View Full Version : Do you pack their lunch
Jayne

I have been packing a lunch every single day for Tylor since Kindergarten and this year is no excpetion with Alyssa. Both kids are picky and it is just easier to pack their lunch.
So do you pack their lunch?
How often do you pack it?
Do they buy lunch at school?
What sorts of things do you pack?
What sorts of things can they buy?

So do you pack their lunch? For now, yes. The hot lunch program starts next Monday.
How often do you pack it? Currently, everyday. When the lunch program starts, it will only be two days per week.
Do they buy lunch at school? She will, yes.
What sorts of things do you pack? PB&J, turkey, today she had raviolis and sauce, tomorrow she wants soup and crackers.
What sorts of things can they buy? Caroline's situation is a bit different in that because her school is so small (just over 100 kids in the ENTIRE student body through 8th grade!), instead of dealing with the liabilities and costs of providing lunch themselves, they contract out through various restaurants in town. Mondays they will get lunch from Chick-Fil-A (chicken nuggets or a sandwich); Tuesdays is from the Mexican restaurant (tacos or a quesadilla), Friday is Pizza Hut (one slice of pepperoni or cheese), etc. So Caroline will be having Chick-Fil-A, Subway and Pizza Hut. :)

So do you pack their lunch? Yes, unless of course dh helps on the rare occasion I can't...
How often do you pack it? every day..no other option
Do they buy lunch at school? well once a week they offer sub sandwiches or pizza slices but my child won't eat any of those :disbelief:
What sorts of things do you pack? Hmm it's either just a plain bun, or a bagel( cinnamon sugar, cut up) or hot dogs wrapped in cresent rolls she also gets a couple snacks..baggie with some crackers, cheese string, juice box, water bottle, pudding or yogurt.
What sorts of things can they buy?Nothing, there are no vending machines allowed in the school and there is no cafeteria..they do have a milk program where you can buy milk but that has to be set up/prepaid well in advance, she can't just decide she wants milk today and go ask for one.

So do you pack their lunch? yep, for all three kids.
How often do you pack it? normally every day they attend but starting this week, we're letting Addison do a hot lunch once a week. It's $2.80 for lunch so she's not doing that every day!
What sorts of things do you pack? a sandwich (ham and cheese or PB), 2 fruits (some combo of apples, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, blackberries, watermelon, or pineapple), yogurt, something crunchy (graham crackers, saltines, dry cereal), and Aubrey gets carrots and cucumber. If we have dinner leftovers that will work, I pack those.
What sorts of things can they buy? They repeat the same things every week for a month at a time. This month~
M: chicken, mashed potatoes, pears, milk
T: lasagna, bread, green beans, milk
W: pizza... not sure what else
Th: ?
F: hamburger, fries, watermelon, milk
I wish schools did really nice healthy lunches. I know some do... but until that happens here, I'd rather just pack for them.
I like that we can decide day to day whether she's doing packed or hot lunch. At school last year, we had to decide in a month at a time.

I am hoping to get some good idea's from all of you. Alyssa is much better at eating then Tylor. She is picky but better! At school they have to be able to open everything and deal with their own lunch. Meaning I can't send Yogurt because she can't get it open. Basically I put everything in baggies right now.
They also don't heat anything up so I can't send a hot dog or noodles or anything because she won't eat it cold :dunno:
Hot lunch line at our school is so long that those poor kids don't get much time to eat once they get their lunch. She hasn't asked at all to buy and so I am avoiding it. Not to mention it isn't usually something she would eat. Our Lunch is 2.00$ Milk is .35

So do you pack their lunch? Yes
How often do you pack it? Most of the time
Do they buy lunch at school? Eliot once a week for sure. Ian only when there is something in the menu that he really likes (chicken nuggets or taquitos are his favorites) so maybe once or twice a month.
What sorts of things do you pack? Some kind of sandwich (ham/turkey/bologna & cheese, pb&j), some kind of crackers/pretzel/chips, cheese sticks, apple sauce, drinkable yogurt, raisins, jell-o, and some kind of fruit. Eliot gets a juice box and a bottle of water and Ian gets milk.
What sorts of things can they buy? There is a big variety throughout the month on both schools... hamburgers, chicken nuggets, soup & salad, bake potatoes, salisbury steaks, hotdogs, pizza, lasagna, taquitos, burritos... to name a few. All meals always include a main dish, a starch, a fruit & a drink (usually milk).

Buy the drinkable yogurts in the "tubs?" not the tubes. Danimals makes them. They have tabs on the sides and are easier to open than regular yogurt.

At Ian's school they won't heat anything up and at Eliot's they do have a couple of microwaves but the kids have to be old enough to use them by themselves and Eliot is not ready yet so until then the only time they'll get a warm lunch it will be if they buy... I guess that's why I let Eliot choose one or 2 times a week, I figure it's nice for him to get a warm lunch at least once a week.
gulp!
September 10th, 2007, 05:15 PM
Jayne, we pack drinkable yogurts and both of my kids (5 and 3.5) can punch a straw through the foil top. They don't have to try and pry it off, plus they can't really spill much. (ETA: Shel is right on- Danimals is what we buy.)
So do you pack their lunch? yes, at the moment. Emma has indicated an interest in buying the hot lunch, so on days when it's something she'd eat, I'm happy to let her do it. It's only $1.80.
How often do you pack it? Emma is every day (except when she'll choose to buy lunch), and Krishan is just on the two days a week he goes to preschool.
What sorts of things do you pack? for snack, it's usually a fruit, some cheese or a veggie, and some crackers. For lunch, they usually get a sandwich (deli meat, PB&J or Sunflower butter & jelly if it's a peanut-free area), a yogurt, and either goldfish, veggie or pirate booty, or similar. My kids won't eat much more than that, and often that's too much food for them.
What sorts of things can they buy? There is a menu that comes out each month, and it's your standard hot lunch fare. Today was a meatball sub, then I've seen chicken sandwich, and other typical fare. Friday is always pizza day. And, every day there is an alternate lunch- PB&J or fruit/yogurt/granola. And I think they have several fruit and veggie choices as well. They can also just buy milk- regular, skim or chocolate, for $0.25. I haven't told Emma about that yet...
They can also buy breakfast at our school. $0.60. Most of the time it is either muffins or cereal.

Paige brings hotdogs wrapped in Crescent rolls and she eats them cold( just like Lunchables( do you get thos in the US?) I just put a soft icepack in her back( much lighter) and it keeps everything, even the yogurt cool.

They sure are  That's the only kind of yogurt I send b/c both of my kids can open a little bit and stick a straw in there to drink it without making a big mess (especially Ian).

We also bought small Thermos bottles so that we can send them with hot stuff like soup and mac & cheese. I've seen them at Target.

I will have to try the drinkables. She has never had them so I don't know if she would like it or not. I will pick up some at my grocery run tonight.
yes Lisa, we have lunchables. She would love it if I packed that everyday but those are expensive.

Janelle's school is not offering lunch for pm kindergarten, so she eats before leaving...they have a snack at 2:30, it can only be fruit or veggies (and it has to be 100% whole fresh fruit, no juice or popscicles or anything else even if it is made completely of fruit.) the teacher provided it the first week and now we have a calendar of who has what day. Today was Janelle's day because of yeasterday being her birthday (no birthday treats allowed...just snack), we brought "pirate fruit" in her words...I made fruit kabobs on those mini plastic pirate sword tooth pick things, and sent in pirate themed paper cups and a huge jug of water.
Kincaid's school's lunch program doesn't start up till next monday...once it starts he will buy lunch everyday cause they actually have healthy food and he gets feeding therapy and it works better when the whole group is eating the same things. But last week/this week I've sent him in bowls of cottage cheese, pretzels, fruit bars, soy butter and jelly sandwiches, shredded cheddar, crackers, cubed tofu...

Your not kidding..this is where I got the idea that if she could eat those disgusting cold hotdogs then she might eat them wrapped in crescent rolls and she loves them better than the lunchables itself..I gave her the option of having the crescentrolled dogs or Lunchables for her first day(treat) and she chose the crescent dogs :aok:
I wonder if we have anything like the yogurt you guys are talking about..can someone post a picture 'cause I'm going to pick up a few things at the grocery store tonight for P's lunch..

Jayne, can Alyssa open up small plastic containers like the Tupperware cups that hold about 6 ounces for yogurt or applesauce or other things like that? I'm not sure if those big mouth Thermos containers for hot food would be hard for her to open.

So do you pack their lunch? yes
How often do you pack it? Tuesday - Friday
Do they buy lunch at school? on Mondays only
What sorts of things do you pack? Harry is fussy, he has the same thing every day and won't eat anything different. For recess he has a tub of pureed apple and some crackers, lunch is a peanut butter sandwich and some cookies for snack. Emily has fruit for recess (normally chopped up apple and strawberries with more variety in summer), either a vegemite sandwich or soup and bread for lunch with either crackers/cookies/fruit bar for snack.
What sorts of things can they buy? We've been promised a new improved healthy canteen menu for a couple of years but we are yet to see it  Harry orders either a sausage roll or hot dog and Emily gets either pizza, meat pie, sausage roll, spaghetti bolognaise or macaroni cheese.

I never thought about them having to open their own food! Kincaid eats in his classroom so the teachers/aids/therapist are all there to help...1 teacher, 2 aides, and 1 therapist every day, and there are only 8 kids.
Hmm maybe those new seal and lock containers? You have to release the air then it opens pretty easily, she might even find it fun!

So do you pack their lunch? Yep
How often do you pack it? Every day so far (2 weeks)
Do they buy lunch at school? I told Aidan he could buy once a week, but we've yet to do it.
What sorts of things do you pack? We've got to be entirely peanut free so that has a lot of impact. And he needs 2 snacks so I add extra food but let him figure out what is for when. So far, I'm doing a bologna/salami sandwich on a bagel or WW bread. I did tell Aidan we'd try soup and noodles soon, and we got a thermos for this purposes. Every day I've put in pretzel rods and 2 fruits (apples, natural applesauce, cantelope, grapes). And then I mix up yogurt, cheese sticks, granola bara, crackers, popcorn, etc. And 1 juicebox then he brings a water bottle to keep at his desk.
What sorts of things can they buy? There is a set lunch each day but it's just one choice. And then milk. Nothing in between.
Note: I also have to make Seamus lunch 3x week right now. He's not peanut free but he's also in an anti-lunch mode so I'm trying as much different things as I can and hoping. So he's getting a lot of what Aidan is, except I did already try noodles with him, and PB&J. Colin takes lunch occasionally and soon will take it 4x week.

I don't remember having a snack time in elementary school. :dunno: If someone ate "snacky" foods, it was because they snuck them early/late from their lunch.
I won't buy Danimals because of the HFCS. :snob: I might as a rare occurance if they were on an amazing sale, but not as a regular thing. Stonyfield Farms makes smoothies too......I'd probably just buy those when they go on sale.
gulp!
September 10th, 2007, 09:03 PM
man, I didn't even think about HFCS. :duh: Rats. Convenience might have to win out on that one, though. I really like that they can just poke their straw through the foil. We also buy Stonyfield Farms yogurt tubes, and those seem fairly easy to open.
Alyssa, what peanut-free granola bars do you buy? I've really only found Kashi pumpkin flax bars, which are YUMMY, but I'd like to have another kind or two to mix it up.

As near as I can figure, HFCS is listed on the ingredients list in Canada as Glucose-Fructose.

Do they buy lunch at school? I told Aidan he could buy 2x/mo. He's taking it Weds for the first time.
What sorts of things do you pack? Every day, I pack a protein, carb, veggie, and fruit and either milk or water in his thermos. Today he had some homemade pasta salad w/ a ton of veggies in it, 2 pieces of deli turkey rolled up, a small applesauce & some raisins. He's taken turkey on a bagel, PB&J, or a wrap made w/ that Flat-Out stuff. I usually give him cukes & tomatoes, and grapes, berries, melon, apple, applesauce, etc. Sometimes a yogurt. If I need it to stay cold, I put a small ice pack in the lunch box.
What sorts of things can they buy? The lunch menu has 3 choices every day, one which is always vegetarian. For instance, last week one day it was ravioli w/ sauce OR chicken caesar salad OR bagel w/ cream cheese. Then there is a choice of vegetable, choice of fruit, and white milk. Aidan claims there is dessert, as well :dunno:

Anyway, I might be completely wrong. I've emailed the Canadian Sugar Institute about it, so I'll let you know what they say. :)

So do you pack their lunch? Yup!
How often do you pack it? Jackson does "Lunch Bunch" once a week at school - when the weather gets colder he'll probably do it more often, but for now once a week.
Do they buy lunch at school? No
What sorts of things do you pack? His school last year was peanut free, so I got used to doing those kinds of meals, so I just automatically did that now. Since he only does it once a week, it is ok if I pack the same thing. So, he gets 2 WW mini bagels w/cream cheese, baby carrots, fruit (cantaloupe, blueberries, apple sauce, grapes, watermelon), gold fish crackers, a bottle of water, and either a string cheese, a yogurt, or ham roll ups (depending on what I have).
What sorts of things can they buy? Nothing

I've really only found Kashi pumpkin flax bars, which are YUMMY, but I'd like to have another kind or two to mix it up.Shiiiiiit....I forgot about that. There aren't actually peanut allergies in his class, it's just recommended for the whole school. I know one girl put up a stink and is bring pb&j...so I might let these slide. (The room next to Aidan's is strictly peanut-free, they have antibiotic wipes when you go in there, etc. So I don't think there is a gigantic risk. :shuffle: )

Yep! They help sometimes if we do it the night before.
How often do you pack it?
Whenever they aren't buying at school.
Do they buy lunch at school?
Yes, if they like what is on the menu.
What sorts of things do you pack?
Sandwiches, crackers or chips, yogurt, string cheese, carrots, leftovers that work, jello, and a treat of some kind
What sorts of things can they buy?
We have a menu for the month, each day is different.
Some of the things are chicken nuggets, chicken sandwich, corn dogs, hamburgers, hot dogs, spaghetti, ham and cheese sandwich, Walking tacos, Toasted cheese and soup, mac and cheese, etc. Usually once a month they did East of Chicago pizza but the new principal may change that, its not on this months schedule.

I don't know what I would do if my kids schools were peanut free, they would eat pb&j everyday if I let them so it would be really hard to have to tell them they couldn't have it for lunch the whole week
Ian won't eat many veggies at school unless is lettuce with a little dipping sauce or steamed green beans with a tiny little bit of lemon juice. Eliot will eat pretty much any veggie I put in there except green peppers or tomatoes which he doesn't eat at home.

Janelle loves veggies, I would never get Kincaid to eat a veggie without force feeding the first 3 or 4 bites (for some reason once he gets 3 or 4 bites of something he will then decide hey, I like this, and eat it about 75% of the time :dunno: ), so no veggies in his lunch.

Emma was a PB&J junkie before preschool, so I was worried about it too. We picked up some sunflower butter http://www.sunbutter.com/images/bot_natural.gif and she gave it a try. Even though her kindy is not peanut-free, she still asks for an "SBJ" instead.

So do you pack their lunch? Yes.
How often do you pack it? So far, every day except Wednesday which is their early dismissal day and also Pizza day, so after school, everyone eats pizza bought from a pizzeria as a fund raiser.
Do they buy lunch at school? Not yet, but tomorrow, she says she wants to try b/c one of the choices is a bean and cheese burrito. We'll see how it goes. They are supposed to enter a pin number on a key pad when buying lunch, so I am not sure if she'll be up to the task this early.
What sorts of things do you pack? Caroline is an extremely picky eater... I have been packing a yogurt for snack with some dry cereal or crackers or a granola bar, and for her lunch, I've packed peanut butter every day along with a fruit leather or crackers or granola bar. I am searching for a fruit or veggie she will eat for lunch, but even the few things she used to like she isn't liking lately.
What sorts of things can they buy? They have a lot of choices, 3 a day, one is always a vegetarian choice, plus a salad bar with lots of fruits and veggies and milk, chocolate or regular, all included, all for $1.50. I've prepaid $30 for her already, which could last a LONG time. And, as mentioned above, every Wednesday is pizza Wednesday.

So do you pack their lunch? Yep, every single day. Jack is very picky and I know he wouldn't touch the food at school. He barely eats the lunch I pack for him.
How often do you pack it? Every day!
What sorts of things do you pack? Pb & J (though lately he doesn't want the J  ), Grilled cheese, or chicken nuggets, a fruit (banana or granny smith apple), & a juice box. Sometimes I'll put in yogurt, but I find he won't eat the rest of his lunch, just the yogurt.
What sorts of things can they buy? I really don't know. I do know that on Fridays they have pizza and I may start letting Jack buy his lunch on Fridays because he wants the pizza.
ETA: I forgot about snack. I give Jack pretzels, goldfish, plain popcorn or dry cereal & a drink. Today he got Apple Jacks (I know, I know), because he says Gabriel brings in Cookie Crisp cereal. Oh well, at least they're whole grain & fortified. :dunno: I also don't remember ever having snack in elementary school. Just lunch.

I packed David's lunch while he was in preschool because he didn't like a lot of the food they offered. Since he has been going to kindergarten I have requested that he buys his lunch. I want him to try the food and so far he's not complained about anything. They have an assortment of different things to pick from. 3 entrees veggies, fruit, etc so he pretty much has something that he likes every day.

So do you pack their lunch?
Yes, I pack Alex's. Dylan likes to pack her own, but I do pack her's at times.
How often do you pack it?
At least 3 days a week.
Do they buy lunch at school?
Yes, but we have agreed to no more than two days a week for both of them.
What sorts of things do you pack?
I try to mix it up. Sandwiches are usually the staple, but I've done wraps as well. Fruit, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, chips, granola bars and always a treat like a couple cookies, a snack size candy bar, etc. I include a juice box or water pack.
What sorts of things can they buy?
Alex can buy things like spaghetti, pizza, corn dogs, sandwiches, grilled cheese and soup, chicken strips, salads, fruit, pudding, etc. He also gets a choice of milk; regular, chocolate, strawberry and now that it's football season, they can choose orange Bronco milk.
Dylan's choices aren't great, that's why I want to pack a lunch. Pizza Hut, Subway or a hot entree from the school. She never chooses the school menu, she says it's gross. I don't want her to eat pizza and Subway all the time so I try to make something she will like and that won't 'embarrass' her (only with pre-teen girls :hehe: ).

What sorts of things do you pack? So far I've either done a wrap or sandwich with cheese and/or ham/pepperoni. Today I sent her with leftover ravioli that I heated up and put in a thermos. Fruits I'll vary with apples, pears, grapes, raspberries, raisons. Vegetables vary with cucumber, carrots, red pepper slices. Drink is either milk or water. For a "treat" I'll give her one of either two cookies (reminds me, I was going to make some homemade cc this week), cc thinsations, yogi-thingies (round yogurt balls), yogurt, applesauce, string cheese, jello.
I put a small ice pack in the lunch bag to keep things cool as well.
What sorts of things can they buy? Nothing that I'm aware of.
