What magazines do you subscribe to? Do you read them all, or do they clutter up the coffee table until you recycle/throw them away?

gulp!
April 2nd, 2008, 09:27 AM
I'm migrating off the parenting magazines and am trying out a bunch of "home" magazines, so I'm a little oversubscribed right now. :heee: My current list:
Family Fun
Better Homes & Gardens
Cooking Light
House Beautiful (will cancel at end of sub)
Domino (still deciding on this one)
Real Simple (just subbed after buying on newstand a few times)

I work my way through all of them by the end of the month, usually- I read them on the train back and forth to work.

DH also subsribes to:
Entertainment Weekly
Esquire
Outside (which has been sending us a few versions of new spinoff mags lately)

His usually linger around the house until I get fed up and recycle them.

I don't subscribe to any right now.

Last year, I got Real Simple & Cooking Light. I read Real Simple every month and skimmed Cooking Light.

Shel
April 2nd, 2008, 09:45 AM
We get Family Fun, only because we did sub to Disney Adventure and they stopped publishing and moved the remainder of our sub to Family Fun.

I get Creating Keepsakes because my mom got me a gift subscription.

Michele

The only one we get is Boston Magazine, which Scott's Dad gets us for Christmas every year.

I usually just skim it. All my reading time is taken up by school books these days.

I get Parents and Parenting. One of them I got as a free sub for one year from our daycare center. I also get Working Mother and Cooking Light. I do eventually read them but it takes awhile.

Family Fun (new sub, not sure if I'll keep it)
Real Simple
Readers Digest
Pittsburgh Magazine

They pile up and I am trying to go through them to get them down to a managable level.

DH has a computer magazine and a gaming magazine. He's good at getting rid of them.

Todays Parent
Canadian Parent
Parents
People

Jay:

Sesame Street (comes with Parenting magazine)

Cami
April 2nd, 2008, 10:10 AM
I think my Parenting sub ends next month and that'll be it for me with the parent mags. :(

Others:
Traditional Home
Southern Living
Better Homes and Gardens
Every Day with Rachel Ray (is that the name?)
Family Fun

The girls get a girly mag called "Sparkle" or something and B gets a Thomas magazine. And NickJr magazine for all of them.

I read them pretty soon after I get them and I never get rid of them. I have an issue with this and can't bring myself to do it. I always think I'll do SOMETHING with them.

Shanna
April 2nd, 2008, 10:35 AM
Cami, I have the same problem :giggle:

I get an amazing amount of magazines - and I don't think I've had to pay for maybe one :giggle: I recently sub'd to Simple Scrapbooks, though, which was actually a paid subscription ... I guess we got on some "list" years ago because this has happened for a while, the magazines we get tend to change, though. We've gotten Newsweek for about 7-8 years though because the sub is still in my maiden name :dunno:
Currently, we receive:
American Cheerleader (the twins LOVE this one :dunno: )
The Country's Best Log Homes
Newsweek
PC Magazine
4-Wheel & Off Roader
Pink
Inside Counsel
Nursing Made Incredibly Easy
Newsweek
BH & G
Kraft Food & Family
eWeek
1 To 1
Tango

I usually take them to the kids' schools for art projects and keep some at the house for the kids to cut up and some of them I keep. I keep ALL of my scrapbooking mags, though :blush1:

I read them pretty soon after I get them and I never get rid of them. I have an issue with this and can't bring myself to do it. I always think I'll do SOMETHING with them.

I have Cooking Light issues dating back to 2002. I keep meaning to go through them and tearing out recipes I want to keep.... but I never do it.

The rest I recycle on a regular basis.

Darcy
April 2nd, 2008, 10:54 AM
We subscribe to:
People
Kraft Food & Family
Cigar Afficianado
Maxim
Playboy

Can you tell who gets what?

I've gotten better about getting rid of the magazines. My parents get the People magazines once I'm done reading them and completing the crossword. We've been keeping the Kraft magazines lying around for food inspriation sometimes. The rest we recycle.

I just need to find time to read though the magazines. Most of the time I haven't finished the People before the next issue comes.

Melissa
April 2nd, 2008, 11:05 AM
I had to scroll back up on the mention of playboy! :giggle:

Reader's Digest
Taste of Home
Better Homes and Gardens

LISA
April 2nd, 2008, 11:49 AM
I don't sub to any but I do get a few that are product/store sponsored eg: Kraft, Shoppers Drug Mart etc.. they sometimes end up sitting in the mag rack for months before I read them..

Me:

Parents & Parenting (one was a free sub from years ago, I guess it never expires!)
Newsweek

Keith:

Military History
World War II
Esquire

Jack:

Ranger Rick

I try & read my magazines quickly & throw them out. If there's something interesting I want to keep, I rip it out. Keith takes forever to read his, they are always lingering around, mostly in the bathroom.

Right now I get Canadian Family and Reader's Digest. I don't want Reader's Digest but my Dad got a gift sub for me and keeps renewing it and I don't know how to tell him we don't really want it.

Until last month I was getting Parents and Style at Home (another gift sub) but I didn't renew them.

DH doesn't get any magazines.

AmyP
April 2nd, 2008, 12:59 PM
I used to get Parenting, but I don't anymore. Sarah used to get Babybug, but she doesn't anymore. DH gets Hustler and Barely Legal. :giggle:

Karly
April 2nd, 2008, 01:08 PM
I get Good Housekeeping. I read it, and then usually toss it.

Josh gets a bunch of gaming/pc/hardware magazines. He hardly looks at any of them so most of those get tossed, too.

Oh, and Eva, you can send your Reader's Digest to me - I love it and don't get it currently! :heee:

Me:
Parenting
Today's Parent
Canadian Parent
Reader's Digest (a gift sub from my Grama every year)
Cookie (I'm not renewing this one)

Brad:
Ontario Outdoors
NorthAmerican Hunting/Fishing (or something)

the boys:
Chirp (they got a sub from my IL's for Xmas)
Sesame Street (comes free with my parenting mag)

As for what happens to them, after about a month or two I take out anything I want to keep & they all end up in the blue bin except the RD...for some reason I can't bring myself to throw them out. I think I keep them (in a box in the hall closet) b/c my Grama keeps them for "the kids" when they come over :)

Bonnie
April 2nd, 2008, 01:22 PM
I get one of the Parenting magazines b/c I got a free sub. with something... my mom also bought me a sub to Reader's Digest, so we get that. No more subs. Sometimes I'll buy something on the newstand.

As soon as I read it, it goes into the recycling.

Me:
Simple Scrapbooks (read cover to cover, and tear out what I like)

Today's Parent (read most of it most of the time.)
Chatelaine (I get it $1 per issue, and I figure I get $1 of enjoyment out of it)

Eric:
Sound & Vision (from Anna's school campaign.)

I can NOT wait until my Parenting subscription is up! I can't stand that magazine and I got it free from a points card 3 years ago. they won't let me cancel.

I get:
Real Simple
Cooking Light
Everyday Food
Parenting
Women's Health

Keith gets
Men's Health (though I read it too  )

Aaron gets:
Your Big Backyard
High Five

I've been really good lately about tearing things out of mags that I want to keep and then recycling. I hate the piles. nono:

I also love the Kraft Food and Family
Womans Day
Good Housekeeping
All You
Soap Opera Digest
Family Fun
Taste of Home

I also buy the entertainment ones weekly
People
In Touch

I am only subscribed to the Kraft mag.

milliez
April 2nd, 2008, 01:59 PM
I get Taste of Home and Matt gets Sport Aviation. That's it. I usually keep my Taste of Home mags for a year, then I pick out all of the recipes I like and tear them out, then toss the rest. Matt never reads his Sport Aviation magazines and they sit in the plastic until I toss them out, then he yells at me for throwing them away.

We don't get many right now. My Parenting just ran out and I didn't bother to renew it. DH's Guitar (something or other) just ran out as well and we won't renew it.

We only get:
Real Simple
Cookie (this is the last month and I won't renew)
Kraft

I need to get a sub for something like Southern Living or BH & G... just not sure what I want yet!

fwiw, I get both of these and like BH&G better. It seems to have more and it's more "real." And I don't think I've ever liked any Southern Living recipe that I've tried.

Really? Barely Legal? Aren't you worried your kids will find it? (now or later?)

Karri
April 2nd, 2008, 02:54 PM
I get:
Scrapbooks Etc
Domino (free - some kind of reward from Amazon)
Family Fun
And I am waiting on a sub to Milwaukee Magazine to start

I don't have a sub to People, but I have an agreement w/ my friend who passes hers to me weekly. I am quite grateful for this :)

No one else in the family gets magazines :heee:

Really? Barely Legal? Aren't you worried your kids will find it? (now or later?)

A little, but that's WAY down the road right now. Sarah wouldn't know the difference if she did find it at this point.

I'm not thrilled that he gets that magazine, but I let it go. Once the kids are older, I will probably ask him to drop the subscriptions of those magazines. I'm sure at some point they will wonder what the magazines in black plastic wrap are. And there is no way I'd let him show them if they were under 18 (not sure I'd want him to show them if they were over 18 either!

I have a magazine addiction.

I subscribe to...

Cookie
Kiwi
Parents
Parenting
wondertimes
family fun
O (I got this one for free, I'm not a big fan and will not be renewing)
Hallmark (also got for free, it's better but I still won't renew)

I buy every month...

Racheal Raye
Real Simple

I sometimes buy

Brain.Child
Mothering
Nickelodian family whatever it's called

DH gets

SEED
Popular Science
Rolling Stone
Spin
Blender

Ya know, I was ok with my husband getting playboy, I'd even be fine with him getting it again, but I'm not sure about barely legal...of course, Janelle is old enough to see it and question it, so I'm sure that is a big part of it...I would of been ok before she was old enough to sort of get it.

 I would discourage DH having playboy in the house, but I wouldn't tolerate that one :dunno: My kids are at the age that they would question it as well, not to mention the "there's a book of boobs on the coffee table at my house" that would, with my luck, come out in Sunday School :giggle:

AmyP

DH's magazines of that nature (forgot to mention he also gets Road & Track, which of course I don't mind anyone seeing) are kept in a closet and way out of Sarah's reach. It's not like we let her see them or anything.

I don't really see the big deal, seeing as the magazine arrives in black plastic wrap (you can't see what it is at all until you unwrap it) and it's never removed from the plastic wrap anywhere near Sarah. Once the kids are older and could possibly find the magazines, then I am asking DH to stop the subscription.

I've never understood the whole black plastic thing either; not because of the porn mags, but because our stock prospectuses (prospecti?) and proxy vote information comes in black plastic too! If there's anything erotic about Johnson & Johnson or Opera software that they're worried about, more power to 'em. :giggle:

As to our magazines, we get more than is possibly sensible. DH loves getting mail so he'll subscribe to practically anything.

I get:
Woman's Day
Family Fun
Simple Scrapbooks
Memory Makers
Rachael Ray

Caroline gets:
American Girl
Our Big Backyard (I think it's called)

DH gets:
Reader's Digest
National Geographic
Time
Newsweek
US News
Consumer Reports
Cigar magazine
Guns & Ammo
and a few accounting-related ones

I only subscribe to Who (which is our version of People). I'm really slow at reading them though and am normally a few weeks behind. Right now I'm in between books, so I'm not starting my new one until I'm caught up on my magazines. When I'm finished I put them in the recycling. I used to pass them on to a friend, but don't anymore cause she is a pennypincher (and subsequently has a lot more money then I do!) and is always trying to get things for free. So I got sick of paying for her magazines so now I toss them before she sees them :giggle:

With the mags I used to get, when I was done with them I would bring them to work or laundramat so people have something to do on break/waiting for laundry.

I don't subscribe to many magazines at all.
I bought a sub to Cookie but I'm so over that magazine but I've been too lazy to cancel it.

I somehow got a sub to Family Travel+Leisure. I really like that pub. I used to sub to Budget Travel but I let that run out.

I really should get a sub to Real Simple since that's what I normally buy at the grocery store.

I get:
Vanity Fair
Parents (another one letting the subscription lapse -- I feel like they recycle topics way too frequently)
Better Homes & Gardens
Palm Beach Illustrated
Naples Illustrated
Tampa Bay Illustrated

Kids get:
Highlights
Click

Scott gets:
Nothing at the moment -- he subscribed to some computer thing (Maxium PC?) for years, but I haven't seen it around in ages.

I generally read them all cover to cover and then recycle them. VF is a challenge to get through if I'm also reading a book at the same time, but my policy is to chuck them when the new issue arrives because I know I'll never go back and look at them.

As for the "Illustrateds" -- that's the company worked for pre-kids. I read PBI cover to cover, and immediately recycle the other two. All three come to me for free.

I can barely get through the scags of catalogs that come to my house! I'm so glad DH doesn't even think of subbing to magazines (although he has an online sub to Consumer reports- which is totally fine since there's no clutter there).

I have a question-- What is "Barely Legal"?

I'm on a work laptop and I don't think I want to google that!

I only have one subscription right now (Reader's Digest) but I want to subscribe to Family Fun... I get People magazine every once in awhile at the store.

My FIL has like 15-20 magazines subscriptions, I couldn't even begin to look at the cover page of that many magazines in a year, let alone a month!!

We don't have any subs at the moment, we just finished up on our better homes and gardens sub which we got for free by our mobile company for being loyal customers.

I used to sub to WHO but just haven't had time to really read it so I gave up on it.
