View Full Version : New sick time policy vent...
Brooke March 24th, 2004, 07:04 PM My company has decided that people are abusing the sick time...
We accrue 80 hrs of sick time per year. They have decided that we should only be using 40 hrs a year and saving the rest in case we need short term disability.
So....we are no longer allowed to use our sick time to care for a sick child or spouse.
Of course...they are all men with SAHM/SAHW who can take their kids to the drs for them. So this doesn't affect 75% of the company.
The women in the company (mostly admin and accounting people - total of about 10-15 women) were really upset....
Jenn March 24th, 2004, 07:20 PM That is absolutely insane! What do they expect you to use, your vacation time or would it be leave without pay? That's just ridiculous!

I guess we have to use vacation. They don't like to let us use leave without pay unless it's an emergency. I guess we're supposed to come in early and stay late to make up the time.
Dennis March 24th, 2004, 11:01 PM So are you required to get doctor's notes if you're sick?

No, there wasn't any mention of that. They just expect you to not use more than 40 hrs of your sick time in a year.
I forgot to add that sick time use will now be considered in our yearly performance review.
Nadine March 25th, 2004, 08:50 AM OMG!! That is so nasty!
Connie1222 March 25th, 2004, 09:52 AM That sucks Brooke! We only get 5 sick days a year at my company and I save them for when Jack is sick.
kim March 25th, 2004, 10:06 AM brooke, from what i've read you work at a seriously crappy company! have you looked around at all to try and get a job somewhere a bit less anal about time off?
sick time use in your review? now that is bullsh*t!
Barb March 25th, 2004, 11:57 AM I was going to ask the same thing as Kim. Your company sucks! I don't know how you've lasted there as long as you have. :hug99:

Yes, it sucks...but unless I want to commute an hour each way, there really isn't anywhere else to go to do what I'm doing. I need a new career, but changing careers terrifies me.

ITA! :tantrum: I don't give a fig whether my employees use sick time for themselves, a child, or even "mental health days". As far as I'm concerned, as long as they're getting the job done and not taking more days than they actually have (i.e. driving it negative), I could not care less.
Melissa March 29th, 2004, 03:46 PM I mentioned this is the other thread you started but what I would recommend is every year apply for FMLA time. This will give you up to 12 weeks of time that you can use in any increment (as in an hour one day, three hours another day, or a whole day, or a whole week) to help your family through an illness. They don't have to pay you, but you can at least call in and say, I'm taking an FMLA day.
bunkie68 March 30th, 2004, 11:47 AM Oh, Brooke, that sucks. :grr: :wtf: I think your company and mine must be run by the same people, or at least our leave policies must be set up by people with the same philosophies. Our sick time is also used in our annual review - if we exceed the four sick events/total seven days per year, we have an "unsatisfactory" attendance record. Sheesh.
I know changing jobs is hard, and scary, and I know from personal experience that a long commute reeks. But it might be worth it for you to get to someplace that's a little more family-friendly. :hug1:
