I heard through the grapevine that there was a student at Katie's school that had lice. The student wasn't in Katie's classroom and they don't typically share spaces, they eat in their own rooms and don't have many common areas.
The parents weren't notified for Katie's class. Would you have expected a letter from the school that said, "A student in the school has lice, be on the look out?" I'm just surprised we didn't get any type of notification.

Absolutely. It hasn't happened yet, I know Jack's school has periodic lice checks, though. I would totally expect to be notified if any kid in the school had them, not only in Jack's class. I would call the school and ask point blank about it, too.

Our school only notifies you if it is a kid in your child's class - if a fifth grader has lice, they don't notify kindergarteners (likewise with strep, pink eye, etc). I'm not too surprised if they don't have a lot of contact.

I got a letter yesterday from Saxon's school. It says that the child with a case of lice is in his class. So I don't know if anyone else in the other classes got one. :dunno:

I wouldn't expect notification unless it was a child in my kid's class or in a situation where they would come into contact with them (on-side afterschool care program or something.)

At the begining of the year one of the papers that came home said they were changing their policy on lice, cause informing parents lead to witch hunts for which kid had it and such, they also were not sending kids home early if they found lice cause it has not shown to prevent the spread of it... :dunno:

At Riley's school it's if someone in her grade gets something, not just her class, since the grades share playgrounds, bathrooms etc.

We have only received letters if someone in the boys class has lice. Would be nice if it was in the school though..especially if it was the other Kindergarten class on alternate days as they share cubbies.

Thanks everyone! The school where Katie goes each classroom has their own bathroom and the room where the kid had lice doesn't share a playground with Katie's class.

I would hope they do b/c even though first graders don't share the same recess/lunch time/etc than say 3rd or 5th graders, 1st & K have some reading buddies (5th graders) & K have some lunch buddies (3rd graders).

I think notifying the entire school is a bit of overkill. Maybe I'm just thinking about all that paper
They don't send out letters to the whole school when a child gets chicken pox, or has the flu. I don't know, there are so many contagious diseases out there. What exactly would you do with that information?

I've seen all kinds of letters sent home for things like chicken pox (what to look for) and Fifths disease. I think if it is a huge school I can understand not sending something to students who are on the opposite side of the building, etc... But this is a very small school with a daycare attached.

Sometimes we get a letter, sometimes the teacher puts a note up outside the classroom. If it was a child in the same class as mine, then yes I would expect to be notified.

Depends in which school. In Yumi's school I never received any notification. But he is in an all boy class and hardly has any contact with girls. And ... boys just seem much less prone to lice here.
In KG and PS and DC I'd expect to be notified and unfortunately often they don't notify at all. I check the girls' heads for lice at least once a week just to be on the safe side. When I catch lice, I notify the teacher at once.

If you got a notice, what would you do different? I mean, don't you check your child's head and body every time you give them a bath? Also, your child could be in the same class with a child with AIDS or hepatisis. You won't get a notice about that.
For some reason I feel very defensive about this

I don't think it's a witch hunt type of thing Joan, but I would think it's more a type of "if your child complains of a sore throat, be aware that it might be strep because little Timmy came down with it two days ago!"

I absolutely think we should be notified. Both Peyton and Lindsey wound up with Lice back in October and it was seriously the most annoying thing to deal with. I still, to this day, check their head regularly because I'm terrified of getting it again.
I think we actually picked it up from daycare. Our daycare knew they had a problem with one little girl and neglected to notify anyone. By the time we realized that Peyton had it, it was a full blown infestation on her head. I serioulsy nit picked her entire head for 4 hours. Horrible. We were lucky to find Lindsey's early on and it was much easier to get rid of.

Honestly, no, I never checked their heads when I gave them a bath. I mean, I washed their hair, rinsed out the shampoo and then would blow dry and they still wound up with lice. In my experience you really have to check close to the scalp and know what you are looking for. My DH could check their heads and he'd probably miss the signs because he's not entirely sure what the eggs look like.

My children both attend the same preschool, and all parents of children in all classrooms were notified a few weeks ago when a child had lice. The children all play on the playground together and do share bathrooms, so I'm sure that's why everyone was notified.

Yes, at least her last one did. We got a notice that there was a reported case of head lice in her preschool and to check our children's heads for lice. There are a couple different classrooms, and the kids have varying schedules (it was the EI preschool), so that's probably why they notified everyone. Each class has their own bathroom, but they do all share a playground.
