The kindergarten kids are having a Thanksgiving feast in the fellowship hall at the church where I work. Apparently, one of the mom's had her 18 month old daughter in a backpack carrier, and the little girl reached out and pulled the fire alarm. And no one knew how to turn the alarm off

They ran in and told us it was a false alarm, the office manager called the fire station to tell them it was a false pull while I'm calling the alarm company to shut the alarm off. The custodian comes in and says he tried to shut it off but it wouldn't work, so he takes my cell phone and the alarm guy calls him on my cell phone to walk him through it.

I run down to check on Owen who has major sensitive ears and screams at loud noises (and has an ear infection) only to find out that they had evacuated the rest of the preschool/Parents Day Out hallway because all the kids were crying because of the loud noises so they treated it like a fire drill. As I get outside, wave to Owen who is with his class in the shelter hosue and tell the PDO director what was going on, every fire truck in town shows up. So much for letting them know about the false pull!!!

I run down the parking lot to tell the firefighters we had called dispatch, but they said they had to come anyhow, but had taken their time getting here since it was a false pull. One of the trustees was coming down the road to go home, saw the firetrucks pull in (and about had a heart attack thinking the building was on fire!) and came in to shut off the alarm. That stupid thing had been going off for almost 30 minutes. We all have headaches and ringing ears an hour later and the kids are all traumatized, although they are ALL down in the classrooms talking about getting to see firetrucks!

Shel, that is a wild morning. I bet the kids liked the fire trucks, too.

Your story reminds me of a time when Kareem was three. We lived in a dorm when Kareem was 2 1/2 to 5. Occasionally a colleg kid would stumble home drunk on the weekend, and pull the fire alarm. Since we were resident tutors (grad student living in the undergrad dorm), we always had to assist with each evacuation. We lived on the 6th floor in Cambridge, MA, so it meant bundling up a 1 year old and a 3 year old in the middle of the night, walking down 5 flights of stairs, and waiting in the cold. Kareem always loved the trucks...the firemen would usually let the kids sit in the warm truck while they shut off the alarms.

One day, Kareem wandered away while I was hauling groceries in. He went and pulled the alarm because he wanted "to see the fire trucks come". Of course, it set a chain reaction in motion. I've never been so embarrassed!

were they cute atleast

In the office we were joking that we were going to kiss whoever it was that finally got the alarm shut off, thinking it was one of the 3 firefighters that actually came in the building.

Unfortunately, it was the 60 year old trustee :(
