What if you were a hairdresser..and your sister inlaw wanted you to cut her hair,as well as her kids.. would you charge her? if so how much?

Nope, wouldn't charge.

I guess maybe it depends how big the family is and how many people wanted free haircuts. But no, I wouldn't charge for a cut. Something like colouring and stuff, I imagine I would charge for the cost of the supplies.

Depends. How often is she going to request you to cut their hair? Is this a one time thing? If not then I would charge them. Maybe not full rate but you don't work for free. I have a friend who is an accountant and she does our taxes for us. Every year she tells us not to pay her but I don't feel right taking up her family time and she not get something for it. We usually pay her and treat her and her husband to dinner.

I agree with the cost of supplies -- I would charge for that.
I think that if I were to go to my sister in law and ask her to do my hair, if I don't offer money, I'd offer/do something else like bring flowers or a bottle of her favourite wine as a thankyou token.

I'm with Melissa - if it's a regular thing for 5 people, I'd give her a hefty discount....but I'd charge something. If it's a one-time thing (or an occasional thing), then I probably wouldn't charge.
In that situation, if I were the one asking for the haircuts, I'd do what Aimee suggested and bring her a gift (something bought or a gc for dinner or something). Giving out haircuts for a whole family takes a lot of time away from regular business, KWIM?

I ask because my BIL's girlfriend is a hairdresser ( she's not my sil just yet  ) anyway, she has offered to cut our hair ( and colour) and she said she wouldn't charge us..she has already cut P's hair once, actually it was more to fix the mistake the last hairdresser made..
anyway, I want to offer her something, I just don't know how much.. eventually I might get her to do streaks in my hair, I'll most deff have her charge me for that, I won't take no for an answer.. her and my bil are in no position to be giving services away..they barely have a pot to *iss in ..

If she has offered to do it for free, I would probably buy her a gc to her fav store or restaurant.
I think it is different when someone offers to do something versus you asking her to do it...
And if you like her work, and want to continue to use her, I would probably insist on offering something in the way of $$. If she continued to refuse the $$, I would continue to give gc I know they could use (like Costco or Target or Home Depot, etc).

Considering that she offered, I wouldn't pay her, but do something nice for her that she wouldn't normally do herself.

How lucky to have a hairdresser in the family though, Lisa. I often wish I did...Not for the discounts, but for the relationship. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable being very specific about how I want my hair cut, relaxed, and what condition I want. I feel like I am being BOSSY. But if it was someone I was close to, I would feel more comfortable calling the shots.

Well since she is the one who offered then I wouldn't worry about it but like Kika said get her a little something or slip her some $$ every once in a while. Although knowing how I am I would insist on giving her a little something even if it were $10 or $20. :dunno:

See, I see it as the other way around, I don't have a relationship with this chick other than seeing her a few times at the inlaws..we're not close ( she is with my other sil) if I do let her cut my hair I don't know if I could tell her how I would want it as clearly as I would with a stranger :dunno: Cass wants her hair cut while she's home this weekend so I don't know..I might just take her up on the offer if she does end up cutting all 3 of our hair then I'll give her a $25 gift card :dunno:

Lisa, until I stopped working I was a hairstylist. I still cut almost all of my families hair from home now though. I'd definetly give her some $$ /gc, something. I've learned from past mistakes. I remember offering 'free' services to so many family and friends and then eventually realizing that I realshould be getting paid something, because it was ending up taking up my time. That being said, the only time I ever 'tell' someone or 'ask' someone for payment is when it's a friend, not family. But.. my family always pays me. When it's my dad, sister, mom, MIL etc.. I've insisted them not pay me, but they always slip me a $20 or something anyways. When it comes to cousins, aunts, etc then I'll usually just take like $15 for the haircut and not more. It's been a long time since I've done a haircut though and someone left without offering to pay me... so it is kinda hard to say! (lots of help ha?) lol. When it comes to color or services other than haircuts though, I'd DEFINETLY pay her! I'm glad to hear that you plan too! It can be a lot of work and a lot of time!!...plus, it does cost her for supplies. In the future if she does color your hair, if you want.. let me know exactly what you're having her do and I can help you figure out how much you should give her, since she's offering for free.
So.. I guess if I were you and took Cass for a haircut this weekend, I'd say give her like $15... at least $10. Even if she insists that you don't, slip it in somewhere!!;) Hope that helps some!

Lisa, glad I could help. Despite the fact that I felt like I was rambling! haha
That is sad that they take advantage of her like that!!:(
Oh also, do you know if she's offering for you to come in while she's actually 'at work' or on an off day? Either way, I'd try to se her when she's working, but not busy... that way she's not having to 'work' on her day off! I used to ha when people would say.. 'oh today is your day off? Can you cut my hair?' ...umm, no, it's my day OFF!! haha!! Of course, she might not be able to do it at the salon while she's working, I obviously don't know about her salon or anything haha!

We have a different, yet similar situation. Matt's high school friend married a photographer. She's been taking our kids pictures for the past 4 years and never charges us. So, we just get her a gift certificate. It seems too weird to exchange money for services between friends, but the gift card seems to be okay.:awink:

haha.. funny you mention that Melissa. I used to have a customer (when I was working) that did photography, so we'd swap... a haircut and color and a couple of products for ALL of the pictures we wanted (she worked at picture people). It worked great!! Sadly enough, she quit after Brookelyn turned 3 :(.

Wow, that was a very nice exchange!! What a bummer that she quit!

Lisa, that would be more difficult if you two are not close. You are right, it's the same as explaining it to a stranger, but now you have to be extra nice and considerate 'cause it's your brother's gf...and she's offering to do it for free.
That is a totally different situation.
My big sister in NYC does hair. She always offers to do my hair when we are together. And she is so loving and caring when she does it...I love it! (and miss it now that we are in different states).

Just bumping this up..I did end up having her cut mine and Paige's hair here at my house, I had to drive her and bil home so I slipped her a $20 ..ofcourse she told me I didn't have to pay her to which I said just shut up and take it
Alyson, if you see this, I'm thinking of having her dye my hair and put in some all over streaks..how much should I pay her? I'm working up the nerve to ask her how much she will charge me but if she say's nothing I want to be prepared with something.

Lisa.. hi:). Your hair is just past your shoulders right (somewhere around there)? Also, your hair is very dark?.. do you have color in it or is it just natural? How light do you want or not want the streaks (very blonde, carmel color, etc?)?... All of that will determine how much 'work' she has cut out for her. If you can let me know that then I can easily give you a #! :)

Thanks for helping Alyson :)
My hair is just above my shoulders now, choppy long layers and right now it's on the light side 'cause I grabbed the wrong colour of home dye :duh:..it's almost a dark strawberry blond ..so I would want to go back to a dark brown or auburn with caramel or paprika?? streaks..

No problem Lisa! I don't mind at all, keeps me thinking about these things even though I don't work anymore, refreshes my brain haha!
Ok, so she'd probably do one of 2 different things.. either die all of your hair darker and then go back through and highlight it or she'd do both at the same time (which is what I'd do.. way easier) and then if she had to add a bit more color to the highlights if necessary. I'd definetly give her between $50 and $60. It would cost almost double that (at least in my area it would) to have it done at a salon...
Hope that helps!!:)
