View Full Version : Could this be acid reflux??

Okay, I am beginning to think that Olivia has acid reflux, but I'm not sure. She has her 4 month well visit on 2/4, so I will definitely be asking her pedi at that appointment, but until then.....

Her symptoms:

Constant spitting up. Up until a few weeks ago, and still a couple of times per week, she will spit up constantly all day long. She is better now. For the most part she may only spit up once or twice a day now, but she has some days where it's really bad.

Another "up until a few weeks ago", she would scream sometimes when I'd go to nurse her. I always thought that she had a burp stuck and wouldn't eat because of that, but now I'm wondering if it was reflux.:dunno: It was awful, painful crying. Terrible.

She hasn't gained weight as quickly as my other children. All of the others were 14 pounds and above by 4 months and she is only 13 lbs.

She wakes up anywhere from 5-10 times at night. It's terrible. And during the day, she takes little cat naps and cries when she wakes up.
So, anyone??? Does this sound anything like reflux, or was it reflux and it's getting better?? The lack of sleep and crying are getting worse though. This is my fourth child and she just has me baffled!!

Thanks for any ideas/advice!!

It sounds very much like reflux. Kyle had it. He would scream for hours after each meal and would only sleep from exhaustion. Most of them were cat naps. All of us would only get some sleep if we held him upright while we were in the rocking chair.
Is she arching her back when she nurses?
Kyle was gaining weight just fine as well. So gaining weight does not rule it out.

She was up until 3 or 4 weeks ago. So, that and the constant spitting up are improving, which is good. But 95% of her burps are wet burps, so she is still having stuff come up in her throat, it's just not making it's way out of her mouth as much.

It does sound like reflux. My DD had reflux and was colicky...I was so sure she would have been my only one! LOL She did the whole projectile vomiting, not just a little spitting up, and also gained weight, even though she threw up a lot. She constantly cried and would only sleep in her carrier or bouncy chair. By 9 months though she had outgrown it.

My ped thought maybe my DS had it when he was born, but he was NOTHING like my DD. Once I switched his formula around and found the right bottle to feed him with all his symptoms disappered.

That sounds just like reflux  All 3 of mine had it, but with differing symptoms: Aidan was the archer, the silent reflux, the painful screaming, etc. N&E were the pukers and the archers. Medication really helped. It didn't make it stop alltogether (they still puked all the time, but gained just fine), but it did stop most of the painful reflux that would come up and stay in the mouth or throat and burn the heck out of them.

Thank you ladies. I feel SO awful to think that she could have had this the whole time and I'm just now figuring it out. Ugh. It seems that since Christmas, things have been improving. I just figured she was high maintenance or something.:dunno: You'd think I'd have this figured out by now.:disbelief

Don't feel bad. :hug99: We basically got no sleep for about a month with people telling me it's colick until the ped finally said it must be reflux.
Medication helped Kyle. He took Pepcid AC. Before the medication took effect we gave him Maalox according to ped instructions. That made a difference already.
