View Full Version : I have a secret....

So today my mom and I went to Ann Taylor Loft since I told her I had some Bonus cards I wanted to use up (they're kind of like Gymbucks). I told her to just leave what she wanted on hold at the registers and I would pay for them on my way out. I had a bunch of clothes to try on so I didn't want her to wait for me. I got to the register and there were 2 tops for $3.88 each (only my mom can find these things on a sale rack), a scarf, and a little brown purse on clearance for $12.99.
I paid for all except for the purse. When I met up with my mom a little while later to give her her stuff, I told her I didn't get the purse because it had a gash on it. I lied.
She doesn't need a cheap plasticky purse. My mom doesn't know that on her birthday, just 19 days from today, she is getting a big surprise. I talked my siblings into getting my mom something totally spectacular this year. My sister and I got this business taken care of in Paris a couple of weeks ago. The box was too big so my sister is going to mail it to me. I had to handcarry the item since I didn't want to check it in. Had to hide it from my mom since she traveled with us.
I'm just so excited. This is totally going to blow her away....

Ok, I know approximately 2 things about designer purses.. jack & shit. But seriously, I'm assuming that's something special and expensive like Prada? If so, I'm sure she'll be thrilled. :)

It's a Louis Vuitton. I don't know that much about designer purses either and I wouldn't know if something was a Prada unless it has a tag that says it is.
My mom has always had a thing for LV bags for as long as I can remember. She even had some fake ones custom made in the Philippines right before we moved to the US in 1985 (now you would totally get arrested for that!). It's sad that she has held on to those fake bags for 20+ years.
This was about $1200. Good gawd, right? But hell, she's turning 66 and totally deserving of one tiny dream come true. :)

That's a Louis Vuitton handbag and is something crazy like $1200 or something like that.
Lyndee, your Mom is gonna love it! Will she use it or put it away in a special place? My Grandma did that with everything nice she would get b/c she didn't want to lose it or damage it :giggle:

I'm hoping she uses it right away. She's going on vacation to see her sister and her friends in Georgia next month so it'll be a perfect time to show it off. (actually, she's just keeping up since all her friends already have a LV bag)
I think it's not about the actual bag though- I hope that her friends appreciate that her kids got together to give her this bag.
I just remembered that this isn't the most expensive thing we've bought her. My sister and I bought her a car a while back- but she *needed* a car. She totally doesn't "need" this!

Wow Lyndee! That's a great gift!! I'm sure she'll be thrilled. Here in CA they're soo soo common, it's funny to hear Mandi say that she didn't know what brand it was.;) I've had a LV, but got a GREAT deal on it!! Very nice though...

:woa: $1200 My mom would KILL me if I spent that kind of money on a purse for her.
Make sure you have a camera ready for your mom's facial reaction :)

Yeah, that's pretty neat  It is different when is something that you need but this is something for her, Moms need that every once in awhile  I think is really cool that y'all could do that for her :aok:

It's entirely possible they are very popular here. But I wouldn't know b/c I couldn't give a rats ass about designer stuff. I do know the brand, but I never really pay any attention to the look/logo, kwim?
Anyway, back to Lyndee's post. I'm sure you're mom will love showing it off to her girlfriends. :)
(btw, ITA with Deborah.. my Mom would have a heart attack if I spent that on a purse. )

Wow, Lyndee!! That's awesome!! I'm sure you mom will love it and be so appreciative of the thought you've put into it. I hope your mom's not like mine - we got her a Coach wristlet for Christmas and she told me to return it - she said it was too much to spend ($100) on something she'll hardly use. I was so mad I told her no way, that we wanted her to have it. I've even borrowed it once.

Thanks all! I'll have to video it when she opens the gift. It's only my brother and I who are local. The rest of my siblings (there are 5 of us will just have to see it via email)

I checked the tag. The regular price was $49. But really though, my mom is a gorgeous woman and wears clothes really well. She has great style but hasn't been able to afford much in her life. Sometimes I see a great top on her and she'll tell me she got it at Penney's for $1.99. I guess it must be in the way you carry it.
I would feel funny carrying a LV myself to tell you the truth. I get dressed and wear a suit everyday but a bag of that magnitude is something I don't deserve. I am in a good point in my life but I just don't think I've "arrived" to where I can splurge on something like that for myself- plus, the thought of having to upgrade the rest of myself to "match" my purse- as Deb said, you can't be wearing cheap clothes with a pricey handbag!
I have just in the last few years started buying Coach and D&B and I think it does make look more distinguished (or at least a step up from all the other 16-year olds around here who carry designer purses  )

THAT is the biggest load of bull crap I've ever heard.
Every single one of us deserve nice things and if we choose to splurge on a purse or a vacation, it doesn't matter. WE DESERVE NICE THINGS!!

OMG, this is something I see all the time and it cracks me up. We have a woman in our office that has everything in Louis Vuitton - but her clothing! EEK! I always wondered why she didn't spend more money on her clothes, rather than the purse - her clothes are noticeably of a different caliber than her handbag.
That is a SUPER nice gift!!!! I have visions of a Louis Vuitton.... but the pricetag always intimidates me.
And you are TOTALLY worth this type of bag, Lyndee!!!!

That is something that is really funny, especially around here! It seems to have even gotten to a point that you don't look twice when someone is carrying a LV bag, because most of the time they're not real! Here you can go to the fashion district in LA and get a knockoff (that looks EXACTLY like the real ones) for $35-60, so lots of time people have this great looking 'high end' bag and look like they've had the same clothes for years, and have forgotten to wash them;)!! haha!!! I will say though, the knockoffs that you can get in LA look exactly the same and I've even been fooled by a few!
