View Full Version : Pregnancy Loss Testing
Silke September 25th, 2007, 04:23 PM I hadn't really announced that I was pregnant because I was scared of another miscarriage since my first one last year in June. It happened again. It totally surprised DH since I was so sick. I went in for the u/s and no hb. From what I can gather from my hcgs the baby must have developed too slowly and then simply stopped growing. I don't have problems getting pregnant. It took 2 cycles again, so according to my OB "my plumbing works," but she thinks, it's time for some testing since this was two m/c in a row.
She sent in some tissue to pathology for chromosomal testing. Next Monday I have my follow-up appointment for my d&c where she will also address testing.
I have no idea what to expect. What kind of testing is available? What should I ask? I am not going to see an RE. My insurance won't cover any infertility, and we don't want to pursue it this far anyways.
schwanda September 25th, 2007, 05:06 PM I'm sorry for your losses.
The first thing they'll want to see is if the baby had normal chromosomes. The most common reason for early m/c is an abnormal number of chromosomes in the baby.
After that they may look for clotting disorders and immune factors. I don't know exactly what the panel is because I've never had it done. Those tests will probably be covered by insurance (all blood tests) because they aren't just related to fertility.
I hope you get some answers soon!
Amanda
Alyson September 25th, 2007, 05:22 PM Silke, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I know how hard it is to have a mc and can't imagine having two. I hope you'll get some answers soon. Good luck!
Bev September 25th, 2007, 05:44 PM :hug99: They may also test for triploidy, but that may be in with the chromosone testing Amanda mentioned.
Silke September 25th, 2007, 05:56 PM I'm glad to hear that this will probably be covered. I guess, I will find out more on Monday. My OB did mentioned sth about progesterone and blood clotting but we really didn't have much time to talk before surgery. I am just hoping that I'll get an answer from pathology even if it's abnormal chromosomes.
stass September 25th, 2007, 06:29 PM :hug99: They never found a reason for my mcs < 3 between Saxon and Flynn. But I did go on progesterone just in case. I don't know if it worked but Flynn is okay. :dunno: Hope you can get answers.
MrsPeacefrog September 25th, 2007, 08:33 PM I have no answers just wanted to say I am sorry to hear that you have had another mc :hug99:
Silke September 25th, 2007, 08:48 PM Thanks everyone. We will try again. I am just scared of having a third m/c. After talking to a few friends, I found out that there are a few who had two m/c and got pregnant the 3rd time around with no problems. I just hope, my egg aren't rotten, and I just had the unlucky draw to grab two bad ones in a row.
Deb, I can't believe you only have 9 days left.
Girlo September 25th, 2007, 08:51 PM I had similar testing after my 3rd m/c in July. I'm so sorry you've had to go through all this, Silke. :hug99:
My OB just ordered a bunch of blood work since there wasn't any real "tissue" that last time (I only knew I was pg a couple of days). She tested for thyroid, clotting disorders, some DNA stuff, and a bunch of other stuff. Then, she referred me to a perinatologist (high-risk pg doc) for the results.
The results were that there's nothing at all wrong with me. That's good and bad. Good because there's nothing serious holding me back and nothing to fix. :woot: Bad because it put me right back where I started 2.5 years ago. :( The most likely reason for all my losses was my age.
The other good part is that I have Alex to prove that I can carry a baby (almost  ) to term and that baby doesn't have any genetic weirdness (that we know of yet  ).
The only thing he suggested is to start charting again to make sure that I'm still O'ing regularly, and if not, then Clomid might give my system a little estrogen boost.
I really hope you can get some answers and get another BFP soon. :hug99: I know exactly how you feel and it's no fun at all. :hug99:
Silke September 25th, 2007, 08:57 PM The most likely reason for all my losses was my age.
That's my fear. I don't feel so old at all.
I hope, this is it for you, Shannon. Maybe I join you in 4 months or so.
Silke September 25th, 2007, 08:59 PM Shannon, when did they do the blood test? My OB said I had to be not pregnant anymore, no hcg. Is it after the first AF?
ETA: :duh: I just re-read. You just had the testing done.
Shel September 25th, 2007, 09:19 PM I had to wait so many days after my next cycle after my miscarriage before my testing. It's been awhile since I had it done.
Girlo September 25th, 2007, 09:21 PM Silke - yeah, I had the blood draw back in July and got the results in August. :) Although, I was still bleeding from the m/c at the time of the draw. :dunno: Maybe they weren't testing for HCG, so it didn't matter.....I'm sure my HCG was pretty close to zero anyway.
Yeah....my age. :( I just turned 40 in July. DH just turned 51 a week ago. We're old. No two ways about it. However. I do know that women have healthy babies way into their 40's. :) I just know that I don't have years and years to just keep trying, KWIM? That's a big reason why I made a mental cut-off date (a year from now) when we'd just stop and Alex would be an only. After TTC for so long, it just gave me peace of mind. :) For us oldies, it'll just take a little longer and a lot more prayers for a perfect egg. :)
As for the waiting - wait schmait. :snob: I never listened to all that advice. Just pay attention to your own body and do what feels right. :hug99: I hope you'll be back VERY soon! :)
Clare September 25th, 2007, 09:23 PM I'm sorry to hear that you had another loss, Silke :hug99:

Becca September 26th, 2007, 10:08 AM Also just wanted to say how sorry I am for another loss. I hope that the tests provide some answers and comfort.
Ditto:justahug: Thinking of you!!
Silke September 30th, 2007, 07:03 PM Thanks everyone. I am hanging in there. I am having a hard time sleeping. My follow-up appointment is tomorrow.
I am meanwhile using this time to get healthier. I am taking my daily vitamins for a change daily :giggle:. I added fish oil, and on the recommendations of my best friend to do something for myself, I will start dance classes. It doesn't hurt to get into better shape.
Melissa September 30th, 2007, 07:07 PM Good luck tomorrow!
Silke October 3rd, 2007, 10:00 PM I had my follow-up appointment on Monday. The genetic test was already back. The baby never had a chance: two trisomies. She doesn't think, we need to do any pregnancy loss testing since I have regular periods and got pregnant easily. If there were something wrong in regards to egg quality, it would take me much longer to get pregnant, but, she said, my age does play a role. I thought, the chromosome testing would give me closure but it just tore up more wounds. I am scared of this happening again since there is nothing I can do about it.
Lyoshka October 3rd, 2007, 11:14 PM Oh Silke... ( i thought i posted here before) I'm SO sorry about all the worrying and no closure... I don't have any advice other than to do what you feel is right.. I do hope you decide to try again, I know how much you want a third one. I'm sorry this is so hard. i'm here for you... :hug99:
Girlo October 4th, 2007, 12:00 AM Don't give up, Silke!! You've got to have at least one perfect left in there. :cheer:
I'm older than you.....remember that! :awink: If this is something you want, keep going!!! :hug99:
