View Full Version : When you leave your kid(s) with your husband?

When you leave your kids with your husband, do you need to give him specific instructions as to what needs to be done with the kids? For instance, do you need to tell him what time snacks/lunch/naps typically are, and what they can have for snacks/lunch/dinner? Or can you just say goodbye and walk out the door?

 Sarah! that's me too  nope I don't need to leave specific instructions just remind him NOT to cave and let her "have just one piece of candy/chocolate" cause that one piece turns into 10 a day if she puts it to him that way.. he's such a sucker when it comes to her..he's putty in her hands

I usually will say "she hasn't had her shower yet" or don't forget to check over homework but other then that..I just walk out the door. Dan has no problem with handling things. He just wishes I would leave Charlotte with him but I am not ready

I usually just remind him if Riley *needs* to take a nap or anything like that. But he has a pretty good idea. Although I'm the one who puts Jeremy down for bed, so the few times he's put both kids to bed, I've had to go over the routine with him.

I basically run out the door too! Like Jayne, I might mention.. she does need a bath or something like that, but nothing more. DH is great with Brookelyn.

So there is hope that I won't have to explain everything in detail someday. It annoys me to no end, that if I'm going out, I have to give Eric specific instructions. Yes, I know I do most of the care since I am home with Dylan, but he sees what he gets for snacks/lunch/dinner on the weekends. Figure it out! Ok rant over! :giggle:

I might remind him of some stuff... they'll need dinner, check homework, Eliot(or Ian) lost bedtime snack, etc... but I don't need to give him detailed instructions.

I leave "suggestions" not instructions

It isn't really b/c I don't trust Scott to take care of them, it is just that I like things done a certain way. Right now I'm in grad school and I have class 1 weekend a month, so Scott is on his own Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Sunday. So, I usually give him ideas of what to do, what to feed them etc. He often ignores my suggestions though. :shuffle:

I guess I don't leave as many suggestions if I'm just going out for dinner or whatever, but for whatever reason it is hard for me to relinquish control for the whole weekend - even though I enjoy having the time "off."

He's lucky I even tell him I'm leaving...

If he asks, I'll answer. Like he may ask what he should feed them for lunch or whatever. Or if I am going away for a day or two or three, he may ask what kind of things he can do w/ them. But I don't leave instructions.

I have to gently remind him that the baby needs to take a nap "whether he seems tired, or not". I'm such a control freak, it's hard not to leave written detailed instructions, broken down in quarter hour increments. I've found that's the quickest way to get to do EVERYTHING myself!!

I really don't have to with Rick...he's very attentive around her and can figure out her needs (she's quite vocal about them anyway.) I have had friends that had to treat their husbands like the babysitter and leave detailed instructions!

Now if he would only clean up after her so it doesn't look like a bomb went off when he watches her!

Nope.... Jeremy is very good with Mia. I think our situation is probably closest to how Karri described but he doesn't even ask what he can do with her. He just takes her and they go... where ever! Shopping, running errands, over to grandmas, out to the garage, on a 4-wheeler ride... whatever.

Yes, there is hope. When Mason was 9 months old I left for 45 minutes or so to get groceries. When I came back Mason was crying and Patrick said, "He's not hot, there's nothing poking him, his diaper is clean. I don't know what's wrong." So as I'm schlepping in all the groceries I say, "He's probably hungry, did you feed him? He eats regular food, you know." After two more trips back to the car and the kitchen and I didn't do anything to help him, he finally got up and gave him some applesauce. That solved the problem.

Next time, he managed on his own. :) Sometimes you have to explain the obvious.

You leave them alone long enough, without instructions, and they'll figure it out

My husband is my daycare provider when I go to work, but I still leave a few gentle reminders about non-daily stuff because he'll just skip it (medicine, homework etc)

I think back at Dylan's age, I would leave with "reminders"/"suggestions" but now I just bail. :) Back then, it helped me too if I mentioned what to do because then I'd worry less while I was out.

When Katie was a baby, I'd give him a "status report." She ate X hours ago, had/did not have a nap, etc.... I figured I'd warn him of upcoming "situations." Now, Katie can tell him what she needs and wants.

Ummm...it depends. If it's just for the evening, no. Other than maybe that she needs dinner, but he usually knows that.

The first couple times I left her with him for the weekend, he asked for instructions. I went away a month ago for the weekend and he just asked me to leave a couple outfits and PJs out. I left him a few short notes (like brush her teeth, make sure she wears a hat and mittens when you go out), but that was about it.

I just run out the door too. I might tell him what they have eaten or need to eat (moreso with Christine) but that is about it.
