Hi all, I went back through the threads and saw where people had posted about their newborns that have this. Cain has one, so I am just curious for a follow up on whether your experience was that they resolved themselves. Also, if you have a picture of what it looked like, and wouldn't mind posting, I would love to see that. This is my first experience w/ one, so I am just trying to get comfortable w/ it. TIA!

Micayla had one. It was a pretty bad one. I noticed it at about her 1 month appointment.
The Dr. said at the time that they don't do surgery until they are at least 2yo and that it often corrects itself. I thought for sure we'd need to have Micayla's operated on just b/c of the sheer enormous size of it. But it gradually got better on it's own. By the time she was 1 or so it was MUCH better. By the time she was 2 it was completely gone. I will say that her belly button looks slightly different than her siblings, but nothing bad. She'll still be able to wear a bikini when she's older. :)
Other than looking bad, it never seemed to bother her at all. I would have her wear a lot of onesies and stuff that didn't go across her abdomin when I could. Of course that's harder in the winter or when you have a boy and can't put him in a dress.
I'll post a pic. It's a really crappy pixelated one, but you get the idea. She was around 3m old at the time IIRC.

Thank you Mandi! I am glad to read that it went away on its own. Cain's doesn't seem to bother him at all, even when I have moved it, squeezed it, etc. It sounds like it is fluid filled, which is totally weird. His is not as wide as Micayla's, but it sticks up so far. Like he has a thumb sticking out of his tummy. Hopefully his will go away on its own as well.

Alex had an umbilical hernia. It wasn't as big as Micayla's, but definitely noticable. We always had to make sure we could push it all the way back in. It was definitely squishy:lol: His dr. told us If it didn't push back into the hole, there was a problem and we had to get him to the ER.
It never went away so we had surgery to fix it in May of last year. The surgery didn't take long at all and he was back on his feet later that day. He was most excited about showing off the large bandage on his tummy to his friends at school:lol: Right now, it doesn't look like an innie..or an outie. It's just kind of flat. I don't know how to describe it, but you'd have to look pretty close to notice it's not "normal". (But really, what does normal look like? )

Jessica still has an umbilical hernia. It's gotten smaller with time but it's still there. They usually don't fix them unless they cause trouble or around age 5.
