hi -

my 9.5 week old has fitful sleeping! he'll be in a deep sleep for the first part of the night, but after that (anywhere from 12:30 til morning), he kicks and squirms and makes noise, like he's desperately trying to break free from his swaddle. i'm so worried b/c i can't imagine it's restful for him. i check on him, but his eyes are closed, so he is sleeping. i think he does it b/c of gas, not the swaddle! we already have him on mylicon.

right now, we have him sleeping in his swing!

any advice?

thank you!!

Grace, I honestly don't have any advice (as Brookelyn, my 4 year old slept through the night since the day she was born- not to rub it in;)), but have you asked the dr about it?

i did......she said sleep issues are temporary, but this has been going on for awhile. i feel like jacob takes big naps during the day to compensate...poor baby!

lucky you!!

Have you tried not swaddling him. Maybe just put his blankets over him. And not having him sleep in the swing. I have a 12 year old who still wakes once a night to get up for a drink or to go to the bathroom. a 6 year old who sleeps through the night and has since she was about 2 weeks old and now my 4.5 week old who is still trying to figure out that night is night and we should sleep then, not all day

I agree w/ Jayne, try to take him out of the swaddle (or swaddle just the bottom half and leave his arms free).

he definitely needs his swaddle! he has astrong moro reflex and he wakes himself up without it.......maybe a move to the crib.....

jacob mixed up day and night too! good luck.....

I was going to say not to swaddle too as Mia only liked it for a short time. She didn't like her arms confined and, to this day, really doesn't like blankets on her. She's always kicking them off. However, I'm like Alyson and pretty much had a "sleep thru the night" kid since birth too.

I think the white noise would be another good option. I started playing some very soft lullabye music and we always have a fan on in the hallway to drown out more sound (a lot of that has to do with drowing out the sound for the dog but that's another story   ).

Also, at about that age is when Mia discovered her thumb.... Does he have a pacifier?

If you think he's gassy, you could try pedalling his legs (like riding a bike), or what was successful with my son was putting his toes up to his nose. Those can sometimes get some toots out. :heee: Also, trying to make sure that he's been burped really well. I know that sometimes during the night, I would be so tired that I would forget to burp them at all.

thanks all! not sure what to do! he definitely need his swaddle or his hands fly in his face and he wakes up!

he's really gassy! it's definitely harder to burp him at night b/c i don't want to wake him too much, but i'll work on that...

One thing that seemed to work for me when I was a baby and also seemed to work for my DD was to lay them on their tummy on my lap so the legs were over one leg and the head was resting on the other leg and then kind of sway gently back and forth and pat them lightly on the back... just a thought. :dunno: I hope I explained that OK...
