View Full Version : Anyone in Girls Scouts yet?

Victoria brought home the sign up sheet for the Girl Scouts today and I've been thinking about letting her join. I wasn't in them when I was a kid so I have no personal experience. The closest I've got to anything do with the GS (besides the cookies  ) is when I called on it last year and the woman I spoke to was real nasty to me so I'm hesitant to do it.
Does anyone have any - good or bad - they can share?

I had a great time in Girl Scouts, and am hoping Caroline will want to join. (there's one starting up in our neighborhood, I'm just waiting to hear back from the lady in charge) I always regretted dropping out when I did.

Here in Canada our equivilent to Girl Scouts are Girl Guides. I was in both Brownies and Guides as a child and absolutely loved it. I was just looking int it last weekend to see when Emma can start. She can start Sparks at age 5 so I am thinking of putting her in it next year.

We did boy scouts for two years and pulled out. It wasn't for us and Tylor just didn't like it.
As far as girl scouts I think we will opt out of that one. Alyssa is in so much already and I just don't have the time to commit to another thing. Not to mention the chapter that meets at our church really annoys me. They seem like they are really the lower income families around here and well..most of the kids come dirty and they just are not our crowd. Don't get me wrong. I shouldn't judge but well..I do.

I loved being in Scouts as a girl. I have so many happy memories of earning all those badges - going through the books to figure out what I could earn and figuring out how to do it. :)

We just went to the info meeting today for the scout troop that Addison will join. The first real meeting is next week. It's the "Daisies"... which I don't remember from my childhood, but I was told that K girls are Daisies, 1st and 2nd graders are Brownies, and then Junior Girl Scouts and so on. I liked it when I was in grade school. Addison thinks the daisy badges look pretty. :)

We got a flyer for Daisies and they'll be at the school event on Friday, so we'll check it out. We have a lot going on right now with soccer, swimming and Y Adventure Guides (aka Indian Princesses, but they don't use that name anymore), but if it looks good, maybe.

I was in Indian Princesses when I was little. I liked it because it was a Daddy/daughter thing. That was really special to me!
There is also a new group that is growing rapidly called American Heritage Girls. I don't know much about it and I'm not trying to say Girl Scouts is bad. I just recently saw this and thought I'd mention it here. Here's the link: http://www.christianpost.com/article/20070803/28750_Christian_Alternative_to_Secular_Girl_Scouts_Growing,_Expanding.htm
I don't know if we will do the girl scouts thing or not. I may go with the Y Guides or nothing at all. I'm sure we'll be doing lots of other things too, so who knows. I have a little while before I have to think about it.

Maggie's first Daisy meeting is on 9/20. She is very excited, and I'm excited for her.
gulp!

we don't have a chapter that's all that close to us, so I doubt Emma will be doing it.

We got a flyer from Riley's school too, but we won't be going. Our neighbor and someone David works with both had girls in Scouts and pulled them because it gets so expensive here. They tell you the upfront costs, then keep tacking on more and more fees that it's almost unaffordable for anyone anymore.

I remember being in Brownies when I was little. I always hated that I had to wear a brown dress, I wished it were pink  It was alot of fun, I have alot of good memories from it.

We just got one of the fliers too...Isabelle is interested, so we'll see if they actually have a troop near us that corresponds to her overscheduled life! I loved being a Brownie when I was little...

I was in Girl Scouts all the way to my senior year in high school. I earned the Gold Award as well. I had a fantastic time, my mom was my leader for a number of years in GS though and she loved doing fun things and was able to keep the troop active.

Ugh- I think I may have volunteered myself to be a leader....I wrote on the flyer that I was willing to be a volunteer (but not to start a troup)...and they don't have one at Isabelle's school for her age...but there has been a little interest. There's one other mom who has said she'd be willing to be an assistant leader...so if I don't agree to be a co-leader, it's probably not happening.

Sounds like it's all hinging on you, Eleanor!! :) We were told that there have to be two troop leaders if there are more than 5 girls, but I resisted the urge to volunteer.
Did y'all know that our little Daisy girls don't do the cookie sale? I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing... :)

I loved doing girl scouts when I was a kid. I especially loved wearing my uniform to school on meeting days! :loser:

I was in Girl Scouts though 4th grade when our troop disbanded. I enjoyed it and look forward to Camille being one.

When I was a kid it was called Pixies and not Daisies. I wasn't happy with my experience last year when Amber was in Daisies. The leader was pretty much non-communicative. Amber didn't even get her badge. I need to ask about that. The leader this year is different and we're going to give it another try. Amber really enjoyed it and that's the only reason I'm willing to give it another chance.

I loved girl scouts as a kid and I hope Sarah wants to join when she's old enough.

What sort of fees and requirements (uniform?) have you encountered?
TtownAnne
September 17th, 2007, 02:12 PM
So far the only fee, if we continue, is $10 a month. I haven't heard about uniforms specifically yet, although I do believe they are a lot more relaxed about it than when some of us were in GS. I seem to remember that now they only thing they require is the vest/sash thingie, and that's only when they're out in the community doing something.

Daisys only have the smock, that looks like this:
http://goshop.girlscouts.org/GSUSAOnline/Images/Primary/03100p.jpg
The one I got doesn't have the petals or anything else on it. (At least here) Daisys get the center of the flower at the first meeting, and then every other meeting, they earn a petal. Our leader is having each parent be responsible for a petal so we all get to participate.

daisies here have t-shirts and the apron...
That said we didn't join daisies since the sign up up is on the 19th and we are moving on the 25th...we will try signing up when we get to colorado.

Victoria decided she didn't want to do GS after all. :tearhair: She's signed up for karate instead. She's my tomboy all right.

Sheila, How did Maggie like the first meeting?
I did GS as a kid. I started with Brownies in 1st or 2nd grade. I stopped for a year or so and then joined again as a Junior in 4th through 6th grade and then stopped once I got to Junior High. :heee: I would defnitely let Genavieve do it if it was something she was interested in. I have a lot of memories from day camps, camping weekends, and a dude ranch that we went to when I participated!

 I was wrong about the fees! It's $10 for the year, plus an extra $10 for the smock and badges. We had our first meeting tonight and Caroline LOVED it. :cheer: They sang the GS songs, learned the pledge, did a craft and read a book.

I got guilted into being our troop's co-leader.
Question for Daisy moms: Investiture Ceremony: is your daughter's troop doing one? If so, what exactly are they doing?
I'm going to try and talk the leader out of doing a big deal thing for this and focusing on earning petals instead because we haven't done any yet. :dunno:

Our investiture is next week; I don't know if it's a huge deal or not, or exactly what they are doing, but knowing the lady who is in charge I don't think so.

I was in the Brownies and Girl Scouts and loved it. I still remember some of the songs. :giggle: Not to mention "Girl Scouts Honor".

Maggie's investiture is tomorrow. Her troop is working with a Junior troop that meets the same time in the same place. So far, everyone seems to be happy with the situation. I believe the Juniors have a skit planned.
MAggie loved her first meeting, and is really looking forward to tomorrow.
