey's is $5.09:eek:.

I  that Shopper's is still selling it for $3.99

Must be a canadian thing.:giggle: It is 3 mini bags of milk inside a bag. You cut of a corner of a mini bag and stick it in a jug.

What sort of shelflife do the unopened bags have? I wonder if they stay fresher than our jugs?

~Deborah~

The milk I bought yesterday has an expiry tag on it that says May 7...but it would never last that long in this house :) We go through ALOT of milk a week.

I've never thought about buying milk at shopper's

I was just at the grocery store yesterday and forgot to buy milk ... now I'm curious on how much it is. I always get it from No Frills.

~Deborah~
April 21st, 2008, 09:32 AM
:dunno: Aimee. No frills always says they won't be undersold on milk right?

I just paid $3.91 a gallon last night!

Hannabanana
April 21st, 2008, 09:37 AM
I think that's one of their "things".

You know, I went into Sobey's on Friday night to just pick up a few things ... I am a regular No Frills shopper because it's a clean store and nearer my house but since we were in the other plaza getting a movie Friday night, I thought that I'd go in and grab some stuff. I was shocked that I paid $5.99/lb for a red pepper @ Sobey's whereas it's $2.99/lb @ No Frills. Same with bagels: $3.97/pk @ Sobey's; $1.89/pk @ No Frills. CRAZY!!!

~Deborah~
April 21st, 2008, 09:40 AM
Yup...Sobey's is for rich people .

They do have great steaks deals at times though :)

Of course driving all over town for the *specials* at different supermarkets kinda defeats the purpose as well :giggle:

Hannabanana
April 21st, 2008, 10:46 AM
Yeah ... I won't drive to different stores for sales unless I plan on being in the area for other things .. not worth wasting the gas to get the deal!

(for steak, we only ever get that at Costco now .. have you tried it? It's fanastic! We buy steak, salmon and chicken breasts from there and I divide and freeze ... much cheaper!)

Bread is really expensive lately - the price of flour has gone way up.

Melissa
April 21st, 2008, 11:54 AM
I think ours is around $2.90 or so here, that's a gallon of 2%. It is more expensive at regular grocery stores though. Milk in bags sound interesting.

I think as the price of gas goes up, it is reflected in the price of everything else. It costs that much more to transport everything.

EVERYTHING has gone up! It can't just be milk and bread (and eggs...which are no longer 98 cents, but $1.98), because my grocery bill was regularily $130ish a year ago, and now it averages $250 and I haven't changed my habits! :disbelief

I think milk is about $3.30ish here. If it goes on sale for $2.50, I stock up on as many as they will allow (usually 2).

Everything has gone way up. I do the same as Karri and stock up on milk and bread when it goes on sale. I will freeze both. I buy as much as they will allow and since hubby passes the same store on the way home from work I have him stop and get as many as he can of each as well. Historically if you watch the ads most everything will be on sale at some point during a three month period. A couple of weeks ago, Kroger was having a great sale on stuff and I had a ton of coupons. My bill before all discounts and coupons was $69. After all discounts and coupons it was $23. I am working on getting our grocery bill as low as I can. I would like to stay below $150 every two weeks. We are actually doing very well and I am only buying what is on sale and sticking to a list.

The bags of milk is so unusual - talk about potential for mess! I have no clue how much I paid for milk this week; it's one of those ncessities so I don't even look because it's not like I'm going to say "oh, that's too expensive to buy". On top of which, we give Caroline organic milk which is about $1 more than regular milk anyway.

My SIL and I just had this exact conversation yesterday! For me, it used to be $80/week for food and now it's $130ish. No change, I make the same old crap that I used to.

Anyway for regular store-brand type of milk, here it's $3.00/gallon this week.

Sabrina, we had that same sale at Kroger (buy 10/$5 off, is that the one?) and I was a shopping freak!

I'd think you'd pour your bag o' milk into a pitcher? :dunno:

I don't thin I could freeze milk. It sounds icky to me.

Anne - wow. Organic milk is only $1 more? That's great!! Here, its like $3 more :faint: Thankfully, all regular milk (the kind I buy) is hormone free, so I don't have to pay extra.

Melissa

Milk can be frozen no problem. I've done it when I bought too much before a vacation. It thaws just fine.

Uggh I hate frozen milk..the way it seperates looks weird to me.. and milk in bags isn't really that bad but I think that it would be better for the enviroment if we went back to jugs( I think bags came around mid 70's here) .. we do make a point of trying to clean the bags when done and recyling but sometimes we don't and toss in the garbage..I know many people who never, ever recycle them, just toss in the garbage.
ETA- Organic milk at Shoppers Drug Mart was $7.99 for 4 ltres last time I checked, last year.. I imagine it's also jumped in price.

~Deborah~
April 21st, 2008, 03:59 PM
The bags are recyclable like Lisa said but they don't always make it there of course. I use a spike jug for my milk...less mess that way.

http://www.canadiandesignresource.ca/officialgallery/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/spike_canadian_design.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cdr_snapshots/173537594/)

There is a spike at the bottom of the jug and you just squish the bag onto to it..then throw the bag in the recycling.

I might go bag to the 4L jugs of milk from Mac's. They give you money off your next purchase when you bring the jug back.

That would be the one Cami. And I had coupons on just about everything and they doubled them. I stocked up on a lot of things as well. Gotta buy when it is cheap.

And the frozen milk thing, once it is thawed I shake it up and it is no longer separated. Mine doesn't usually separate that bad anyway. Plus when it is just done thawing and it is still ice cold it is so good. I like really cold (almost frozen) milk. I usually use it in about a week after it is thawed and I have never had a problem with it spoiling. I wasn't too keen on freezing it at first but I try very hard to only go to the store every two weeks so I have to stock up on stuff and freeze it. Otherwise, I go over on my budget for food.

I don't mind frozen milk, it just takes so long to thaw!

Milk here is about $3.99/gallon (US, of course). but I have seen it higher. I just love it when the stores have the buy 7 gallons, get 1 free but then they raise the price by 20 or 30 cents a gallon during the promo.

Milk is $3.29/gallon here, but I usually can find it on sale for $2.50, with no limit on how many you buy.

Prices have definitely gone up on everything. I've actually had to lower our grocery budget by $50 dollars/week, and that has not been easy with the rising prices. Especially when the things that we go through the most of are milk, eggs and bread!

First let me say this is NOT a Canadian thing it's a f*cked up Ontario thing. I HATE bag milk. I will not buy it. I make a special trip to Mac's to buy it in a jug. It was $4.49 but the price just went up to $4.99. There is a .25c deposit (because they don't recycle them curbside  ) but you get the money back when you return the jug.

Bev

There was a recent article in the Globe and Mail newspaper about how the prices of food have increased substantially in the US but have decreased in Canada. When I have more time I'll see if I can find it.

We use to get them here but they were hard to find. When we were first married we could get them at IGA. We switched to jugs awhile ago though since they were hard to find.

We always had them growing up in Quebec.

Milk is pretty much the same price here, we buy it in 3 litre bottles and I get homebrand (generic brand) and it only costs $3.19 for 3 litres, that works out to be $3.80 (US) a gallon, if you get a named brand it's $5.30 a litre which is $6.50 (US) a gallon.

I am intrigued now with the talk of bags and jugs in Canada, we buy it in a plastic bottle or a carton, how is it bought in the US?

Ours looks like this

3litre bottle

1 litre carton

Our milk comes in cartons and jugs as well Deb. I have to say that I'm a little confused about your math though, you say that your generic milk is $3.19 for 3 litres shouldn't that work out to $4.02/gal? not $2.50?

ETA: 1 Gallon = 3.79 litres.

MrsPeacefrog
April 22nd, 2008, 10:40 PM
actually I went in the reverse, and worked it out as .79gallons equals 3 litres, forgot to add the remaining .21 gallons

but with the conversion it works out to be $3.80 a gallon (USD)

Thanks for picking up on that

Milk at the market is about $3.99 a gallon

I just bought some at BJ's this week for $2.89 Garelick Farms all natural

Bread is almost $3 a loaf. I got two for $3.40 at BJ's.

Eggs....I don't buy eggs! We have two chickens, they lay 2-3 eggs a day! I have so many eggs that I give them away. They are so yummy too!

Have you noticed the price of chocolate?! It has gone way up around here!

MrsPeacefrog

Woah!!!

Shopper's Food Warehouse (a grocery store, not like BJs) had their brand of bread for $0.50 a loaf a couple weeks ago. It's regularly like $1 a loaf I think. Bread is somthing that is still "normal" priced here.

Eggs - I was shocked when I went to buy eggs last week! They used to be like $1.29 a dozen and now they are $2.35 or more!

Food prices are really rising here as well. I've posted this before but the price of milk is about $7.99/gal regular and $4.99/gal on sale. Eggs are about $2.99/doz. Organic milk is $4.99/half gal!

Bev
April 23rd, 2008, 06:06 AM
Our eggs are expensive too Deb. Like $3.79/doz for the smaller ones and up to $4 something for the large/premium ones. Right now our dollar is about .96 USD I believe. Many commuters who work in the US will stop at the duty free store and buy milk, eggs and gasoline. It's roughly .90/l there and it's 1.24/l here.

God how I miss home Darcy. I remember when milk was $1.67 a year ago at Meijer. $2.19 doesn't sound bad when it is closer to $4 a gallon here.

Kareem sometimes uses the Lactaid with his cereal.

I guess I will need to research the price of milk (eventually) with another one on the way. I have at least 18 months though before he will drink whole milk.

I guess $3.37 is not bad. Well, it is compared to what I paid in the Chicago area...but not bad compared to what I can find around here. It's even expensive at Costco. I usually boycott my local Super Walmart, but maybe I will check the price of milk there.

Wow. i haven't paid too much attention to the price of milk, we have been kind of between rice and cow milk.... I think this is enough to make me switch to rice milk completely!

This is OT, but did you guys know that the amount of calcium we as humans actually absorb from cow's milk is so minimal, it doesn't make any sizeable difference (contrary to the popular commercials)? We heard this from our holistic chiropractor and I wasn't sure I believed it, we started doing research and it seems true. Apparently, rice/almond/soy milk is better for human digestive system...

Yup! I'm a convert. I love MB these days - unless I have both kids with me, then it is Stop & Shop all the way b/c they have the car carts.

Stuff has gone up all around, I can't remember specific prices, but I used to rarely go over $75/week on groceries, and last night I bought my usual stuff and it was $111. I have $100/week budgeted, but I've been going over now for a while.
