View Full Version : We need a girl's name!
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 11:49 AM Okay, we're pretty set on Sean Robert if this one is a boy. However, we're having a hard time with girl's names. We're not finding out the sex, so we'll need to have two names ready.
The middle name will be Jennifer or Lynn. We wanted to use a family name from his side and his sister is Jennifer Lynn. So we'd use which ever one of those fits best with the first name.
Our last name starts with a P, so no P names. I'm probably overthinking, but I don't want her picked on for having PP for initials.
Names that are out:
Emily (my niece)
Anna (my niece)
Caytlin (my goddaughter)
Anya (DH's step-niece)
Illyria (DH's step-niece, way too out there for us, and she's named after a character in Angel I'd never name my daughter after)
Jessica (SIL's name and best friend's name)
Kathleen/Katherine/Katie (Jessica's naming for her baby Kathleen if it's a girl)
Christine/Christina (Sarah's godmother is Christine and my cousin is Christina)
Names I like that DH is just lukewarm about:
Allison
Alyssa
Beyond that I'm open to suggestions. I tend to prefer more common names, but I'm open to something less common as long as it's not too "out there."
Jeni October 3rd, 2007, 11:53 AM Hey, I'm Jennifer Lynn too  I'm thinking for you :) even though we have NO clue on any names, well, I do, he doesn't like them
Jayne October 3rd, 2007, 11:53 AM What about Alisa I really like that name but my friends sisters name is that so I didn't use it. It would sound pretty with Lynn
I am not sure how I would use Jennifer as a middle name :dunno:
Alisa Lynn
Alyssa Lynn
Kara Lynn (That is what Kara on here is named  )
Jessica October 3rd, 2007, 11:56 AM Wasn't Carly on your list of potential names for Sarah? (I might be remembering wrong!) I always thought that was pretty and went well with your last name.
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 12:24 PM Yeah it was but DH veto'd it. He hates it.
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 12:24 PM Oh, and I like Kara, but it rhymes with Sarah, so no way.
Jayne October 3rd, 2007, 12:28 PM  Very true..that would be about as bad as my mom nameing us Jayne and Jen. I hated it.
Alyson October 3rd, 2007, 12:45 PM Well Amy, I have to say I'm quite partial to Allison (Alyson, my way;))!
Jayne October 3rd, 2007, 12:52 PM I do like the names
Jayne
Charlotte
Olivia
Kendall
Aubrey
Audrey
Karly October 3rd, 2007, 01:02 PM Well, :tongue2: to him! Yeah it was but DH veto'd it. He hates it.
How about:
Hannah
Rachel
Leah
Elizabeth
Bethany
magoo October 3rd, 2007, 01:17 PM I'm Sarah and my sisters are Heather and Ruth. :)
I love Karly's list!
What is Sarah's middle name?
Alyssa October 3rd, 2007, 01:19 PM Alyssa LynnThe coolest thing about this name is that it has 2As, 2Ls, 2Ys, 2Ss and 2Ns.
Signed,
Someone Who Was Bored in 8th Grade Health Class :awink:
Alyssa October 3rd, 2007, 01:24 PM What about:
Madeline
Melissa (if he hates Alyssa)
Megan
Caroline
Carolyn
Natalie
Darcy
Linsday
Jillian
Molly
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 01:42 PM Well, :tongue2: to him!
Yeah I know.
magoo October 3rd, 2007, 01:46 PM Maggie
Megan
Emily
Sadie
Sophie
Laura
Lauren

Elyse
Eva October 3rd, 2007, 01:49 PM Most of the names I like have already been mentioned. :)
Here are a few more:
Lucy
Laura/ Laurel :) / Lauren
Clara
Claire
Julie/ Julia
Emma :)
Jenna
Maya
ETA: I like Allison. I am shocked that Christine isn't an Allison since we had that name on our list both times.
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 01:52 PM Hannah - too close to Anna, they live close and we see her a lot so that would be a problem
Rachel - was on our list for Sarah, not sure how it sounds with our last name (sort of like Powell)
Leah
Elizabeth - I like this
Bethany - that's pretty too and sounds really nice with Lynn
Madeline - would be okay but there would be NO calling her Maddie, I don't like that nickname
Melissa (if he hates Alyssa)
Megan - was also on our list with Sarah
Caroline
Carolyn
Natalie - hadn't thought about this one, but I like it!
Darcy - not sure how it flows with Sarah
Linsday
Jillian - cousin with that name although she spells it Gillian
Molly - that's my cat's name at my parents' house (but she's still mine, long story)
Jayne
Charlotte
Olivia
Kendall - not sure how it flows with Sarah
Aubrey - another one I hadn't considered, but I like
Audrey - I think I mentioned it before and DH doesn't like it.
Maggie - maybe as a nickname for something else, just because I'm afraid it might sound a little juvenile when she's older
Emily - my niece
Sadie
Sophie
Laura
Lauren - another cousin of ours I hadn't mentioned
Rebecca - was on our list with Sarah
Elyse
The others we could definitely think about. I bolded my favorites. Sarah's middle name is Ellen, after my mom's middle name.
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 01:54 PM Lucy
Laura/ Laurel :) / Lauren - Lauren is my cousin, but the others are nice
Clara
Claire
Julie/ Julia - Julia was something I'd considered with Sarah, still a possibility
Emma :)
Jenna - this might be an other way to name her after SIL, but it may be confusing having a Jen/Jenny and a Jenna around
Maya
Lyoshka October 3rd, 2007, 09:13 PM Oh man, I was going to say that Audrey Lynn would sound lovely... maybe you can run it by DH again if YOU like it...
how about....
Sophia Lynn
Kate Lynn (is it too close to Kaitlyn?)
Alexandra (our number one girl name still)
Jessica Lynn
Michelle
Michaelene (sp?)
Svetlana (Sveta for short)
Natasha (full-Natalia)
AmyP October 3rd, 2007, 09:50 PM Sophia Lynn - we were discussing this tonight, it's a possibility
Kate Lynn (is it too close to Kaitlyn?) - too close to Kaitlyn
Alexandra (our number one girl name still) - might be too long
Jessica Lynn - best friend's name and SIL's name (two different people)
Michelle
Michaelene (sp?) - too out there
Svetlana (Sveta for short) - not our style and no way our families would ever spell or pronounce it correctly
Natasha (full-Natalia) - no way, had a Ukrainian exchange student in high school with that name and she was a brat
Lyoshka October 3rd, 2007, 10:18 PM I love that Sophia Lynn is up for consideration! I like Sophia a lot, but DH doesn't, so maybe I can live vicariously through you :)
Clare October 4th, 2007, 04:03 AM Gabrielle/Gabriella
Amy
Ruby
Grace
Ella
Eloise
Louise
Susannah
Georgia
Lexie
Stella
Isabella
Sophie
Clare October 4th, 2007, 04:04 AM Oh, and I like Kara, but it rhymes with Sarah, so no way.
Really? They don't rhyme at all when I say them.
Bev October 4th, 2007, 08:35 AM Victoria (Vicki or Tori for nickname)
Louise
Abigail
Susanne
AmyP October 4th, 2007, 09:37 AM Gabrielle/Gabriella
Amy - that's my name silly!
Ruby
Grace
Ella
Eloise
Louise
Susannah
Georgia
Lexie
Stella
Isabella
Sophie
The rest are okay.
AmyP October 4th, 2007, 09:38 AM Victoria (Vicki or Tori for nickname)
Louise
Abigail
Susanne
None of those are really us. Thanks for trying!
Cami October 4th, 2007, 01:42 PM I totally see Rachel Lynn going along with Sarah Ellen and I think it sounds great with Powell, so if yours is close it would work.
I was going to suggest Lauren too but now I'll put a plug in for Laurel. But then I'd go with Jennifer as the middle name.
If you're thinking Aubrey (which I'd think your DH would veto if he doesn't like Audrey), we also considered Avery and to this day I'm not sure why we went with Aubrey.
Um, so nothing new from me. :scan:
AmyP October 4th, 2007, 06:50 PM Okay, discussed a few more with DH last night.
Jenna is out. There's a porn star named Jenna Jameson (or something like that) and that's all he could think of with that name. Men!
Other names he vetoed:
Kendall
Darcy
Olivia
Jayne
Sadie (I think he said no to that)
Emma
Abigail
He likes Sophia, and would be okay with Sophie as a nickname.
Elizabeth is a possibility. I like it a lot. Not sure it sounds great with Jennifer or Lynn. I may have him talk to FIL and see if he'd care if we used MIL's middle name or not. They had a nasty divorce and I don't know if using MIL's middle name would bug him or not.
I like Bethany a lot too. It sounds better with Lynn than Elizabeth. It's also not all that popular right now.
Shel October 4th, 2007, 07:01 PM Bethany was on our girl list for Owen, but it David wasn't cracked about it. Plus, it sounds funky with our last name :)
MrsPeacefrog October 4th, 2007, 07:58 PM What about Alisa I really like that name but my friends sisters name is that so I didn't use it. It would sound pretty with Lynn
Isn't Alisa and Alyssa the exact same name?
Cami October 4th, 2007, 08:02 PM Alisa is pronounced Ah-LEE-sa and Alyssa is Ah-LISS-a.
Clare October 4th, 2007, 08:04 PM Alisa is pronounced Ah-LEE-sa and Alyssa is Ah-LISS-a.
Still a bit too close to name sisters aren't they?
Clare October 4th, 2007, 08:06 PM The rest are okay.
 You can tell I was tired when I typed that last night  I was trying to think of all the sisters of Sarah's that I know and one family is Gabrielle, Rachel, Sarah and Amy so I wrote them all down not thinking
I love Bethany and Elizabeth, I think they are both lovely.
Has Caroline been suggested?
Alyssa October 4th, 2007, 10:20 PM Has Caroline been suggested?Yep, by me. :)
And how do you say Kara and Sarah so that they don't at all rhyme? Most Kara's I know are Cah-ra although I do know a few that say it Car-ah. But I'd still consider the latter to rhyme w/ Sarah?
I keep coming back to Megan. :aok:
A couple other ideas:
Kendra
Kelly
Marissa
Colleen
Brenna
Anna
Hannah
Karly October 4th, 2007, 10:47 PM I say Kara like care-uh, and Sarah the same way. :dunno:
Cami October 5th, 2007, 12:20 AM Still a bit too close to name sisters aren't they?
It took me like 5 minutes to figure out who we were naming Alyssa and Alisa. Ok, yes, I think they are too close for sisters. So Jayne shouldn't use this name. But Amy could. Oh and I thought Jayne was meaning that she had considered Alisa when naming Alyssa. Not this go around. :)
I just really wish someone would use the names Ruby, Freya, or Georgia. I love those names!
In England, Kara was pronounced "car-a" but Sarah was "sare-a" so they wouldn't rhyme so much. :dunno:
Clare October 5th, 2007, 01:03 AM In England, Kara was pronounced "car-a" but Sarah was "sare-a" so they wouldn't rhyme so much. :dunno:
Exactly. One rhymes with car and one with air. So not rhymy at all.
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 07:58 AM Yep, by me.
Kendra - another cousin I didn't mention
Kelly - another cousin I didn't mention and can't stand
Marissa
Colleen
Brenna
Anna - my niece
Hannah - too close to my niece's name
Not sure about the others, although I like Brenna a lot. Maybe because Kerrie's (sunnyflower) Brenna is so darn cute!
I also really like Megan. It was probably my second choice for Sarah. I mentioned it to DH and he was lukewarm.
Right now my mom's and my favorites are Elizabeth and Bethany. DH likes Bethany okay but says nobody will ever call her by her full name, just Beth. :dunno: Like that matters! He is Robert, and I always call him Rob. He only gets called Robert at work because the other Robert goes by Rob.
And yes, we'd pronounce Kara like care-uh. My mom suggested it last night and I reminded her it rhymes with Sarah.
And I don't like Ruby, Freya, or Georgia. Sorry.
Alyssa October 5th, 2007, 08:27 AM I've known a few Bethany's and they were just that, not Beth.
Thanks for clarifying the Kara/Sarah pronounciations!!
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 08:42 AM Come to think of it, the only Bethany I knew well was called Beth or Bethany. She didn't really have a preference. :dunno:
I'm liking Bethany better than Elizabeth because Elizabeth sounds awkward with Lynn or Jennifer. Elizabeth Ann is nice (Ann is MIL's middle name). We just have to see if it would bug FIL or not to have a grandchild with his ex-wife's middle name.
Bev October 5th, 2007, 08:52 AM Well don't tell him you named her after MIL, Ann(e) is a SUPER COMMON middle name. It just goes with almost everything.
from: Beverly Anne. :)
What sort of names are you going for? Not funky out there names, but more classic, or more like Taylor, Jordan sort of thing?
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 08:57 AM I think we like classic more so than trendy or "out there" if that helps.
Girlo October 5th, 2007, 11:32 AM How about.....
Lucy
Miranda
Terra
:)
Girlo October 5th, 2007, 11:33 AM I just realized Terra rhymes with Sarah.  Nevermind on that one......
Alyssa October 5th, 2007, 12:11 PM Kathleen
Maureen
Alice (could be called Ali)
Alexandra (also could be Ali, Ally, etc.)
Cassie
gulp! October 5th, 2007, 12:56 PM Well don't tell him you named her after MIL, Ann(e) is a SUPER COMMON middle name. It just goes with almost everything.
from: Beverly Anne. :)
 from: Stefanie Anne. :)
ETA: now that I've read back and see that Bethany is in contention, I will tell you that I am *constantly* misheard and people think my name is Bethany. I don't know if it goes the other way for Bethanys, though.
Jayne October 5th, 2007, 01:00 PM Yes..we considered Alisa for Alyssa (not sisters  ) and here we pronounce Kara and Sarah as rhyming.
I like Beth Anne! Sounds pretty and Beth and Sarah would be pretty sister names!
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 01:18 PM Lucy - DH says no
Miranda - I don't like it
Terra - rhymes with Sarah
Kathleen - my best friend is naming her baby this if it's a girl
Maureen - no, there was a somewhat crazy person on UB with that name
Alice (could be called Ali) - it's okay, but I like Alison better
Alexandra (also could be Ali, Ally, etc.) - it's okay
Cassie - maybe as a nickname for Cassandra or something, I like it okay but don't love it
If we went with Allison, I'd probably call her Ally. The funny thing is that SIL's best friend's name is Alyson Jennifer. So I know it sounds okay. I'd prefer to spell it Alyson, but DH wants to spell it Allison. I figure, like Sarah, either way we spell it she's going to have to explain it to people. But I'm not horribly particular on the spelling, so I can live with that.
And, a sidenote, DH's aunt begged both of his cousins to name a girl Sarah Beth. Only one of them had a girl, and her name is Chelsea. And his aunt was very happy that we named our daughter Sarah, even though her middle name isn't Beth. I think his aunt would be over the moon if we had a Sarah and a Beth. :) Not a reason to go for this, but kind of cool anyway.
And I like Caroline, and how it sounds with Sarah. There would be a bit of explanation on pronunciation with my family, only because I have an Aunt Caroline (who I love) who pronounces it Car-o-lynn. And I'd go with Car-o-line if we chose it. But that's no big deal. Besides, we all know how wonderful Anne's Caroline is, don't we? :)
ETA: and I like Caroline Jennifer. Or is that too many syllables?
Alyssa October 5th, 2007, 02:18 PM Do you use Sarah's middle name often? If you don't, then I wouldn't worry much about exactly how the flow is between first and middle. Just pick a first name that you love!
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 02:21 PM Whenever she's in trouble, I do. And when there is more than one Sarah in the room (like in a class she took this past summer) I use it. :)
Jessica October 5th, 2007, 02:28 PM I don't think Caroline Jennifer is too many syllables. And Caroline sounds really nice with your last name.
Marcella October 5th, 2007, 03:31 PM Just throwing out girls names that we considered but didn't use (I apologize that some of them have probably already been mentioned). :)
Audrey
Leah
Lydia
Sadie
Elizabeth (Claudia was THIS close to being Elizabeth)
Genavieve
Clara
Claire
Monica/Monika (DH pushed hard for this one)
Cecilia
But, I think this all may be moot because for some reason I'm getting boy vibes for you!
AmyP October 5th, 2007, 04:59 PM But, I think this all may be moot because for some reason I'm getting boy vibes for you!
You were right with Sarah, so we'll see.
Lyoshka October 6th, 2007, 01:15 AM He likes Sophia, and would be okay with Sophie as a nickname.
Just wanted to throw something in the mix, Amy... In Russian, the short for Sophia is Sonya. Another possibility for a nickname along with Sophie, if you like it.
I like Elizabeth with Lynn...
